Or do you mean when you have detached your\nHEAD at a tag (e.g., by doing \"git checkout v1.0\").\n\nIn the latter case, git v1.8.3 and later will print the tag name\nalready.\n\nIf the former, I don't have a strong opinion (it is not something I\nwould find useful, but I can see how others might). If it were not\nintrusive, like:\n\n  # On branch master (v1.0)\n\nI don't think anybody would complain. It does involve enumerating all of\nthe refs to calculate it, which might be noticeable. OTOH, \"status\" is\nnot exactly a lightweight operation already, since it has to refresh the\nwhole index.\n\nYou might also consider just showing \"git describe\" output, which will\nshow a tag if you are on it, but also show your distance to the nearest\ntag otherwise.  It is more expensive to calculate, though.\n\n-Peff\n"},{"id":"228669","messageId":"20131009190354.GK9464@google.com","threadId":"35093","inReplyTo":"387b8c28.601abe13.5255a661.c2c2f@o2.pl","subject":"Re: Make \"git status\" show if on tag","fromName":"Jonathan Nieder","fromEmail":"jrnieder@gmail.com","sentAt":"2013-10-09T19:03:54Z","receivedAt":"2013-10-09T19:03:54Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"jrnieder@gmail.com","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/281595?v=4"},"body":"Hi Bartek,\n\nbpuzon wrote:\n\n> I was wondering if a patch that adds the tag information (something\n> like what \"git log --decorate\" produces) to the \"git status\" would\n> be welcome?\n\nIt would slow down \"git status\" a little.  I haven't thought carefully\nabout whether that cost is worth it --- it's hard to know without a\nrough patch to try it out. ;-)\n\nSo the patch would be welcome, as a way to find out.\n\nThanks,\nJonathan\n"}]}
