Michael does not use git-multimail himself,\nand does not find time to work on it. I'm joining the effort, but\ncurrently have no time either. But eventually I'll go through the list\nof pending pull-requests, and we'll actually get new code.\n\n-- \nMatthieu Moy\nhttp://www-verimag.imag.fr/~moy/\n"},{"id":"260084","messageId":"553E9671.3000902@alum.mit.edu","threadId":"39166","inReplyTo":"xmqqfv7lwfvx.fsf@gitster.dls.corp.google.com","subject":"Re: [PATCH] Update git-multimail to version 1.0.2","fromName":"Michael Haggerty","fromEmail":"mhagger@alum.mit.edu","sentAt":"2015-04-27T20:05:05Z","receivedAt":"2015-04-27T20:05:05Z","isPatch":true,"sender":{"key":"mhagger@alum.mit.edu","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/119718?v=4"},"body":"On 04/27/2015 09:05 PM, Junio C Hamano wrote:\n> Matthieu Moy <Matthieu.Moy@grenoble-inp.fr> writes:\n> \n>> Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com> writes:\n>> [...]\n>>> Well, the patch does not update git_multimail.py at all. Matthieu, your explanations have\nbeen exactly correct. Let me just add a couple of details:\n\nJunio, you asked me (off-list) for an update to README and README.Git.\nThose two files come from the git-multimail repo, as\ngit-multimail/README and git-multimail/README.Git.template,\nrespectively, so I modified the files in our repo then submitted the\ncorresponding patch to your repo.\n\nIt's true that only documentation changes are in the patch, but it still\nseemed like good practice to create a tag and all that. If nothing else,\nit will make it easier to figure out the baseline for future code drops.\n\nThere have been a couple of small software changes in git-multimail's\nmaster branch, but I didn't include those in the patch I submitted to\nyou because I thought you wouldn't want to have code changes so close to\nthe release. So 1.0.2 is on the newly-created \"maint\" branch.\n\n> I honestly am surprised that, after seeing the announcement about \"a\n> new repository, co-maintainer and multiple contributors\", no code\n> change is made over the past 12 months.\n\nI totally understand your disappointment. Mea culpa. That, in fact, is\nWHY I'm so happy that Matthieu has agreed to help maintain the project.\nIf it's any consolation, none of the user feedback that I have been so\nremiss in addressing involves serious or security-related bugs.\n\n> I would understand it if the description were \"The version in this\n> directory matches the upstream project as of 2015-04-27\", though.\n\nI think of the contents of contrib/hooks/multimail as a whole, so even\nif the software hasn't changed, updated documentation *has* been\n\"obtained\" from upstream. But feel free to adjust the text in whatever\nway you like.\n\nMichael\n\n-- \nMichael Haggerty\nmhagger@alum.mit.edu\n"},{"id":"260109","messageId":"xmqqfv7kvhwd.fsf@gitster.dls.corp.google.com","threadId":"39166","inReplyTo":"553E9671.3000902@alum.mit.edu","subject":"Re: [PATCH] Update git-multimail to version 1.0.2","fromName":"Junio C Hamano","fromEmail":"gitster@pobox.com","sentAt":"2015-04-28T07:20:02Z","receivedAt":"2015-04-28T07:20:02Z","isPatch":true,"sender":{"key":"gitster@pobox.com","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/54884?v=4"},"body":"Michael Haggerty <mhagger@alum.mit.edu> writes:\n\n> On 04/27/2015 09:05 PM, Junio C Hamano wrote:\n> ...\n>> Hmm, that may be technically correct but it is grossly misleading to\n>> update the existing \"was obtained on 2014-04-07\" to \"was obtained on\n>> 2015-04-27\", especially if nothing was actually obtained, isn't it?\n> ...\n> It's true that only documentation changes are in the patch, but it still\n> seemed like good practice to create a tag and all that. Mea culpa.\n\nI am not *disappointed* at all.  No recent changes do not\nautomatically mean abandoned software---it may be a sign of\nstability.  I was just *surprised*.\n\nAfter all, 1.0.2 tag will hopefully soon become stale, and people\nhave to go to the upstream to see what the latest version is called\nanyway, instead of looking at my tree.  So the primary value of\nhaving a copy in my tree is (1) to have the URL for the true\nupstream and (2) to have a working version that is not too stale.\nSo from that point of view, a patch without the update to the\nversion numbers or datestamps, i.e. just changes the URLs and\nupdates who to contact, would have been more truthful, unless it\nalso updated the code.\n\nIt was just that the update changed \"the last obtained date\" without\nchanging anything of substance that was \"obtained\" (because there\nwasn't anything new to be obtained) and that looked unexpected and\nsurprised me.  That's all.\n"}]}
