There are so many modes in which it\ncan be called, for example.\n\nBut for the `patch` command in `git add -i`, only one mode is relevant:\nthe `stage` mode. And we just implemented the beginnings of that mode in\nC so far. So let's use it when `add.interactive.useBuiltin=true`.\n\nNow, while the code in `add-patch.c` is far from reaching feature parity\nwith the code in `git-add--interactive.perl` (color is not implemented,\nthe diff algorithm cannot be configured, the colored diff cannot be\npost-processed via `interactive.diffFilter`, many commands are\nunimplemented yet, etc), hooking it all up with the part of `git add -i`\nthat is already converted to C makes it easier to test and develop it.\n\nNote: at this stage, both the `add.interactive.useBuiltin` config\nsetting is still safely opt-in, and will probably be fore quite some\ntime, to allow for thorough testing \"in the wild\" without adversely\naffecting existing users.\n\nSigned-off-by: Johannes Schindelin <johannes.schindelin@gmx.de>\n---\n add-interactive.c | 9 ++++++---\n 1 file changed, 6 insertions(+), 3 deletions(-)\n\ndiff --git a/add-interactive.c b/add-interactive.c\nindex f395d54c08..034c1dc02f 100644\n--- a/add-interactive.c\n+++ b/add-interactive.c\n@@ -917,15 +917,18 @@ static int run_patch(struct add_i_state *s, const struct pathspec *ps,\n \tcount = list_and_choose(s, files, opts);\n \tif (count >= 0) {\n \t\tstruct argv_array args = ARGV_ARRAY_INIT;\n+\t\tstruct pathspec ps_selected = { 0 };\n \n-\t\targv_array_pushl(&args, \"git\", \"add--interactive\", \"--patch\",\n-\t\t\t\t \"--\", NULL);\n \t\tfor (i = 0; i < files->items.nr; i++)\n \t\t\tif (files->selected[i])\n \t\t\t\targv_array_push(&args,\n \t\t\t\t\t\tfiles->items.items[i].string);\n-\t\tres = run_command_v_opt(args.argv, 0);\n+\t\tparse_pathspec(&ps_selected,\n+\t\t\t       PATHSPEC_ALL_MAGIC & ~PATHSPEC_LITERAL,\n+\t\t\t       PATHSPEC_LITERAL_PATH, \"\", args.argv);\n+\t\tres = run_add_p(s->r, &ps_selected);\n \t\targv_array_clear(&args);\n+\t\tclear_pathspec(&ps_selected);\n \t}\n \n \treturn res;\n-- \ngitgitgadget\n\n"},{"id":"388084","messageId":"63b571f351beb95828fb754bc94dac36347e1083.1576224486.git.gitgitgadget@gmail.com","threadId":"52445","inReplyTo":"pull.173.git.1576224486.gitgitgadget@gmail.com","subject":"[PATCH 01/19] built-in add -i: start implementing the `patch` functionality in C","fromName":"Johannes Schindelin via GitGitGadget","fromEmail":"gitgitgadget@gmail.com","sentAt":"2019-12-13T08:07:48Z","receivedAt":"2019-12-13T08:08:15Z","isPatch":true,"sender":{"key":"johannes.schindelin@gmx.de","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/127790?v=4"},"body":"From: Johannes Schindelin <johannes.schindelin@gmx.de>\n\nIn the previous steps, we re-implemented the main loop of `git add -i`\nin C, and most of the commands.\n\nNotably, we left out the actual functionality of `patch`, as the\nrelevant code makes up more than half of `git-add--interactive.perl`,\nand is actually pretty independent of the rest of the commands.\n\nWith this commit, we start to tackle that `patch` part. For better\nseparation of concerns, we keep the code in a separate file,\n`add-patch.c`. The new code is still guarded behind the\n`add.interactive.useBuiltin` config setting, and for the moment,\nit can only be called via `git add -p`.