I applied for Google Summer of Code 2017 and my project\n\"Incremental rewrite of git-submodules\" has been selected.\nThis project will be done under the guidance of the mentors:\nStefan Beller and Christian Couder.\n\nBrief introduction of the Project:\n\nGit submodule subcommands are currently implemented by using shell script\n'git-submodule.sh'. There are several reasons why we'll prefer not to\nuse the shell script. My project intends to convert the subcommands into\nC code, thus making them builtins. This will increase Git's portability\nand hence the efficiency of working with the git-submodule commands.\nLink to the complete proposal: [1]\n\nBefore I discuss my future plan, first I would like to thank everyone\nwho was involved in helping me apply to GSoC and reviewing my patches.\nI would especially like to thank Stefan Beller, Christian Couder and\nJunio C Hamano for reviewing my patches and helping me get my first\npatch(microproject) merged.\n\nCurrent status of my patches:\n\n1. t2027: avoid using pipes:\nThis patch has been merged to the master branch and also has\nbeen included in the Git v2.13.0\n\n2. Disallow git commands from within unpopulated submodules:\nThis patch was reviewed by Stefan Bellar and since to disallow\nthe git commands in unpopulated submodules required git commands\nto identify whether the user has entered the command in\nan unpopulated or uninitialized submodule individually at\nlow level than catching them for a complete group of\nbuiltin commands. I found the review useful and\nunderstood what needs to be done. Also, I wish to work on\nit, but currently I would like to work on my project first.\nI have included this issue in my wishlist and will\nwork on this after completing my project.\n\n3. submodule: port subcommand foreach from shell to C\nI have started implementing the suggestion in the previous\nreviews and currently I'm adding more test-cases which my\npatch still fails. Also, still this patch is failing tests\n6, 7, 8 and 9 from t7407-submodule-foreach and test 64 from\nt3600-rm.\nLink to the patch: [2]\n\nPlan for this week:\n\nAccording to my proposal, time till 15th May is allocated as\ncommunity bonding period and hence I have\nresumed taking a brief overview of the files:\n1. strbuf.h\n2. Various API files from Documentation/technical\nsince some functions from these may be used in every future porting.\n\nI'm also aiming to read carefully:\n1. submodule.h and submodule.c\n2. git-submodule.sh\n3. builtin/submodule--helper.c\nsince in every submodule subcommand's porting I'll be using the\nfunctions from these files and it will also help me avoid code\nduplication in future.\n\nAlong with this, I'm also working on porting of the subcommand\nforeach and wish to complete it before the end of the community\nbonding period.\n\nI'll officially start coding from 16th May, as per my proposed\nschedule and will be pushing my work on GitHub [3] regularly so\nthat the mentors can monitor the progress of the project. Also, I'll\nbe posting a weekly update on changes made throughout the week\nand my plan for the next week.\n\nThanks,\nPrathamesh Chavan\n\n[1]: https://public-inbox.org/git/CAME+mvXBuLbbRJu1DAA8o-u6DeZATKypH=W=hPEks3KL5WMX+Q@mail.gmail.com/\n[2]: https://public-inbox.org/git/20170422195804.18477-1-pc44800@gmail.com/T/#u\n[3]: https://github.com/pratham-pc/git/\n"},{"id":"319078","messageId":"alpine.DEB.2.21.1.1705081316220.146734@virtualbox","threadId":"45896","inReplyTo":"CAME+mvXtA6iZNfErTX5tYB-o-5xa1yesAG5h=iP_Z2_zL_kOnQ@mail.gmail.com","subject":"Re: [GSoC] Project Selected: Incremental rewrite of git-submodules","fromName":"Johannes Schindelin","fromEmail":"johannes.schindelin@gmx.de","sentAt":"2017-05-08T11:16:57Z","receivedAt":"2017-05-08T11:17:05Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"johannes.schindelin@gmx.de","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/127790?v=4"},"body":"Hi,\n\nOn Mon, 8 May 2017, Prathamesh Chavan wrote:\n\n> I am Prathamesh Chavan, an undergraduate student from the department\n> of Computer Science and Engineering, at Indian Institue of Technology,\n> Kharagpur.
