Peff and I worked on this\ntogether off-list, and we are both happy with the semantics, and believe\nthat it covers most reasonable cases.\n\nThe notable case that it does _not_ cover is matching the following\nline:\n\n  a ... b\n\nwith the following expression\n\n  git grep --column -e b --or -e a\n\nThis will produce the column for 'b' rather than the column for 'a',\nsince we short-circuit an --or when the left child finds a match, in\nthis case 'b'. So, we break the semantics for this case, at the benefit\nof not having to do twice the work.\n\nIn the future, I'd like to revisit this, since any performance gains\nthat we _do_ make in this area are moot when we rescan all lines in\nshow_line() with --color. A path forward, I imagine, would look like a\nlist of regmatch_t's, or a set of locations in the expression tree, such\nthat we could either enumerate the list or walk the tree in order to\ncolorize the line. But, I think for now that is #leftoverbits.\n\nThanks especially to the last round of reviewers for their detailed\nfeedback, and I hope that starting in a new series will be OK. I figure\nthat enough has changed that I'd rather not clutter an already busy\nthread.\n\n\nThanks,\nTaylor\n\nTaylor Blau (7):\n  Documentation/config.txt: camel-case lineNumber for consistency\n  grep.c: expose {,inverted} match column in match_line()\n  grep.[ch]: extend grep_opt to allow showing matched column\n  grep.c: display column number of first match\n  builtin/grep.c: add '--column' option to 'git-grep(1)'\n  grep.c: add configuration variables to show matched option\n  contrib/git-jump/git-jump: jump to exact location\n\n Documentation/config.txt   |  7 ++-\n Documentation/git-grep.txt |  9 +++-\n builtin/grep.c             |  1 +\n contrib/git-jump/README    | 12 ++++-\n contrib/git-jump/git-jump  |  2 +-\n grep.c                     | 95 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++---------\n grep.h                     |  2 +\n t/t7810-grep.sh            | 63 +++++++++++++++++++++++++\n 8 files changed, 163 insertions(+), 28 deletions(-)\n\n--\n2.17.0.582.gccdcbd54c\n"},{"id":"350438","messageId":"0e2a7e38aa7f23a784e3dc81296f73803b9ec329.1529365072.git.me@ttaylorr.com","threadId":"48734","inReplyTo":"cover.1529365072.git.me@ttaylorr.com","subject":"[PATCH 1/7] Documentation/config.txt: camel-case lineNumber for consistency","fromName":"Taylor Blau","fromEmail":"me@ttaylorr.com","sentAt":"2018-06-18T23:43:05Z","receivedAt":"2018-06-18T23:43:14Z","isPatch":true,"sender":{"key":"me@ttaylorr.com","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/301000140?v=4"},"body":"lineNumber has casing that is inconsistent with surrounding options,\nlike color.grep.matchContext, and color.grep.matchSelected. Fill the first\nwith the offset of the match produced by the given expression. If\nextended, fill the later with the offset of the match produced as if\n--invert were given.\n\nFor instance, matching \"--not -e x\" on this line produces a columnar\noffset of 0, (i.e., the whole line does not contain an x), but \"--invert\n--not -e -x\" will fill the later ssize_t of the column containing an\n\"x\", because this expression is semantically equivalent to \"-e x\".\n\nTo determine the column for the inverted and non-inverted case, do the\nfollowing:\n\n  - If matching an atom, the non-inverted column is as given from\n    match_one_pattern(), and the inverted column is unset.\n\n  - If matching a --not, the inverted column and non-inverted column swap.