replaces run_apply() implementation with a new one that\nuses the apply api that has been previously prepared in\napply.c and apply.h.\n\nThis shoud improve performance a lot in certain cases.\n\nAs the previous implementation was creating a new `git apply`\nprocess to apply each patch, it could be slow on systems like\nWindows where it is costly to create new processes.\n\nAlso the new `git apply` process had to read the index from\ndisk, and when the process was done the calling process\ndiscarded its own index and read back from disk the new\nindex that had been created by the `git apply` process.\n\nThis could be very inefficient with big repositories that\nhave big index files, especially when the system decided\nthat it was a good idea to run the `git apply` processes on\na different processor core.\n\nAlso eliminating index reads enables further performance\nimprovements by using:\n\n`git update-index --split-index`\n\nSigned-off-by: Christian Couder I\ndidn't check, but for example if an apply function calls a function\nfrom another part of git and this function uses error(...) in case of\nerror, I would have to change this function too.\n\nI could also introduce a hack like a global variable that would tell\nerror() to shut up, but I am not sure that would be more elegant.\n\nThanks,\nChristian.\n"},{"id":"285596","messageId":"572BA80E.3000309@kdbg.org","threadId":"42129","inReplyTo":"CAP8UFD2f1L3YKNBA4zP1bmGe8BQitxZp-aDsGP5UTDv06LbLBg@mail.gmail.com","subject":"Re: [PATCH 80/83] run-command: make dup_devnull() non static","fromName":"Johannes Sixt","fromEmail":"j6t@kdbg.org","sentAt":"2016-05-05T20:07:42Z","receivedAt":"2016-05-05T20:07:42Z","isPatch":true,"sender":{"key":"j6t@kdbg.org","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/14810926?v=4"},"body":"Am 05.05.2016 um 11:50 schrieb Christian Couder:\n> On Mon, Apr 25, 2016 at 5:05 PM, Johannes Schindelin\n> <Johannes.Schindelin@gmx.de> wrote:\n>> Hi Chris,\n>>\n>> On Sun, 24 Apr 2016, Christian Couder wrote:\n>>\n>>> diff --git a/run-command.c b/run-command.c\n>>> index 8c7115a..29d2bda 100644\n>>> --- a/run-command.c\n>>> +++ b/run-command.c\n>>> @@ -85,7 +85,7 @@ static inline void close_pair(int fd[2])\n>>>   }\n>>>\n>>>   #ifndef GIT_WINDOWS_NATIVE\n>>> -static inline void dup_devnull(int to)\n>>> +void dup_devnull(int to)\n>>>   {\n>>\n>> The #ifndef GIT_WINDOWS_NATIVE rings very, very loud alarm bells.\n>\n> Yeah, but I must say that I don't know what I should do about this.\n> Do you have a suggestion? Because there is no other way, that's why: you\ncannot change the code that is spawned by start_command().\n\n> for Linux and the following for Windows:\n> \n>     if (cmd->no_stderr)\n>         fherr = open(\"/dev/null\", O_RDWR);\n>         [...]\n>     if (cmd->no_stdout)\n>         fhout = open(\"/dev/null\", O_RDWR);\n\nAnd it is very well contained on Windows. No other callers. The code\nis limited to run_command.c.\n\n> so the current code is already using dup_devnull() for Linux that you\n> don't want me to use, and it looks like there is already a simple way\n> to do that on Windows.\n\nThe difference between the code in master and what your patches try to do\nis that in the latter case, you want to dup() just for a while, to shut up\na code path that is not only known very well, but our very own code that\nis easily changed, only to dup() it *back* in the end.\n\nThe claim is that this libifies the procedure. But it makes the code\nreally nasty for use as a library: if this is run in a thread (and you\nknow that we are going to have to do this in the near future, for\nperformance reasons), it will completely mess up all the other threads\nbecause it messes with the global file descriptors.\n\nAnd that is why it is ugly: it incurs an enormous technical debt that will\nmake code changes substantially more complicated down the road.\n\nIn essence, you save yourself a little time by sloppily dup()ing back and\nforth. At the expense of making the life much harder for the developer who\nneeds to use your code as a library function.\n\nAnd actually, hiding even fatal errors might be an ugly side effect of the\ncurrent implementation, an unfortunate implementation detail, really, not\nsomething we want to preserve when libifying the code. And actually,\ndup()ing the *caller's* stdout is not exactly preserving the current\nbehavior that dup()s the *called process'* stdout.\n\nSo yes, I find the proposed patch inelegant.\n\nIf others are okay with this, I will shut up. But I have to point out that\nit is ugly code, plain and simple, that silences an entire global file\ndescriptor, just temporarily, only to avoid a careful set of patches that\nintroduces a silent mode to the library functions that need to be called,\nwhich might even facilitate other libifying efforts.\n\nI hope you do not take this as a personal attack. It is not intended as\nsuch. It is intended to help end up with the best possible code quality.\n\nCiao,\nJohannes\n"},{"id":"285881","messageId":"CACsJy8DUcLWQ6AwyLE+CF+TxZtqDLS=82peizSf4TrZ3q=qjJg@mail.gmail.com","threadId":"42129","inReplyTo":"alpine.DEB.2.20.1605080811380.4092@virtualbox","subject":"Re: [PATCH 80/83] run-command: make dup_devnull() non static","fromName":"Duy Nguyen","fromEmail":"pclouds@gmail.com","sentAt":"2016-05-08T10:15:53Z","receivedAt":"2016-05-08T10:15:53Z","isPatch":true,"sender":{"key":"pclouds@gmail.com","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/720?v=4"},"body":"On Sun, May 8, 2016 at 1:33 PM, Johannes Schindelin\n<Johannes.Schindelin@gmx.de> wrote:\n> The claim is that this libifies the procedure. And do we change those shared states temporarily in our functions?\nNo, we don't. The object db is not made temporarily inaccessible while a\ncertain function runs. The index access is not temporarily disabled while\na certain function runs.\n\nAnd this is what that dup() dance does: it disables *all* output, not only\nfrom the current thread.\n\n> And I'm not sure if multi-thread really helps here. That is, instead of\ndup()ing the standard error stream out, you would accumulate the\nerrors for a caller that asks their errors not directly sent to\nthe standard error stream, so that it can choose to either show it\nat the end, or ignore it altogether.\n\nHow far can you go with just set-error-routine?  Are there things,\nother than the file descriptors, that you need to futz with in order\nto covert that \"we'd fallback, so this early round must be silent\"\ncodepath?\n"}]}
