It appears that symlinks\nmust be preserved when doing an rsync otherwise HEAD does not point to\nthe right ref, it becomes a copy of it. If I:\n\n$ rsync -rL rsync://rsync.kernel.org/pub/scm/git/git.git/ .git\n\nThen when IS\n\n$ git-read-tree HEAD\nfatal: Not a git repository\n\nis what I get.  However, doing:\n\n$ rsync -rl ...\n\nseems to work. The only noticeable difference is that the second\ncreates HEAD as a symlink.\n\n  Documentation/core-tutorial.txt |    2 +-\n 1 files changed, 1 insertions(+), 1 deletions(-)\n\n79ac94c0b7f8e195cf07a51c393115e7d0636069\ndiff --git a/Documentation/core-tutorial.txt b/Documentation/core-tutorial.txt\nindex 4211c81..461f845 100644\n--- a/Documentation/core-tutorial.txt\n+++ b/Documentation/core-tutorial.txt\n@@ -724,7 +724,7 @@ create your own copy of the git reposito\n ----------------\n  $ mkdir my-git\n  $ cd my-git\n-$ rsync -rL rsync://rsync.kernel.org/pub/scm/git/git.git/ .git\n+$ rsync -rl rsync://rsync.kernel.org/pub/scm/git/git.git/ .git\n ----------------\n\n followed by\n--\n1.2.1\n"}]}
