I guess\nwe'll need some sort of horrible hack in the git-sdk-64-minimal thing, to\nallow for patching this on the CI side, without adding commits to all of\nthose branches. :-(\n\nSo: I made up my mind, and that MSYS2 runtime v3.x patch does not need to\nbe fast-tracked; it would not fix all the CI builds...\n\nCiao,\nDscho\n"},{"id":"371190","messageId":"20190311202441.GB18263@sigill.intra.peff.net","threadId":"50587","inReplyTo":"nycvar.QRO.7.76.6.1903081718330.41@tvgsbejvaqbjf.bet","subject":"Re: [PATCH 0/1] Drop last MakeMaker reference","fromName":"Jeff King","fromEmail":"peff@peff.net","sentAt":"2019-03-11T20:24:41Z","receivedAt":"2019-03-11T20:24:44Z","isPatch":true,"sender":{"key":"peff@peff.net","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/45925?v=4"},"body":"On Fri, Mar 08, 2019 at 05:27:36PM +0100, Johannes Schindelin wrote:\n\n> > Or perhaps GGG can learn to avoid 0/1 for a single-patch topic ;-)\n> \n> It is easier, and more consistent, to have a cover letter even then, for\n> things like the broader explanation of the context, the changes since the\n> previous iteration, and the range-diff (which would make v2, v3, v4, etc\n> utterly unreadable from my point of view if they were integrated into the\n> single patches, as I used to do with interdiffs).\n\nJust my two cents:\n\nAs a reviewer, I generally prefer not to see a separate cover letter for\na single patch. At least for the first version (I agree it gets unwieldy\nshowing a range-diff after the \"---\" for subsequent versions, unless it\nhappens to be pretty short).\n\nMy reasoning is that I've noticed that many of the GGG-sent patches\noften end up duplicating quite a bit of content between the cover letter\nand the commit message of the patch (or worse, putting things only in\nthe cover letter that really could go into the commit message). That\ndoubles the time I spend reading and understanding the patch's rationale\n(and I'm speaking subjectively here, of course; I didn't measure it).\n\nI don't think it's an _inherent_ problem with a separate cover letter.\nBut something about the workflow causes people to write up over-long\ncover letters. Which presumably is the fact that they're presented with\na PR textbox to write the rationale separately from when they wrote the\ncommit message. So they err on the side of repeating themselves, and\nnever see the two pieces \"together\" (like the reader will), which makes\nthe redundancy more obvious.\n\nI'd say 99% of the time a single-patch doesn't need any cover letter\nmaterial at all. And even a multi-patch series really just needs a tl;dr\nof the problem and a sketch of the solution. In both cases, the commit\nmessages should carry the meat.\n\n(That's all specific to our project, of course; I know many projects\ndon't care about commit messages at all and expect PR descriptions to be\nthe first-class explanations).\n\n-Peff\n"}]}
