If a\nleading ~ isn't allowed, then this isn't a bug.\n\nI'm using git-gui version 0.19.GITGUI, from git version 2.3.4, from\nthe Ubuntu PPA.\ngit  2:2.3.4-1avh1~utopic1\n\n\nsteps to reproduce:\n\nmkdir -p git-shellmeta && cd git-shellmeta\ngit init\ntouch '~bin' '~xyz'\ngit gui &\n\nIn the gui, ~bin appears in the list of files with unstaged changes.\nHowever, instead of appearing as a file, the diff pane shows\nGit Repository (subproject)\n\nSelecting ~xyz pops up a dialog saying: \n\nError loading file: \nuser \"xyz\" doesn't exist\n\nSo I guess username expansion is happening somewhere it shouldn't.\n\nThe home directory of the \"bin\" user on my system is /bin, which is\nnot a (subdir of a) git repo.  The message that ~bin is a subproject\nis another symptom of this bug.\n\n\nPS.\nno, I didn't name that ~bin file.  Someone else left it lying around\nin a directory.\n\n-- \n#define X(x,y) x##y\nPeter Cordes ;  e-mail: X(peter@cor , des.ca)\n\n\"The gods confound the man who first found out how to distinguish the hours!\n Confound him, too, who in this place set up a sundial, to cut and hack\n my day so wretchedly into small pieces!\" -- Plautus, 200 BC\n"}]}
