Sorry.\n\n> That is, if there were some way to distinguish tracked and untracked\n> paths in --no-index mode, --dir-diff would copy only the tracked parts\n> to temporary directories and run tree comparison. Since there is no\n> \"untracked paths\" by definition in --no-index mode, we do not even\n> have to make copies but just compare the two directories given using\n> the same tree comparison tool.\n\nAs far as `--no-index` is concerned, all files are untracked anyway. There\nis no index, so there are no staged/committed/tracked files.\n\n> Wouldn't that be more useful behaviour than telling the end users to\n> run the backend tree comparison tool themselves?\n\nI am lost. What behavior are you talking about? I *think* you mean to say\nthat the `--dir-diff` mode under `--no-index` should essentially do what\n`--no-dir-diff` does? I think that's not the way I want to go. The\n`--dir-diff` mode only makes sense when there is a mix of\ntracked/untracked files, which simply is not the case for `--no-index`.\nAnd we should not make it \"fall back\" to its opposite. The user asked for\n`--dir-diff` and it just does not make sense.\n\nIn any case, the patch series I'd like to see advanced to `master` is not\nabout supporting or not supporting `--dir-diff` with `--no-index`, but\nabout preventing a segmentation fault when a user calls the (non-sense)\ncombination of `--no-index` and `--dir-diff`.\n\nCiao,\nDscho\n"},{"id":"375613","messageId":"xmqqsgtg5cff.fsf@gitster-ct.c.googlers.com","threadId":"51080","inReplyTo":"nycvar.QRO.7.76.6.1905151015540.44@tvgsbejvaqbjf.bet","subject":"Re: js/difftool-no-index, was Re: What's cooking in git.git (May 2019, #02; Tue, 14)","fromName":"Junio C Hamano","fromEmail":"gitster@pobox.com","sentAt":"2019-05-15T08:50:28Z","receivedAt":"2019-05-15T08:50:40Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"gitster@pobox.com","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/54884?v=4"},"body":"Johannes Schindelin <Johannes.Schindelin@gmx.de> writes:\n\n> As far as `--no-index` is concerned, all files are untracked anyway. There\n> is no index, so there are no staged/committed/tracked files.\n> ...\n\nAh, I see I completely misspoke; sorry, there should be no \"pretend\nas if there were no --dir-diff\".\n\nIn the normal usage, \"difftool --dir-diff\" materializes the two\ntree-shaped things (I am using an invented term loosely here---it\nmay be a tree-ish, or what is in the index, or the working tree\nfiles) in two temporary directories and runs a tool to compare two\ndirectories, and what is copied out of the working tree is limited\nto the tracked ones (for the obvious purpose to avoid showing them\nthe the directory comparison tool).\n\nExtending that semantics literally to \"--no-index\" use would result\nin nonsense. As you say, there is no \"tracked\" thing under the\nmode, so doing what \"--dir-diff\" literally does (i.e. only copy out\nwhat is tracked for the purpose of comparison) would be to compare\nnothing against nothing. That is not useful.\n\nWhat I was wondering when I wrote the message you are responding to\nwas complete opposite. I was imagining what would happen if we\ntreat _everything_ in the two directories being compared by\n\"difftool --dir-diff --no-index\" as if it is tracked. We do not\neven have to make copies (as we are not doing a selective \"only the\ntracked ones\" copy), but if it is easier to implement we could make\nredundant copies. In either case, the two directories given to the\n\"difftool --no-index\" would be compared with the same directory\ncomparison tool the end user is used to (as that is the one the\n\"--dir-diff\" mode uses to compare without \"--no-index\"). When the\nend user does this sequence, for example:\n\n $ rm -fr /var/tmp/1 /var/tmp/2 && mkdir /var/tmp/1 /var/tmp/2\n $ (cd /var/tmp/1 && tar xvf -) <version1.tar\n $ (cd /var/tmp/2 && tar xvf -) <version2.tar\n $ git difftool --dir-diff --no-index /var/tmp/1 /var/tmp/2\n\nisn't that what the user wanted to do?\n\nObviously \"git difftool --dir-diff --no-index\" can be replaced with\nthe underlying comparison tool that \"difftool--helper\" would have\nchosen by the end user, so it is not the end of the world if we do\nnot to support the combination and error it out instead, like your\npatch does. But I just thought it would be nicer to the end users\nwho extracted two tarballs into a pair of pristine directories and\nwanted to compare them in a way familiar to them.\n"},{"id":"375807","messageId":"nycvar.QRO.7.76.6.1905172025450.46@tvgsbejvaqbjf.bet","threadId":"51080","inReplyTo":"xmqqsgtg5cff.fsf@gitster-ct.c.googlers.com","subject":"Re: js/difftool-no-index, was Re: What's cooking in git.git (May 2019, #02; Tue, 14)","fromName":"Johannes Schindelin","fromEmail":"johannes.schindelin@gmx.de","sentAt":"2019-05-17T18:27:30Z","receivedAt":"2019-05-17T18:27:27Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"johannes.schindelin@gmx.de","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/127790?v=4"},"body":"Hi Junio,\n\nOn Wed, 15 May 2019, Junio C Hamano wrote:\n\n> Johannes Schindelin <Johannes.Schindelin@gmx.de> writes:\n>\n> I was imagining what would happen if we treat _everything_ in the two\n> directories being compared by \"difftool --dir-diff --no-index\" as if it\n> is tracked.\n\nIsn't this exactly what `git difftool --no-index` *without* `--dir-diff`\ndoes already (although without copying or hardlinking or symlinking any\nfiles)?\n\nCiao,\nDscho\n"},{"id":"375868","messageId":"xmqqsgtb1am1.fsf@gitster-ct.c.googlers.com","threadId":"51080","inReplyTo":"nycvar.QRO.7.76.6.1905172025450.46@tvgsbejvaqbjf.bet","subject":"Re: js/difftool-no-index, was Re: What's cooking in git.git (May 2019, #02; Tue, 14)","fromName":"Junio C Hamano","fromEmail":"gitster@pobox.com","sentAt":"2019-05-19T01:44:38Z","receivedAt":"2019-05-19T01:44:46Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"gitster@pobox.com","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/54884?v=4"},"body":"Johannes Schindelin <Johannes.Schindelin@gmx.de> writes:\n\n> Hi Junio,\n>\n> On Wed, 15 May 2019, Junio C Hamano wrote:\n>\n>> Johannes Schindelin <Johannes.Schindelin@gmx.de> writes:\n>>\n>> I was imagining what would happen if we treat _everything_ in the two\n>> directories being compared by \"difftool --dir-diff --no-index\" as if it\n>> is tracked.\n>\n> Isn't this exactly what `git difftool --no-index` *without* `--dir-diff`\n> does already (although without copying or hardlinking or symlinking any\n> files)?\n\nIf that is the case, then I would imagine that running that command\nfor the user, instead of refusing to work, would give a more\npleasant end-user experience. No?\n\nThe elephant in the room is that a user might think that --dir-diff makes\ncopies (as promised) and lets their difftool clobber them files happily,\nonly to find out that they clobbered the original files. And since they\nasked for `--no-index`, chances are that those files really are not\ntracked, so now they do not even have a way to revert that clobbering.\n\nSeriously, I'd rather not DWIM `--no-index --dir-diff` to essentially do\n`--no-index --no-dir-diff`.\n\nCiao,\nDscho\n\n> Unless we anticipate that we might dwim incorrectly and mistake a\n> request to compare two things, to which the distinction between\n> tracked and untracked matters, as a request to compare two\n> directories that are not under Git control, that is.