\n\nThe actual functionality follows the original implementation of\n5cde71d64aff (git-add --interactive, 2006-12-10), but not too closely\n(for example, we use string offsets rather than copying strings around,\nand after seeing whether the `k` and `j` commands are applicable, in the\nC version we remember which previous/next hunk was undecided, and use it\nrather than looking again when the user asked to jump).\n\nAs a further deviation from that commit, We also use a comma instead of\na slash to separate the available commands in the prompt, as the current\nversion of the Perl script does this, and we also add a line about the\nquestion mark (\"print help\") to the help text.\n\nWhile it is tempting to use this conversion of `git add -p` as an excuse\nto work on `apply_all_patches()` so that it does _not_ want to read a\nfile from `stdin` or from a file, but accepts, say, an `strbuf` instead,\nwe will refrain from this particular rabbit hole at this stage.\n\nSigned-off-by: Johannes Schindelin <johannes.schindelin@gmx.de>\n---\n Makefile          |   1 +\n add-interactive.h |   1 +\n add-patch.c       | 265 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++\n builtin/add.c     |  15 ++-\n 4 files changed, 277 insertions(+), 5 deletions(-)\n create mode 100644 add-patch.c\n\ndiff --git a/Makefile b/Makefile\nindex 6c4a1e0ee5..0345d7408b 100644\n--- a/Makefile\n+++ b/Makefile\n@@ -824,6 +824,7 @@ LIB_H := $(sort $(patsubst ./%,%,$(shell git ls-files '*.h' ':!t/' ':!Documentat\n \n LIB_OBJS += abspath.o\n LIB_OBJS += add-interactive.o\n+LIB_OBJS += add-patch.o\n LIB_OBJS += advice.o\n LIB_OBJS += alias.o\n LIB_OBJS += alloc.o\ndiff --git a/add-interactive.h b/add-interactive.h\nindex 7043b8741d..0e3d93acc9 100644\n--- a/add-interactive.h\n+++ b/add-interactive.h\n@@ -4,5 +4,6 @@\n struct repository;\n struct pathspec;\n int run_add_i(struct repository *r, const struct pathspec *ps);\n+int run_add_p(struct repository *r, const struct pathspec *ps);\n \n #endif\ndiff --git a/add-patch.c b/add-patch.c\nnew file mode 100644\nindex 0000000000..d1b1a080e4\n--- /dev/null\n+++ b/add-patch.c\n@@ -0,0 +1,265 @@\n+#include \"cache.h\"\n+#include \"add-interactive.h\"\n+#include \"strbuf.h\"\n+#include \"run-command.h\"\n+#include \"argv-array.h\"\n+#include \"pathspec.h\"\n+\n+struct hunk {\n+\tsize_t start, end;\n+\tenum { UNDECIDED_HUNK = 0, SKIP_HUNK, USE_HUNK } use;\n+};\n+\n+struct add_p_state {\n+\tstruct repository *r;\n+\tstruct strbuf answer, buf;\n+\n+\t/* parsed diff */\n+\tstruct strbuf plain;\n+\tstruct hunk head;\n+\tstruct hunk *hunk;\n+\tsize_t hunk_nr, hunk_alloc;\n+};\n+\n+static void setup_child_process(struct add_p_state *s,\n+\t\t\t\tstruct child_process *cp, ...)\n+{\n+\tva_list ap;\n+\tconst char *arg;\n+\n+\tva_start(ap, cp);\n+\twhile ((arg = va_arg(ap, const char *)))\n+\t\targv_array_push(&cp->args, arg);\n+\tva_end(ap);\n+\n+\tcp->git_cmd = 1;\n+\targv_array_pushf(&cp->env_array,\n+\t\t\t INDEX_ENVIRONMENT \"=%s\", s->r->index_file);\n+}\n+\n+static int parse_diff(struct add_p_state *s, const struct pathspec *ps)\n+{\n+\tstruct strbuf *plain = &s->plain;\n+\tstruct child_process cp = CHILD_PROCESS_INIT;\n+\tchar *p, *pend;\n+\tsize_t i;\n+\tstruct hunk *hunk = NULL;\n+\tint res;\n+\n+\t/* Use `--no-color` explicitly, just in case `diff.color = always`. */\n+\tsetup_child_process(s, &cp,\n+\t\t\t \"diff-files\", \"-p\", \"--no-color\", \"--\", NULL);\n+\tfor (i = 0; i < ps->nr; i++)\n+\t\targv_array_push(&cp.args, ps->items[i].original);\n+\n+\tres = capture_command(&cp, plain, 0);\n+\tif (res)\n+\t\treturn error(_(\"could not parse diff\"));\n+\tif (!plain->len)\n+\t\treturn 0;\n+\tstrbuf_complete_line(plain);\n+\n+\t/* parse hunks */\n+\tp = plain->buf;\n+\tpend = p + plain->len;\n+\twhile (p != pend) {\n+\t\tchar *eol = memchr(p, '\\n', pend - p);\n+\t\tif (!eol)\n+\t\t\teol = pend;\n+\n+\t\tif (starts_with(p, \"diff \")) {\n+\t\t\tif (p != plain->buf)\n+\t\t\t\tBUG(\"multi-file diff not yet handled\");\n+\t\t\thunk = &s->head;\n+\t\t} else if (p == plain->buf)\n+\t\t\tBUG(\"diff starts with unexpected line:\\n\"\n+\t\t\t    \"%.*s\\n\", (int)(eol - p), p);\n+\t\telse if (starts_with(p, \"@@ \")) {\n+\t\t\ts->hunk_nr++;\n+\t\t\tALLOC_GROW(s->hunk, s->hunk_nr,\n+\t\t\t\t   s->hunk_alloc);\n+\t\t\thunk = s->hunk + s->hunk_nr - 1;\n+\t\t\tmemset(hunk, 0, sizeof(*hunk));\n+\n+\t\t\thunk->start = p - plain->buf;\n+\t\t}\n+\n+\t\tp = eol == pend ? Therefore,\nwe have to do a loop in which we let the user edit the hunk, then test\nwhether the result would work, and if not, drop the edits and let the\nuser decide whether to try editing the hunk again.\n\nNote: in contrast to the Perl version, we use the same diff\n\"coalescing\" (i.e. merging overlapping hunks into a single one) also for\nthe check after editing, and we introduce a new flag for that purpose\nthat asks the `reassemble_patch()` function to pretend that all hunks\nwere selected for use.\n\nThis allows us to continue to run `git apply` *without* the\n`--allow-overlap` option (unlike the Perl version), and it also fixes\ntwo known breakages in `t3701-add-interactive.sh` (which we cannot mark\nas resolved so far because the Perl script version is still the default\nand continues to have those breakages).\n\nSigned-off-by: Johannes Schindelin <johannes.schindelin@gmx.de>\n---\n add-interactive.c |   6 +\n add-interactive.h |   3 +\n add-patch.c       | 333 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++---\n 3 files changed, 325 insertions(+), 17 deletions(-)\n\ndiff --git a/add-interactive.c b/add-interactive.c\nindex 29356c5aa2..6a5048c83e 100644\n--- a/add-interactive.c\n+++ b/add-interactive.c\n@@ -46,6 +46,12 @@ void init_add_i_state(struct add_i_state *s, struct repository *r)\n \tinit_color(r, s, \"reset\", s->reset_color, GIT_COLOR_RESET);\n \tinit_color(r, s, \"fraginfo\", s->fraginfo_color,\n \t\t   diff_get_color(s->use_color, DIFF_FRAGINFO));\n+\tinit_color(r, s, \"context\", s->context_color,\n+\t\tdiff_get_color(s->use_color, DIFF_CONTEXT));\n+\tinit_color(r, s, \"old\", s->file_old_color,\n+\t\tdiff_get_color(s->use_color, DIFF_FILE_OLD));\n+\tinit_color(r, s, \"new\", s->file_new_color,\n+\t\tdiff_get_color(s->use_color, DIFF_FILE_NEW));\n }\n \n /*\ndiff --git a/add-interactive.h b/add-interactive.h\nindex 584f304a9a..062dc3646c 100644\n--- a/add-interactive.h\n+++ b/add-interactive.h\n@@ -12,6 +12,9 @@ struct add_i_state {\n \tchar error_color[COLOR_MAXLEN];\n \tchar reset_color[COLOR_MAXLEN];\n \tchar fraginfo_color[COLOR_MAXLEN];\n+\tchar context_color[COLOR_MAXLEN];\n+\tchar file_old_color[COLOR_MAXLEN];\n+\tchar file_new_color[COLOR_MAXLEN];\n };\n \n void init_add_i_state(struct add_i_state *s, struct repository *r);\ndiff --git a/add-patch.c b/add-patch.c\nindex