Two of these tests fail when run\n against David's patch 04 due to changes in output.\n\n* Arranges for the \"flags\" argument to read_raw_ref() always to be\n non-NULL, which eliminates the need for a lot of \"if (flags)\"\n guards.\n\n* Eliminates the now-superfluous \"bad_name\" local variable.\n\n* Move the management of the scratch space sb_path from\n resolve_ref_unsafe() to read_raw_ref().\n\n* Inlines resolve_ref_1() into resolve_ref_unsafe().\n\n* Changes some callers of resolve_ref_unsafe() to pass flags=NULL\n instead of creating a local flags variable that is never used.\n\n* Changes some callers to check for errors before using the return\n value of resolve_ref_unsafe().\n\nI hope that the result is easier to understand and audit, even though\nit consists of more patches (indeed, *because* of that).\n\nThis patch series applies on top of David's patch 03/33 the same place\nDavid applied it in his repo [2]. It is also available in situ from my\nGitHub repo [3] as branch \"pluggable-backends-patch4\"\n\nIf this series is used, later patches from David's series would need\nto be rebased on top of it. This is a little bit messy but not\ndifficult; the result can be seen in branch\n\"pluggable-backends-rebased\" in my GitHub repo [3] (albeit without\nadjusting the LMDB-related patches).\n\nMichael\n\n[1] http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.version-control.git/287971\n[2] https://github.com/dturner-tw/git/tree/dturner/pluggable-backends\n[3] It's always a relief to get work merged\nand not have to keep porting it along.\n\nThere are three patches later in the series that (I think) also don't\nhave specifically to do with pluggable backends. These could potentially\nalso be considered for earlier merge to reduce the size of what remains:\n\n* refs: don't dereference on rename\n* refs: on symref reflog expire, lock symref not referrent\n* refs: resolve symbolic refs first\n\nBut note that I haven't audited those patches yet, so I'm not saying\nthat they are necessarily ready to be merged.\n\nMichael\n\n[1] https://github.com/git/git/blob/master/Documentation/SubmittingPatches\n"},{"id":"282107","messageId":"1459282370.2976.7.camel@twopensource.com","threadId":"41792","inReplyTo":"56F76E2C.5030700@alum.mit.edu","subject":"Re: [PATCH 00/21] replacement for dt/refs-backend-lmdb v7 patch 04/33","fromName":"David Turner","fromEmail":"dturner@twopensource.com","sentAt":"2016-03-29T20:12:50Z","receivedAt":"2016-03-29T20:12:50Z","isPatch":true,"sender":{"key":"novalis@novalis.org","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/77003?v=4"},"body":"On Sun, 2016-03-27 at 07:22 +0200, Michael Haggerty wrote:\n> On 03/24/2016 07:47 AM, David Turner wrote:\n> > [...]\n> > I incorporated your changes into the lmdb backend. For\nexample, the version of this patch series that Junio has in his tree was\nbased on master + sb/submodule-parallel-update.