\n\n  - If matching an --and, or --or, the non-inverted column is the\n    minimum of the two children, with the exception that --or is\n    short-circuiting. For instance, if we match \"-e a --or -e b\" on a\n    line that contains both \"a\" and \"b\" (and \"b\" comes first), the match\n    column will hold \"a\", since we inspected the left child first, and\n    short-circuited over the right child.\n\nThis patch will become useful when we later pick between the two new\nresults in order to display the column number of the first match on a\nline with --column.\n\nCo-authored-by: Jeff King <peff@peff.net>\nSigned-off-by: Taylor Blau <me@ttaylorr.com>\n---\n grep.c | 56 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++------------------\n 1 file changed, 38 We're talking about short-circuiting OR, so by\ndefinition we stop the short-circuit because we matched the first half\nof the OR.\n\nIf you stop short-circuiting AND, then yes, you incur a penalty for\nevery line. Fill the first\nwith the offset of the match produced by the given expression. If\nextended, fill the later with the offset of the match produced as if\n--invert were given.\n\nFor instance, matching \"--not -e x\" on this line produces a columnar\noffset of 0, (i.e., the whole line does not contain an x), but \"--invert\n--not -e -x\" will fill the later ssize_t of the column containing an\n\"x\", because this expression is semantically equivalent to \"-e x\".\n\nTo determine the column for the inverted and non-inverted case, do the\nfollowing:\n\n  - If matching an atom, the non-inverted column is as given from\n    match_one_pattern(), and the inverted column is unset.\n\n  - If matching a --not, the inverted column and non-inverted column\n    swap.\n\n  - If matching an --and, or --or, the non-inverted column is the\n    minimum of the two children, with the exception that --or is\n    short-circuiting. For instance, if we match \"-e a --or -e b\" on a\n    line that contains both \"a\" and \"b\" (and \"b\" comes first), the match\n    column will hold \"a\", since we inspected the left child first, and\n    short-circuited over the right child.\n\nThis patch will become useful when we later pick between the two new\nresults in order to display the column number of the first match on a\nline with --column.\n\nCo-authored-by: Jeff King <peff@peff.net>\nSigned-off-by: Taylor Blau <me@ttaylorr.com>\n---\n grep.c | 58 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++-------------------\n 1 file changed, 39 insertions(+), 19 deletions(-)\n\ndiff --git a/grep.c b/grep.c\nindex 45ec7e636c..dedfe17f93 100644\n--- a/grep.c\n+++ b/grep.c\n@@ -1248,11 +1248,11 @@ static int match_one_pattern(struct grep_pat *p, char *bol, char *eol,\n \treturn hit;\n }\n \n-static int match_expr_eval(struct grep_expr *x, char *bol, char *eol,\n-\t\t\t   enum grep_context ctx, int collect_hits)\n+static int match_expr_eval(struct grep_opt *opt, struct grep_expr *x, char *bol,\n+\t\t\t   char *eol, enum grep_context ctx, ssize_t *col,\n+\t\t\t   ssize_t *icol, int collect_hits)\n {\n \tint h = 0;\n-\tregmatch_t match;\n \n \tif (!x)\n \t\tdie(\"Not a valid grep expression\");\n@@ -1261,25 +1261,39 @@ static int match_expr_eval(struct grep_expr *x, char *bol, char *eol,\n \t\th = 1;\n \t\tbreak;\n \tcase GREP_NODE_ATOM:\n-\t\th = match_one_pattern(x->u.atom, bol, eol, ctx, &match, 0);\n+\t\t{\n+\t\t\tregmatch_t tmp;\n+\t\t\th = match_one_pattern(x->u.atom, bol, eol, ctx,\n+\t\t\t\t\t      &tmp, 0);\n+\t\t\tif (h && (*col < 0 || tmp.rm_so < *col))\n+\t\t\t\t*col = tmp.rm_so;\n+\t\t}\n \t\tbreak;\n \tcase GREP_NODE_NOT:\n-\t\th = !match_expr_eval(x->u.unary, bol, eol, ctx, 0);\n+\t\t/*\n+\t\t * Upon visiting a GREP_NODE_NOT, col and icol become swapped.