c8d84aec68..ea863ca09d 100644\n--- a/add-patch.c\n+++ b/add-patch.c\n@@ -29,6 +29,7 @@ struct hunk_header {\n \n struct hunk {\n \tsize_t start, end, colored_start, colored_end, splittable_into;\n+\tssize_t delta;\n \tenum { UNDECIDED_HUNK = 0, SKIP_HUNK, USE_HUNK } use;\n \tstruct hunk_header header;\n };\n@@ -435,14 +436,14 @@ static void render_diff_header(struct add_p_state *s,\n \n /* Coalesce hunks again that were split */\n static int merge_hunks(struct add_p_state *s, struct file_diff *file_diff,\n-\t\t       size_t *hunk_index, struct hunk *merged)\n+\t\t       size_t *hunk_index, int use_all, struct hunk *merged)\n {\n-\tsize_t i = *hunk_index;\n+\tsize_t i = *hunk_index, delta;\n \tstruct hunk *hunk = file_diff->hunk + i;\n \t/* `header` corresponds to the merged hunk */\n \tstruct hunk_header *header = &merged->header, *next;\n \n-\tif (hunk->use != USE_HUNK)\n+\tif (!use_all && hunk->use != USE_HUNK)\n \t\treturn 0;\n \n \t*merged = *hunk;\n@@ -459,20 +460,99 @@ static int merge_hunks(struct add_p_state *s, struct file_diff *file_diff,\n \t\t * - In C we instead count the number of resulting hunks (without\nactually doing the work of splitting, but just counting the transitions\nfrom non-context lines to context lines), and store that information\nwith the hunk, and we do that *while* parsing the diff in the first\nplace.\n\nAnother deviation: the built-in `git add -p` was designed with a single\nstrbuf holding the diff (and another one holding the colored diff, if\nthat one was asked for) in mind, and hunks essentially store just the\nstart and end offsets pointing into that strbuf. As a consequence, when\nwe split hunks, we now use a special mode where the hunk header is\ngenerated dynamically, and only the rest of the hunk is stored using\nsuch start/end offsets. This way, we also avoid the frequent\nformatting/re-parsing of the hunk header of the Perl version.\n\nSigned-off-by: Johannes Schindelin <johannes.schindelin@gmx.de>\n---\n add-patch.c                | 215 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++-\n t/t3701-add-interactive.sh |  12 +++\n 2 files changed, 225 insertions(+), 2 deletions(-)\n\ndiff --git a/add-patch.c b/add-patch.c\nindex 171025b08d..2d34ddd7f4 100644\n--- a/add-patch.c\n+++ b/add-patch.c\n@@ -28,7 +28,7 @@ struct hunk_header {\n };\n \n struct hunk {\n-\tsize_t start, end, colored_start, colored_end;\n+\tsize_t start, end, colored_start, colored_end, splittable_into;\n \tenum { UNDECIDED_HUNK = 0, SKIP_HUNK, USE_HUNK } use;\n \tstruct hunk_header header;\n };\n@@ -155,7 +155,7 @@ static int parse_diff(struct add_p_state *s, const struct pathspec *ps)\n \tstruct argv_array args = ARGV_ARRAY_INIT;\n \tstruct strbuf *plain = &s->plain, *colored = NULL;\n \tstruct child_process cp = CHILD_PROCESS_INIT;\n-\tchar *p, *pend, *colored_p = NULL, *colored_pend = NULL;\n+\tchar *p, *pend, *colored_p = NULL, *colored_pend = NULL, marker = '\\0';\n \tsize_t file_diff_alloc = 0, i, color_arg_index;\n \tstruct file_diff *file_diff = NULL;\n \tstruct hunk *hunk = NULL;\n@@ -217,6 +217,7 @@ static int parse_diff(struct add_p_state *s, const struct pathspec *ps)\n \t\t\thunk->start = p - plain->buf;\n \t\t\tif (colored_p)\n \t\t\t\thunk->colored_start = colored_p - colored->buf;\n+\t\t\tmarker = '\\0';\n \t\t} else if (p == plain->buf)\n \t\t\tBUG(\"diff starts with unexpected line:\\n\"\n \t\t\t    \"%.