That's of\ncourse very general, and can touch multiple unrelated areas of git\n(worktree 'status' performance, all things protocol, storing big\nobjects, graph traversal, etc.).\n\nNo doubt others will propose other topics we'd want to carve out into\ntheir own discussions (e.g. I'm expecting the v2 protocol to be one such\ntopic), but it'll be nice to have something that brings everyone\nup-to-date on what the status is for purposes of coordination &\ncollaboration.\n\n2)\n\nI doubt many are interested in these as topics during the contributor\nsummit (but will propose them on the board if others care), but I have a\ncouple of things that touch quite a lot of things that I'm going to get\naround to working on (or have in some WIP state):\n\n - PCRE-ification & PCRE convert:\n\n a) Use the interface recently added to PCRE to use it also for basic &\n extended POSIX regexps. This speeds things up a lot\n\n b) See if we can use PCRE (or at least extended regexp) consistently in\n the rest of git via single interface. Relevant code:\n\n git grep '\\b(regcomp|regexec)\\b' -- '*.[ch]'\n\n c) Maybe if we like a) && b) enough for performance reasons we'd be\n happy to make PCRE a hard dependency, and would then ship with a\n compat/pcre2 (~80k lines) instead of the current ancient (and hard\n to update) compat/regex/* (~10k lines).\n\n - Adding the ability to optionally read a .gitconfig shipped with the\n repo, see\n https://public-inbox.org/git/87zi6eakkt.fsf@evledraar.gmail.com/\n"},{"id":"341028","messageId":"20180305170127.GA72475@google.com","threadId":"47969","inReplyTo":"20180303103957.GA24498@sigill.intra.peff.net","subject":"Re: Contributor Summit planning","fromName":"Brandon Williams","fromEmail":"bmwill@google.com","sentAt":"2018-03-05T17:01:27Z","receivedAt":"2018-03-05T17:01:36Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"bwilliams.eng@gmail.com","avatar":null},"body":"On 03/03, Jeff King wrote:\n> On Sat, Mar 03, 2018 at 05:30:10AM -0500, Jeff King wrote:\n> \n> > As in past years, I plan to run it like an unconference. Add corresponding config variables for GIT_TRACE_* so you could\n config them in /etc/gitconfig (or elsewhere). Similar to\n e.g. user.name & GIT_AUTHOR_NAME\n\n 2. Add some new trace like e.g. GIT_TRACE_COMMANDS, make it take a\n format string in GIT_TRACE_COMMANDS_FORMAT (or usually via\n config). Thus setting GIT_TRACE_COMMANDS to a file would e.g. spew\n your current repo path, subcommand, or even the absolute command\n line to the file.\n\n 3. Have some cronjob or other monitoring thingy pick up the file &\n submit to central logging.\n\nOf course you could overdo the format specifiers in #2 and e.g. send the\nfull commands along, but it seems to me that it would be sufficient for\nprivacy concerns to document that caveat with some examples.\n\nAfter all, for this use-case we're talking about us somehow guarding\nagainst a sysadmin who can just install a /etc/profile.d/git_wrapper\nanyway that'll log everything you do with git, or even provide a custom\ngit binary, so it's always going to be left to their best judgement.\n"},{"id":"341076","messageId":"874llunoxv.fsf@evledraar.gmail.com","threadId":"47969","inReplyTo":"20180303103010.GA21068@sigill.intra.peff.net","subject":"Ad-hoc pre contributor summit dinner & drinks on the 6th","fromName":"Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason","fromEmail":"avarab@gmail.com","sentAt":"2018-03-05T22:21:48Z","receivedAt":"2018-03-05T22:21:55Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"avarab@gmail.com","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/45301?v=4"},"body":"\nOn Sat, Mar 03 2018, Jeff King jotted:\n\n> The rest of this email is all logistics for attendees, so if you're not\n> coming, you can stop reading. :)\n\nI'll be arriving in BCN around 17:00 tomorrow.
