It introduces two additional helper functions. One\nis has_object_file, which is the equivalent of has_sha1_file. The name\nwas chosen to be slightly more logical than has_oid_file, although it\ncan be changed if desired.\n\nThe second helper function is parse_oid_hex. It works much like\nget_oid_hex, but it takes an optional length argument and returns the\nnumber of bytes parsed on success (40) and 0 on error. It's designed to\nbe more useful in conditionals and to enable us to avoid having to write\nGIT_SHA1_HEXSZ in favor of simply using the return value.\n\nThe final piece in this series is the conversion of struct object to use\nstruct object_id. This is a necessarily large patch because of the\nlarge number of places this code is used.\n\nbrian m. carlson (8):\n refs: convert some internal functions to use object_id\n sha1_file: introduce That is something we can reasonably review and discuss.\n\nIt's mostly manual, but some pieces (the is_null_sha1 and sha1_to_hex\nconversions) were scripted using the embedded Ruby interpreter in Vim.\nThe script I used to do that is below.\n\n def refactor(s)\n methods = %w(is_null_sha1 sha1_to_hex).map do |m|\n [m, m.sub('sha1', 'oid')]\n end.to_h\n s.sub(/\\A(.*)(is_null_sha1|sha1_to_hex)\\(([^)]+)(\\.|->)sha1\\)(.*)\\z/) do\n [$1, methods[$2], \"(&#{$3}#{$4}oid)\", $5].join('')\n end\n end\n \n def replace_line(method)\n func = Object.method(method)\n VIM::Buffer.current.line = func.call(VIM::Buffer.current.line)\n end\n\nIt was invoked as replace_line(:refactor), so it basically modified each\nrelevant line by passing it through refactor.\n\nSorry for choosing a language that's less familiar to the list: if I had\nknown you'd want to see it, I would have used Perl.\n-- \nbrian m. carlson / brian with sandals: Houston, Texas, US\n+1 832 623 2791 | http://www.crustytoothpaste.net/~bmc | My opinion only\nOpenPGP: RSA v4 4096b: 88AC E9B2 9196 305B A994 7552 F1BA 225C 0223 B187\n"},{"id":"263597","messageId":"5579AC1D.6000606@alum.mit.edu","threadId":"39573","inReplyTo":"1433867316-663554-4-git-send-email-sandals@crustytoothpaste.net","subject":"Re: [PATCH 3/8] Convert struct ref to use object_id.","fromName":"Michael Haggerty","fromEmail":"mhagger@alum.mit.edu","sentAt":"2015-06-11T15:41:17Z","receivedAt":"2015-06-11T15:41:17Z","isPatch":true,"sender":{"key":"mhagger@alum.mit.edu","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/119718?v=4"},"body":"I visually inspected patches 1 and 2 without finding any problems.\n\nRegarding this patch, I saw a few functions where you could convert\nlocal variables to \"struct object_id\" and then change function calls\nlike hashcpy() to oidcpy(). So often this\nwill require one line of code to call the function and a second one to\ntest the return value.\n\nFor example, consider how awkward it will be to rewrite code that now\nlooks like\n\n if (hex && !get_sha1_hex(hex, sha1) && hex[40] == '\\n')\n\n\nYou might instead consider the style of interface used by skip_prefix(),\nwhich I've really come to like:\n\nint parse_oid_hex(const char *hex, struct object_id *oid,\n const char **out)\n{\n\tif (get_sha1_hex(hex, oid->hash))\n\t\treturn -1; /* failure */\n\n\tif (out)\n\t\t*out = hex + GIT_SHA1_HEXSZ;\n\treturn 0;\n}\n\nThis function could of course take a \"len\" parameter too. Note that it\nuses our usual convention that success is denoted by returning 0.\n\nWith this definition, the above code could be rewritten to (if the old\nvalue of hex is not needed again)\n\n if (hex && !parse_oid_hex(hex, &oid, &hex) && *hex == '\\n')\n\n> ---\n> cache.h | 9 +++++++++\n> hex.c | 7 +++++++\n> 2 files changed, 16 insertions(+)\n> \n> diff --git a/cache.h b/cache.h\n> index fa1f067..f3b829f 100644\n> --- a/cache.h\n> +++ b/cache.h\n> @@ -1012,6 +1012,15 @@ extern int for_each_abbrev(const char *prefix, each_abbrev_fn, void *);\n> extern int get_sha1_hex(const char *hex, unsigned char *sha1);\n> extern int get_oid_hex(const char *hex, struct object_id *sha1);\n> \n> +/*\n> + * Like get_oid_hex, but accepts an optional length argument, which may be -1\n> + * if the string is terminated by a non-hex character.