\n+\t\t */\n+\t\th = !match_expr_eval(opt, x->u.unary, bol, eol, ctx, icol, col,\n+\t\t\t\t     0);\n \t\tbreak;\n \tcase GREP_NODE_AND:\n-\t\tif (!match_expr_eval(x->u.binary.left, bol, eol, ctx, 0))\n+\t\tif (!match_expr_eval(opt, x->u.binary.left, bol, eol, ctx, col,\n+\t\t\t\t     icol, 0))\n \t\t\treturn 0;\n-\t\th = match_expr_eval(x->u.binary.right, bol, eol, ctx, 0);\n+\t\th = match_expr_eval(opt, x->u.binary.right, bol, eol, ctx, col,\n+\t\t\t\t    icol, 0);\n \t\tbreak;\n \tcase GREP_NODE_OR:\n \t\tif (!collect_hits)\n-\t\t\treturn (match_expr_eval(x->u.binary.left,\n-\t\t\t\t\t\tbol, eol, ctx, 0) ||\n-\t\t\t\tmatch_expr_eval(x->u.binary.right,\n-\t\t\t\t\t\tbol, eol, ctx, 0));\n-\t\th = match_expr_eval(x->u.binary.left, bol, eol, ctx, 0);\n+\t\t\treturn (match_expr_eval(opt, x->u.binary.left, bol, eol,\n+\t\t\t\t\t\tctx, col, icol, 0) ||\n+\t\t\t\tmatch_expr_eval(opt, x->u.binary.right, bol,\n+\t\t\t\t\t\teol, ctx, col, icol, 0));\n+\t\th = match_expr_eval(opt, x->u.binary.left, bol, eol, ctx, col,\n+\t\t\t\t    icol, 0);\n \t\tx->u.binary.left->hit |= h;\n-\t\th |= match_expr_eval(x->u.binary.right, bol, eol, ctx, 1);\n+\t\th |= match_expr_eval(opt, x->u.binary.right, bol, eol, ctx, col,\n+\t\t\t\t     icol, 1);\n \t\tbreak;\n \tdefault:\n \t\tdie(\"Unexpected node type (internal error) %d\", x->node);\n@@ -1290,25 +1304,30 @@ static int match_expr_eval(struct grep_expr *x, char *bol, char *eol,\n }\n \n static int match_expr(struct grep_opt *opt, char *bol, char *eol,\n-\t\t      enum grep_context ctx, int collect_hits)\n+\t\t      enum grep_context ctx, ssize_t *col,\n+\t\t      ssize_t *icol, int collect_hits)\n {\n \tstruct grep_expr *x = opt->pattern_expression;\n-\treturn match_expr_eval(x, bol, eol, ctx, collect_hits);\n+\treturn match_expr_eval(opt, x, bol, eol, ctx, col, icol, collect_hits);\n }\n \n static int match_line(struct grep_opt *opt, char *bol, char *eol,\n+\t\t      ssize_t *col, ssize_t *icol,\n \t\t      enum grep_context ctx, int collect_hits)\n {\n \tstruct grep_pat *p;\n-\tregmatch_t match;\n \n \tif (opt->extended)\n-\t\treturn match_expr(opt, bol, eol, ctx, collect_hits);\n+\t\treturn match_expr(opt, bol, eol, ctx, col, icol,\n+\t\t\t\t  collect_hits);\n \n \t/* we do not call with collect_hits without being extended */\n \tfor (p = opt->pattern_list; Fill the first\nwith the offset of the match produced by the given expression. If\nextended, fill the later with the offset of the match produced as if\n--invert were given.\n\nFor instance, matching \"--not -e x\" on this line produces a columnar\noffset of 0, (i.e., the whole line does not contain an x), but \"--invert\n--not -e -x\" will fill the later ssize_t of the column containing an\n\"x\", because this expression is semantically equivalent to \"-e x\".\n\nTo determine the column for the inverted and non-inverted case, do the\nfollowing:\n\n  - If matching an atom, the non-inverted column is as given from\n    match_one_pattern(), and the inverted column is unset.\n\n  - If matching a --not, the inverted column and non-inverted column\n    swap.\n\n  - If matching an --and, or --or, the non-inverted column is the\n    minimum of the two children.\n\nPresently, the existing short-circuiting logic for AND and OR applies as\nbefore. This will change in the following commit when we add options to\nconfigure the --column flag. Taken together, this and the forthcoming\nchange will always yield the earlier column on a given line.\n\nThis patch will become useful when we later pick between the two new\nresults in order to display the column number of the first match on a\nline with --column.