Doing this makes 30% of the\ntest suite fail. Most of the diffstat below is just adding:\n\n test_fails_on_unusual_directory_names=1\n\nTo those tests that failed, which makes them not use these garbage\ntrash directory names.\n\nSome of those failures are legitimate bugs, some are an artifact of us\nusing shellscripting as our test language (namely interpolating ' and\n\" somewhere).\n\nIt might make sense to mark these tests more granularly, e.g.:\n\n test_fails_on_unusual_directory_name_types=quotes\n\netc., if the test fails just because of \" or ', but I think as it is\nthis makes sense for inclusion, it makes sure we don't regress on the\nremaining 70% of our test suite.\n\nÆvar Arnfjörð Bjarmason (2):\n tests: mark tests that fail when the TEST_DIRECTORY is unusual\n test-lib: exhaustively insert non-alnum tests that fail when the TEST_DIRECTORY has a name that's\nunusual, i.e. contains control characters, various punctuation etc.\n\nThis change is followed by a change that adds the code that picks up\ntest_fails_on_unusual_directory_names to test-lib.sh, but comes before\nthat change to not break most of the test suite during bisecting.\n\nThis change is the result of:\n\n for f in $(grep -B3 last_fail_time .prove |grep sh | perl -pe 's/^ (.*?):/$1/');\n do perl -0666 -pi -e 's/^(test_description)/test_fails_on_unusual_directory_names=1\\n$1/m' $f\n done\n\nAfter running the test suite with the aforementioned change to\ntest-lib.sh. The only exception is t0000-basic.sh, since its testing\nthe test suite itself its failing 'test --verbose' test needs a change\nto the test suite wrapper code to be excluded.\n\nSigned-off-by: Ævar E.g.\nsome capabilities check in the test suite to check if we can even\ncreate these sorts of paths on the local filesystem.\n\nA couple of comments on the above though:\n\na) If we have something that's a more strict mode that makes tests\nfail due to buggy code in various scenarios, we gain the most from\nhaving it on by default, and having some optional mode to have devs\ne.g. disable it for manual inspection of the test directories.\n\nMost of the running of the test suite that really matters, i.e. just\nbefore the software is delivered to end users, is going to be running\nin some non-interactive build system preparing a package.\n\nb) I think any sort of magic like using it with 'make test', but not\nwhen the *.sh is manually run, will just lead to frustrating seemingly\nheisenbugs from people trying to debug the test suite when things do\nfail, i.e. you run 'make test' on some obscure platform we haven't\nfixed path bugs on, 10 fail, you manually inspect them and every one\nof them succeeds, because some --use-garbage-dirs option wasn't\npassed.\n\n>> This includes all the control characters, !, [], {} etc. the \".\"\n>> character isn't included because it's already in the directory name,\n>> and nor is \"/\" for obvious reasons, although that would actually work,\n>> we'd just create a subdirectory, which would make the tests harder to\n>> inspect when they fail.i\n>\n> 1. I don't find anything wrong with saying \"your local filesystem\npath for a repository cannot contain newlines; if it does, some features\nmay be unavailable\".\n\n> URLs, for example, may contain \"funny characters\", including multi-byte\n> characters of which the second byte is 0x0a. And if we're not encoding when we\nshould, then that's a bug. But the arguments that are fed to things like\ngit-clone _aren't_ URLs. They're a specifier that uses some heuristics\nto decide between the various cases (URLs, host:path specifiers, local\npaths). If you feed syntactic garbage, aborting the operation (and\nfailing the test!) may be the right thing for git to do.\n\n> > If there are security bugs where a malicious input can cause us\n> > to do something bad, that's something to care about. But that's very\n> > different than asking \"do these tests run to completion with a funny\n> > input\".\n> \n> If the tests do not complete, git is doing something unexpected.\n\nI very much disagree with that. Git's test operate under a set of\nassumptions, and if you violate those assumptions, then the failures are\nnot meaningful.