But it also\nsurrounds these with a switch on the first character of the\ncommand, which lets us jump to the right block of\nstarts_with() without going linearly through the list.\n\nHowever, each case arm of the switch falls through to the\none below it. This is pointless (we know that a command\nstarting with 'b' does not need to check any of the commands\nin the 'c' block), and it makes gcc's -Wimplicit-fallthrough\ncomplain.\n\nWe could solve this by adding a break at the end of each\nblock. However, this optimization isn't helping anything.\nEven if it does make matching faster (which is debatable),\nthis is code that is run only in the test suite, and each\nrun receives at most two of these \"commands\". We should\nfavor simplicity and readability over micro-optimizing.\n\nInstead, let's drop the switch statement completely and\nreplace it with an if/else cascade.\n\nSigned-off-by: Jeff King <peff@peff.net>\n---\n t/helper/test-line-buffer.c | 32 +++++++++++---------------------\n 1 file changed, 11 insertions(+), 21 deletions(-)\n\ndiff --git a/t/helper/test-line-buffer.c b/t/helper/test-line-buffer.c\nindex 81575fe2ab..078dd7e29d 100644\n--- a/t/helper/test-line-buffer.c\n+++ b/t/helper/test-line-buffer.c\n@@ -17,27 +17,17 @@ static uint32_t strtouint32(const char *s)\n \n static void handle_command(const char *command, const char *arg, struct line_buffer *buf)\n {\n-\tswitch (*command) {\n-\tcase 'b':\n-\t\tif (starts_with(command, \"binary \")) {\n-\t\t\tstruct strbuf sb = STRBUF_INIT;\n-\t\t\tstrbuf_addch(&sb, '>');\n-\t\t\tbuffer_read_binary(buf, &sb, strtouint32(arg));\n-\t\t\tfwrite(sb.buf, 1, sb.len, stdout);\n-\t\t\tstrbuf_release(&sb);\n-\t\t\treturn;\n-\t\t}\n-\tcase 'c':\n-\t\tif (starts_with(command, \"copy \")) {\n-\t\t\tbuffer_copy_bytes(buf, strtouint32(arg));\n-\t\t\treturn;\n-\t\t}\n-\tcase 's':\n-\t\tif (starts_with(command, \"skip \")) {\n-\t\t\tbuffer_skip_bytes(buf, strtouint32(arg));\n-\t\t\treturn;\n-\t\t}\n-\tdefault:\n+\tif (starts_with(command, \"binary \")) {\n+\t\tstruct strbuf sb = STRBUF_INIT;\n+\t\tstrbuf_addch(&sb, '>');\n+\t\tbuffer_read_binary(buf, &sb, strtouint32(arg));\n+\t\tfwrite(sb.buf, 1, sb.len, stdout);\n+\t\tstrbuf_release(&sb);\n+\t} else if (starts_with(command, \"copy \")) {\n+\t\tbuffer_copy_bytes(buf, strtouint32(arg));\n+\t} else if (starts_with(command, \"skip \")) {\n+\t\tbuffer_skip_bytes(buf, strtouint32(arg));\n+\t} else {\n \t\tdie(\"unrecognized command: %s\", command);\n \t}\n }\n-- \n2.14.1.1051.g8c9143ec35\n\n"},{"id":"328550","messageId":"20170921062324.ehlfvyng7e62eoti@sigill.intra.peff.net","threadId":"46796","inReplyTo":"20170921062043.la2f3pjsnojirzyw@sigill.intra.peff.net","subject":"[PATCH 3/4] curl_trace(): eliminate switch fallthrough","fromName":"Jeff King","fromEmail":"peff@peff.net","sentAt":"2017-09-21T06:23:24Z","receivedAt":"2017-09-21T06:23:31Z","isPatch":true,"sender":{"key":"peff@peff.net","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/45925?v=4"},"body":"Our trace handler is called by curl with a curl_infotype\nvariable to interpret its data field. The general idea\nis that the compiler can't tell if this was intentional or\nnot, so you should annotate any intentional fall-throughs as\nsuch, leaving it to complain about any unannotated ones.\n\nThere's a GNU __attribute__ which can be used for\nannotation, but of course we'd have to #ifdef it away on\nnon-gcc compilers. Gcc will also recognize\nspecially-formatted comments, which matches our current\npractice. Let's extend that practice to all of the\nunannotated sites (which I did look over and verify that\nthey were behaving as intended).\n\nIdeally in each case we'd actually give some reasons in the\ncomment about why we're falling through, or what we're\nfalling through to. And gcc does support that with\n-Wimplicit-fallthrough=2, which relaxes the comment pattern\nmatching to anything that contains \"fallthrough\" (or a\nvariety of spelling variants). However, this isn't the\ndefault for -Wimplicit-fallthrough, nor for -Wextra. In the\nname of simplicity, it's probably better for us to support\nthe default level, which requires \"fallthrough\" to be the\nonly thing in the comment (modulo some window dressing like\n\"else\" and some punctuation; see the gcc manual for the\ncomplete set of patterns).\n\nThis patch suppresses all warnings due to\n-Wimplicit-fallthrough. We might eventually want to add that\nto the DEVELOPER Makefile knob, but we should probably wait\nuntil gcc 7 is more widely adopted (since earlier versions\nwill complain about the unknown warning type).\n\nSigned-off-by: Jeff King <peff@peff.net>\n---\nThe cases where I shrunk the comments make me a little sad. Maybe we\nshould just declare \"2\" as the right level. Or maybe we should do a\ntwo-comment system, like:\n\n /* explain why we will fall through */\n /* fallthrough */\n\nBut I had trouble finding any meaningful wording for the first comment\nin most of the cases.\n\n apply.c | 3 ++-\n builtin/cat-file.c | 1 +\n builtin/checkout.c | 1 +\n builtin/remote-ext.c | 2 +-\n builtin/submodule--helper.c | 1 +\n Commit dc944b65f1 even touched this function, so we reviewers\nhave no excuse for not having found it.\n\nTechnically this changes the behavior of cat-file --path='', but I\ndon't think that matters.\n\nDo other GET_SHA1_RECORD_PATH callers need similar treatment?\n\n* builtin/grep.c appears to do the right thing (it stores NULL in\n list, so it passes NULL to grep_object, which calls grep_oid, which\n calls grep_source_init, which stores NULL for the grep machinery\n that is able to cope with a NULL).\n\n* builtin/log.c is correctly updated as part of the patch.\n\nThose are the only other callers. So we're safe. *phew*\n\nReviewed-by: Jonathan Nieder <jrnieder@gmail.com>\n"},{"id":"328612","messageId":"xmqqh8vvl7hk.fsf@gitster.mtv.corp.google.com","threadId":"46796","inReplyTo":"20170921062242.t63u2gvpysrrmijs@sigill.intra.peff.net","subject":"Re: [PATCH 2/4] test-line-buffer: simplify command parsing","fromName":"Junio C Hamano","fromEmail":"gitster@pobox.com","sentAt":"2017-09-22T03:47:35Z","receivedAt":"2017-09-22T03:47:42Z","isPatch":true,"sender":{"key":"gitster@pobox.com","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/54884?v=4"},"body":"Jeff King <peff@peff.net> writes:\n\n> However, each case arm of the switch falls through to the\n> one below it.