\n\nCo-authored-by: Jeff King <peff@peff.net>\nSigned-off-by: Taylor Blau <me@ttaylorr.com>\n---\n grep.c | 58 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++-------------------\n 1 file changed, 39 insertions(+), 19 deletions(-)\n\ndiff --git a/grep.c b/grep.c\nindex 45ec7e636c..dedfe17f93 100644\n--- a/grep.c\n+++ b/grep.c\n@@ -1248,11 +1248,11 @@ static int match_one_pattern(struct grep_pat *p, char *bol, char *eol,\n \treturn hit;\n }\n \n-static int match_expr_eval(struct grep_expr *x, char *bol, char *eol,\n-\t\t\t   enum grep_context ctx, int collect_hits)\n+static int match_expr_eval(struct grep_opt *opt, struct grep_expr *x, char *bol,\n+\t\t\t   char *eol, enum grep_context ctx, ssize_t *col,\n+\t\t\t   ssize_t *icol, int collect_hits)\n {\n \tint h = 0;\n-\tregmatch_t match;\n \n \tif (!x)\n \t\tdie(\"Not a valid grep expression\");\n@@ -1261,25 +1261,39 @@ static int match_expr_eval(struct grep_expr *x, char *bol, char *eol,\n \t\th = 1;\n \t\tbreak;\n \tcase GREP_NODE_ATOM:\n-\t\th = match_one_pattern(x->u.atom, bol, eol, ctx, &match, 0);\n+\t\t{\n+\t\t\tregmatch_t tmp;\n+\t\t\th = match_one_pattern(x->u.atom, bol, eol, ctx,\n+\t\t\t\t\t      &tmp, 0);\n+\t\t\tif (h && (*col < 0 || tmp.rm_so < *col))\n+\t\t\t\t*col = tmp.rm_so;\n+\t\t}\n \t\tbreak;\n \tcase GREP_NODE_NOT:\n-\t\th = !match_expr_eval(x->u.unary, bol, eol, ctx, 0);\n+\t\t/*\n+\t\t * Upon visiting a GREP_NODE_NOT, col and icol become swapped.\n+\t\t */\n+\t\th = !match_expr_eval(opt, x->u.unary, bol, eol, ctx, icol, col,\n+\t\t\t\t     0);\n \t\tbreak;\n \tcase GREP_NODE_AND:\n-\t\tif (!match_expr_eval(x->u.binary.left, bol, eol, ctx, 0))\n+\t\tif (!match_expr_eval(opt, x->u.binary.left, bol, eol, ctx, col,\n+\t\t\t\t     icol, 0))\n \t\t\treturn 0;\n-\t\th = match_expr_eval(x->u.binary.right, bol, eol, ctx, 0);\n+\t\th = match_expr_eval(opt, x->u.binary.right, bol, eol, ctx, col,\n+\t\t\t\t    icol, 0);\n \t\tbreak;\n \tcase GREP_NODE_OR:\n \t\tif (!collect_hits)\n-\t\t\treturn (match_expr_eval(x->u.binary.left,\n-\t\t\t\t\t\tbol, eol, ctx, 0) ||\n-\t\t\t\tmatch_expr_eval(x->u.binary.right,\n-\t\t\t\t\t\tbol, eol, ctx, 0));\n-\t\th = match_expr_eval(x->u.binary.left, bol, eol, ctx, 0);\n+\t\t\treturn (match_expr_eval(opt, x->u.binary.left, bol, eol,\n+\t\t\t\t\t\tctx, col, icol, 0) ||\n+\t\t\t\tmatch_expr_eval(opt, x->u.binary.right, bol,\n+\t\t\t\t\t\teol, ctx, col, icol, 0));\n+\t\th = match_expr_eval(opt, x->u.binary.left, bol, eol, ctx, col,\n+\t\t\t\t    icol, 0);\n \t\tx->u.binary.left->hit |= h;\n-\t\th |= match_expr_eval(x->u.binary.right, bol, eol, ctx, 1);\n+\t\th |= match_expr_eval(opt, x->u.binary.right, bol, eol, ctx, col,\n+\t\t\t\t     icol, 1);\n \t\tbreak;\n \tdefault:\n \t\tdie(\"Unexpected node type (internal error) %d\", x->node);\n@@ -1290,25 +1304,30 @@ static int match_expr_eval(struct grep_expr *x, char *bol, char *eol,\n }\n \n static int match_expr(struct grep_opt *opt, char *bol, char *eol,\n-\t\t      enum grep_context ctx, int collect_hits)\n+\t\t      enum grep_context ctx, ssize_t *col,\n+\t\t      ssize_t *icol, int collect_hits)\n {\n \tstruct grep_expr *x = opt->pattern_expression;\n-\treturn match_expr_eval(x, bol, eol, ctx, collect_hits);\n+\treturn match_expr_eval(opt, x, bol, eol, ctx, col, icol, collect_hits);\n }\n \n static int match_line(struct grep_opt *opt, char *bol, char *eol,\n+\t\t      ssize_t *col, ssize_t *icol,\n \t\t      enum grep_context ctx, int collect_hits)\n {\n \tstruct grep_pat *p;\n-\tregmatch_t match;\n \n \tif (opt->extended)\n-\t\treturn match_expr(opt, bol, eol, ctx, collect_hits);\n+\t\treturn match_expr(opt, bol, eol, ctx, col, icol,\n+\t\t\t\t  collect_hits);\n \n \t/* we do not call with collect_hits without being extended */\n \tfor (p = opt->pattern_list;