\n\nTake alternates, for instance. The on-disk storage format cannot\nrepresent paths with newlines in them. If a test does:\n\n git clone -s \"$(pwd)\" parent.git child &&\n test -d child\n\nthen that test is going to fail if the test directory has a newline in\nit. But that doesn't tell us anything meaningful. Not all tests are meaningful in all environments.\nThat doesn't mean that the tests are generally meaningless.\n\nAlso, we're talking about two pretty different things here: gits \ninteraction with the file system, and git's interaction with whatever \nshell its scripts are using.\nIn an ideal world, these two aspects would be orthogonal and could be \ntested independently of each other. Since in practice we do have \ncorrelations and dependencies, this isn't always possible, but it's what \nwe should aim for.\n\n> You can rewrite all the tests to say \"skip this test if there's a\n> newline in the test directory\". Unless and \nuntil the git docs clearly state that things may break if \"funny \ncharacters\" are being used, and where.\n\n> But again, I'm happy to be proven wrong.\n\nWith security, you need to be confident about the absence of /any/ type \nof hole, not the absence of a /specific/ type of hole such as a shell \ninjection.\nSo the way forward isn't proving you wrong by providing a specific \nexploit, it's making sure that no exploit with URLs and file names can \npossibly exist.\n\nNow if I'm reading things like \"heuristics\" and \"git uses URL-specific \ncode even after it has determined it's not a URL\"... well, that's the \nexact opposite of reassuring messages.\n\n > I just don't think\n> plastering control characters into the test directory names all the time\n> is a good way of finding those problems (and doesn't balance out the\n> cost).\n\nFair enough.\n"},{"id":"316509","messageId":"20170410192223.dbcysbbq5ei3wglj@sigill.intra.peff.net","threadId":"45642","inReplyTo":"d1a71326-06bc-4133-de2b-7d42f525f7a4@durchholz.org","subject":"Re: [PATCH 2/2] test-lib: exhaustively insert non-alnum ASCII into the TRASH_DIRECTORY name","fromName":"Jeff King","fromEmail":"peff@peff.net","sentAt":"2017-04-10T19:22:24Z","receivedAt":"2017-04-10T19:22:37Z","isPatch":true,"sender":{"key":"peff@peff.net","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/45925?v=4"},"body":"On Mon, Apr 10, 2017 at 08:19:40PM +0200, Joachim Durchholz wrote:\n\n> > I very much disagree with that. My point is that the outcome depends\non that paths. So you cannot just take a test which runs \"git clone -s\"\nand expect it to work both with and without paths with newlines. Try \"2>&1 | cat -A\" when debugging this sort of thing (our\nerror and warning messages clean up cruft like this already, but\ninformational messages don't always go through vreportf()).\n\nAnyway, something like this would fix it (it actually adds \"\\r\" to the\nconfig format, which is how we handle \\n and \\t; we could do it without\ntouching the parsing side if we taught store_write_pair() to recognize\nthat \\r needs to go in double-quotes).\n\ndiff --git a/config.c b/config.c\nindex 1a4d85537..4a36a37ba 100644\n--- a/config.c\n+++ b/config.c\n@@ -526,6 +526,9 @@ static char *parse_value(void)\n \t\t\tcase 'n':\n \t\t\t\tc = '\\n';\n \t\t\t\tbreak;\n+\t\t\tcase 'r':\n+\t\t\t\tc = '\\r';\n+\t\t\t\tbreak;\n \t\t\t/* Some characters escape as themselves */\n \t\t\tcase '\\\\': case '\"':\n \t\t\t\tbreak;\n@@ -2172,6 +2175,9 @@ static int store_write_pair(int fd, const char *key, const char *value)\n \t\tcase '\\t':\n \t\t\tstrbuf_addstr(&sb, \"\\\\t\");\n \t\t\tbreak;\n+\t\tcase '\\r':\n+\t\t\tstrbuf_addstr(&sb, \"\\\\r\");\n+\t\t\tbreak;\n \t\tcase '\"':\n \t\tcase '\\\\':\n \t\t\tstrbuf_addch(&sb, '\\\\');\n\n-Peff\n"},{"id":"316548","messageId":"5f6815f7-fd47-c690-9fe2-ad7077b7b670@durchholz.org","threadId":"45642","inReplyTo":"CACBZZX7OfM-zivJAQMXdNarHDjAhzQhqGNZNs2QqDUyOo3AA0g@mail.gmail.com","subject":"Re: [PATCH 2/2] test-lib: exhaustively insert non-alnum ASCII into the TRASH_DIRECTORY name","fromName":"Joachim Durchholz","fromEmail":"jo@durchholz.org","sentAt":"2017-04-11T06:28:35Z","receivedAt":"2017-04-11T06:28:45Z","isPatch":true,"sender":{"key":"jo@durchholz.org","avatar":null},"body":"Am 11.04.2017 um 01:23 schrieb Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason:\n > * Much of it fails due to GIT_CEILING_DIRECTORIES not working with\n > dirs with \":\" in the name.\n\nOh.
