For that I used “sudo apt-get\ninstall git-all”. During the installation a lot of very important\npackages got removed! It was horrible, and I couldn’t use my gnome\ndesktop environment at all! A lot off dependencies got lost!\nFortunately, I could save my system through read out the information\nabout removed packages from the apt history.\n\nToday I totally removed git and tried to install everything again with\nthe same instruction. The same misbehavior did happen! \n\nFor more information I added the history as an attachment to this\nemail. \n\nInformation about my system:\n\nKernel : Linux 4.19.0-14-amd64 The same misbehavior did happen!\n\nThis is best reported to Debian because it's a packaging problem, but\nI'll tell you what's happening.\n\nBy default, Debian installs recommends. When you specified git-all, you\nalso asked to install git-daemon-run or git-daemon-sysvinit, and the\nformer is the preferred option. So that causes systemd to be\nuninstalled and sysvinit to replace it instead, and because GNOME on\nDebian is configured to require systemd and not to work with sysvinit,\nGNOME gets removed.\n\nThere are a couple problems here.\n\nFirst, you don't want to install git-all as a package because it has\nthis behavior, and git-all should not be configured such that installing\nit causes your init system to be changed. That is a serious packaging\nproblem.\n\nSecond, GNOME should gracefully work with whatever init system is on the\nsystem, so that users can pick the one that's right for them. Non-Linux\nsystems don't even have systemd, so GNOME should be appropriately\npackaged so it doesn't have this problem.\n\nNone of this has anything to do with Git the project, which provides\nsource tarballs only and relies on distributors to build binary\npackages. All of these are Debian packaging problems and should be\nreported in a series of bugs to Debian (usually via reportbug).\n\nIn the meantime, you should install the git and git-man packages if you\nwant to use core Git, and optionally git-email, git-svn, or git-cvs if\nyou want various other parts. You don't really want to run git-daemon\noutside of a controlled environment because the Git protocol provides no\nauthentication or encryption and you shouldn't expose such services\npublicly.\n-- \nbrian m. carlson (he/him or they/them)\nHouston, Texas, US\n"},{"id":"419105","messageId":"00a701d71917$6d624d20$4826e760$@nexbridge.com","threadId":"55315","inReplyTo":"8aa7be071abc23371397f72b725babc4e4e90190.camel@avr-fun.de","subject":"RE: Git install crashed nearly whole System","fromName":"Randall S. I think fundamentally this is a packaging issue. It looks like\n\"git-daemon-*\" has been downgraded to \"Suggests\" in Debian unstable. It\nlooks like this was done in 1:2.26.0-2 last April. From the changelog:\n\n * debian/control: downgrade Recommends by git-all on git-daemon-run\n to Suggests. The git-all package is a \"batteries included\" full\n installation of Git. Automatically running a daemon is not useful\n to most of its users.\n\nSo they are already aware of and addressed the problem, but older\nreleases will still show it.\n\n-Peff\n"},{"id":"419642","messageId":"YFOMylgx9paP5anv@camp.crustytoothpaste.net","threadId":"55315","inReplyTo":"YFOHFABji5/sDZod@coredump.intra.peff.net","subject":"Re: Git install crashed nearly whole System","fromName":"brian m. carlson","fromEmail":"sandals@crustytoothpaste.net","sentAt":"2021-03-18T17:24:26Z","receivedAt":"2021-03-18T17:26:05Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"sandals@crustytoothpaste.net","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/497054?v=4"},"body":"On 2021-03-18 at 17:00:04, Jeff King wrote:\n> On Thu, Mar 18, 2021 at 04:33:52PM +0000, brian m. carlson wrote:\n> > If everything's working for you, there's no need to change it. So in bullseye, this will probably be\nfixed even if the daemon does get installed.\n\nI think the person who previously maintained both Git and runit in\nDebian was busy with other things for a while, which prevented this\nissue from being fixed.