*s\\n\", (int)(eol - p), p);\n@@ -225,6 +226,13 @@ static int parse_diff(struct add_p_state *s, const struct pathspec *ps)\n \t\telse if (starts_with(p, \"@@ \") ||\n \t\t\t (hunk == &file_diff->head &&\n \t\t\t  skip_prefix(p, \"deleted file\", &deleted))) {\n+\t\t\tif (marker == '-' || marker == '+')\n+\t\t\t\t/*\n+\t\t\t\t * Should not happen; previous hunk did not end\n+\t\t\t\t * in a context line? Preparing for hunk splitting already at this\nstage avoids an indentation change of the entire hunk header-printing\nblock later, and is almost as easy to review as without that handling.\n\nSigned-off-by: Johannes Schindelin <johannes.schindelin@gmx.de>\n---\n add-interactive.c |  14 +----\n add-interactive.h |  15 +++++\n add-patch.c       | 145 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++----\n 3 files changed, 151 insertions(+), 23 deletions(-)\n\ndiff --git a/add-interactive.c b/add-interactive.c\nindex 034c1dc02f..29356c5aa2 100644\n--- a/add-interactive.c\n+++ b/add-interactive.c\n@@ -10,16 +10,6 @@\n #include \"dir.h\"\n #include \"run-command.h\"\n \n-struct add_i_state {\n-\tstruct repository *r;\n-\tint use_color;\n-\tchar header_color[COLOR_MAXLEN];\n-\tchar help_color[COLOR_MAXLEN];\n-\tchar prompt_color[COLOR_MAXLEN];\n-\tchar error_color[COLOR_MAXLEN];\n-\tchar reset_color[COLOR_MAXLEN];\n-};\n-\n static void init_color(struct repository *r, struct add_i_state *s,\n \t\t       const char *slot_name, char *dst,\n \t\t       const char *default_color)\n@@ -36,7 +26,7 @@ static void init_color(struct repository *r, struct add_i_state *s,\n \tfree(key);\n }\n \n-static void init_add_i_state(struct add_i_state *s, struct repository *r)\n+void init_add_i_state(struct add_i_state *s, struct repository *r)\n {\n \tconst char *value;\n \n@@ -54,6 +44,8 @@ static void init_add_i_state(struct add_i_state *s, struct repository *r)\n \tinit_color(r, s, \"prompt\", s->prompt_color, GIT_COLOR_BOLD_BLUE);\n \tinit_color(r, s, \"error\", s->error_color, GIT_COLOR_BOLD_RED);\n \tinit_color(r, s, \"reset\", s->reset_color, GIT_COLOR_RESET);\n+\tinit_color(r, s, \"fraginfo\", s->fraginfo_color,\n+\t\t   diff_get_color(s->use_color, DIFF_FRAGINFO));\n }\n \n /*\ndiff --git a/add-interactive.h b/add-interactive.h\nindex 0e3d93acc9..584f304a9a 100644\n--- a/add-interactive.h\n+++ b/add-interactive.h\n@@ -1,6 +1,21 @@\n #ifndef ADD_INTERACTIVE_H\n #define ADD_INTERACTIVE_H\n \n+#include \"color.h\"\n+\n+struct add_i_state {\n+\tstruct repository *r;\n+\tint use_color;\n+\tchar header_color[COLOR_MAXLEN];\n+\tchar help_color[COLOR_MAXLEN];\n+\tchar prompt_color[COLOR_MAXLEN];\n+\tchar error_color[COLOR_MAXLEN];\n+\tchar reset_color[COLOR_MAXLEN];\n+\tchar fraginfo_color[COLOR_MAXLEN];\n+};\n+\n+void init_add_i_state(struct add_i_state *s, struct repository *r);\n+\n struct repository;\n struct pathspec;\n int run_add_i(struct repository *r, const struct pathspec *ps);\ndiff --git a/add-patch.c b/add-patch.c\nindex 79eefa9505..e266a96ca7 100644\n--- a/add-patch.c\n+++ b/add-patch.c\n@@ -5,14 +5,26 @@\n #include \"argv-array.h\"\n #include \"pathspec.h\"\n #include \"color.h\"\n+#include \"diff.h\"\n+\n+struct hunk_header {\n+\tunsigned long old_offset, old_count, new_offset, new_count;\n+\t/*\n+\t * Start/end offsets to the extra text after the second `@@` in the\n+\t * hunk header, e.g. the function signature.
