Everyone\nelse is expected to be covered by their academic employer - and if not,\nit's not even okay to ask the organisers. And by the way to make that clear, it\nwould be nice if the Git project could say for example every few weeks\nhow many people have asked for something.\n\nI don't think there is a perfect way to do this kind of thing, but I\nthink being more transparent and upfront while still taking care of\nprivacy issues and leaving some room for discussion, can only help.\n\n>> Apart from that it's also possible to find ways to accommodate some\n>> developers for free, if they don't mind crashing in someone's spare\n>> room.\n>>\n>> So please don't hesitate to ask if you would like to come.\n>\n> These five lines, by not explicitly saying something like \"the first\n> 2 people who ask can crash in Christian's spare bedroom\", is doing\n> exactly the same thing as Peff did by saying \"please talk to me\n> off-list\", it seems to me at least. Both keep things informal and\n> simple, and both arrange things on case-by-case basis as needed.\n\nI must say that it is quite different, because in case of my spare\nbedroom I am the only one who decides according to my own priorities.\nFor example if too many people ask to be accommodated and one of them\nhelped me personally in the past, I will be much more likely to chose\nhim regardless of his importance for the Git project.\n\n> And I think that is better than setting a seemingly hard rules\n> upfront, and causing more problems unnecessarily (e.g. who decides\n> who are the 5 most important, for example?).\n\nFirst the rules are not so hardly set, especially because they say \"at\nleast this amount\", so in case of doubt there is room for paying back\nmore to more people than initially planned.\n\nAnd anyway in the \"case-by-case as needed basis\", you still have the\nproblem to decide how much to pay back each one, in case people ask\nfor more than what is available. In this case it could be seen as very\nunfair that rules are defined or negociated on the fly. (Though I\nagree that in the past it went very well, but then I think it can only\nimprove things to have some rules defined at the beginning.)\n"},{"id":"257157","messageId":"CAP8UFD2qGBPiNaDmx1OELM45TZqSqKkHZkdVOqupWKKxPxbvOw@mail.gmail.com","threadId":"38646","inReplyTo":"54F986D6.5000607@drmicha.warpmail.net","subject":"Re: [ANNOUNCE] Git Merge Contributors Summit, April 8th, Paris","fromName":"Christian Couder","fromEmail":"christian.couder@gmail.com","sentAt":"2015-03-06T12:55:02Z","receivedAt":"2015-03-06T12:55:02Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"christian.couder@gmail.com","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/208954?v=4"},"body":"On Fri, Mar 6, 2015 at 11:52 AM, Michael J Gruber\n<git@drmicha.warpmail.net> wrote:\n> Junio C Hamano venit, vidit, dixit 05.03.2015 23:24:\n>> Christian Couder <christian.couder@gmail.com> writes:\n>>\n>>>\n>>> I'd like the Git project to set up a more organized way to pay back\n>>> the travel costs and the conference fee to the developers who come.\n>>> For example the Git project could say that it will at least pay back:\n>>>\n>>> - all the travel costs to the 5 most important Git developers who come and ask,\n>>> - half the travel costs to the 5 next most important Git developers\n>>> who come and ask,\n>>> - all the conference fee to the 15 most important Git developers who\n>>> come and ask,\n>>>\n>>> I think it could help developers decide to come, and it looks like\n>>> enough funding could be available, thanks to GitHub and the GSoC\n>>> money.
