The\nother event I would like to see would be a gathering of many of the\ncore Git developers in a sort of hacker summit.\n\nGitHub would like to volunteer to organize and pay for these events\nthis year. I would like to hold the developer-centric one in Berlin\nin early October (a few weeks before the Mentor Summit this time) and\nthe user one in January or February of next year.\n\nThe general idea of the developer one in October would be to get 30-40\npeople who work directly on Git core, JGit and libgit2 (or closely\nrelated projects) together to discuss core issues, new features, etc.\nGitHub can help with travel and lodging for participants who need it,\nbut attendance would be limited to people actually working on Git the\nmost. Similar to some of the earlier GitTogethers.\n\nThe user conference early next year would be held in San Francisco or\nnearby and would be a chance for people using Git to share how they're\nusing it, what they would like to see, etc. I would expect to host\nfar more people at this - closer to 100, something like the last\nGitTogether.\n\nI'm working on putting together websites for the two events for\nregistration, schedule and to gather topics that should be discussed.\nI am planning on having the talks recorded and put online as well. I\nwanted to get some general feedback from the ML about what they think\nabout this plan before I finalized everything though.\n\nFor those of you who *have* been to a GitTogether, what did you find\nuseful and/or useless about it? What did you get out of it and would\nlike to see again? For those of you who have never been, what do you\nthink would be useful? I was thinking for both of them to have a\ncombination of short prepared talks, lightning/unconference style\ntalks and general discussion / breakout sessions.\n\nFinally, is there any feedback on the times and places - especially\nthe Berlin one. Personally I'd rather see one event,\nmaybe longer than the previous occurrences to accommodate for the user\nand developer centric topics. Along this line, maybe it would be best\nto begin the event with the user-centric topics for a couple of days\nand then continue with a few more days for the core developers to\ndiscuss how to implement the features highlighted by the user\ncommunity, as well as other topics of interest for core devs. The\nusers could decide to join the rest of the event and listen-in the\ncore dev topics, or go back home.\n\nSadly, I am not a core dev. However I do appreciate the close contact\nthe GitTogether event so far gave to development concerns. From a\nuser's standpoint being exposed to that was an eye opener, something\nthat is impossible when dealing with a proprietary solution provider.\nUnder the new proposed approach I am afraid that we would start seeing\nthe beginning of a formal separation between Git users: devs vs users.\nAnd I would bet that core devs would stop showing up at the user event\nand vice-versa, and thus create that continental divide that was so\nfar absent in the Git community, which contributes to making Git so\ngreat.\n\nScott, I believe you and I discussed this at last year's GitTogether\nand we both thought the time had come for a user event. But I am not a\nfan of making two completely disconnected events the way it is\nproposed here. And as for Berlin vs Mountain View, my vote goes to\nMountain View but I'll go wherever the event is held.\n\nOn 9 August 2012 12:38, Michael J Gruber <git@drmicha.warpmail.net> wrote:\n> Michael J Gruber venit, vidit, dixit 30.07.2012 15:17:\n>> Jens Lehmann venit, vidit, dixit 29.07.2012 17:55:\n>>> Am 27.07.2012 13:45, schrieb Thomas Rast:\n>>>> Scott Chacon <schacon@gmail.com> writes:\n>>>>\n>>>>> GitHub would like to volunteer to organize and pay for these events\n>>>>> this year.
