The\ngettext manual says:\n\n puts (\"Apollo 13 scenario: Stack overflow handling failed.\");\n puts (\"On the next stack overflow we will crash!!!\");\n\n Should these two statements merged into a single one? I would recommend\n to merge them if the two sentences are related to each other, because\n then it makes it easier for the translator to understand and translate\n both. On the other hand, if one of the two messages is a stereotypic\n one, occurring in other places as well, you will do a favour to the\n translator by not merging the two.\n[...]\n Translatable strings should be limited to one paragraph; don't let a\n single message be longer than ten lines.\n\nSo it seems that concatenating sentences indeed falls into a gray area\nbetween \"avoid sentence lego\" and \"split at paragraphs\". And Peff's\nstyle of splitting it saves the translators work because the first part\nof the message is shared among two code paths.\n\n-- \nThomas Rast\ntrast@{inf,student}.ethz.ch\n"},{"id":"224739","messageId":"20130807092220.GA4563@sigill.intra.peff.net","threadId":"34627","inReplyTo":"87r4e5vp0r.fsf@linux-k42r.v.cablecom.net","subject":"Re: [PATCH] l10n: de.po: translate 5 messages","fromName":"Jeff King","fromEmail":"peff@peff.net","sentAt":"2013-08-07T09:22:20Z","receivedAt":"2013-08-07T09:22:20Z","isPatch":true,"sender":{"key":"peff@peff.net","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/45925?v=4"},"body":"On Wed, Aug 07, 2013 at 11:17:08AM +0200, Thomas Rast wrote:\n\n> This results from Peff's c17592a (commit: tweak empty cherry pick advice\n> for sequencer, 2013-07-26):\n> \n> diff --git a/builtin/commit.c b/builtin/commit.c\n> index a17a5df..39717d5 100644\n> --- a/builtin/commit.c\n> +++ b/builtin/commit.c\n> @@ -62,8 +62,18 @@\n> \"If you wish to commit it anyway, use:\\n\"\n> \"\\n\"\n> \" git commit --allow-empty\\n\"\n> +\"\\n\");\n> +\n> +static const char empty_cherry_pick_advice_single[] =\n> +N_(\"Otherwise, please use 'git reset'\\n\");\n> +\n> +static const char empty_cherry_pick_advice_multi[] =\n> +N_(\"If you wish to skip this commit, use:\\n\"\n> \"\\n\"\n> -\"Otherwise, please use 'git reset'\\n\");\n> +\" git reset\\n\"\n> +\"\\n\"\n> +\"Then \\\"git cherry-pick --continue\\\" will resume cherry-picking\\n\"\n> +\"the remaining commits.\\n\");\n> \n> static const char *use_message_buffer;\n> static const char commit_editmsg[] = \"COMMIT_EDITMSG\";\n>\n> [...]\n>\n> So it seems that concatenating sentences indeed falls into a gray area\n> between \"avoid sentence lego\" and \"split at paragraphs\". And Peff's\n> style of splitting it saves the translators work because the first part\n> of the message is shared among two code paths.\n\nYeah, I was mainly trying to avoid repeating myself, since the first\npart of the message would be the same (and I did not want them to fall\nout of sync).\n\nHowever, I do not mind changing it if translators would prefer to see\nthe whole message as a single string.
