The earlier rounds were $gmane/200165, 200387, and\n200506.\n\nCompared to the previous round, it has more patches in the clean-up\nphase. Most notably, patch 03/18 gets rid of get_sha1_with_mode_1()\nand replaces the only external caller of it with a call to a more\nstraightforward die_on_misspelt_object_name(). The test suite added\nby patch 12/18 has more patterns that we can potentially improve on.\n\nThe disambiguation logic can now be asked to pick only committish,\nwhich can be used in places like \"git commit -C deadbeef\". It also\nknows that A and B in \"git log A..B\" can only be committishes.\n\nAdding support for treeish, if anybody is tempted to do so, should\nnow be pretty straightforward.\n\nJunio C Hamano I really like the\ncleanups in the early part (reducing the number of get_sha1_* functions\nespecially), and the design of the disambiguate_state code is nice and\nclean. I didn't notice anything wrong while reading the patches\nthemselves.\n\nI do see one slight regression. If you feed an unambiguous partial sha1\nand it does not match the hint, we still select it, which is good. So\nyou still get:\n\n $ git show 000379^{commit}\n error: 000379^{commit}: expected commit type, but the object dereferences to blob type\n error: 000379^{commit}: expected commit type, but the object dereferences to blob type\n fatal: ambiguous argument '000379^{commit}': unknown revision or path not in the working tree.\n Use '--' to separate paths from revisions\n\nSo far so good (aside from the duplicated error message, but that is\nunrelated). However, if you feed a partial sha1 for which there are\nmultiple matches, none of which satisfy the disambiguation hint, then we\nused to say \"short SHA1 is ambiguous\", and now we don't.\n\n [before]\n $ git show 0003\n error: short SHA1 0003 is ambiguous.\n error: short SHA1 0003 is ambiguous.\n fatal: ambiguous argument '0003': unknown revision or path not in the working tree.\n Use '--' to separate paths from revisions\n\n $ git show 0003^{commit}\n error: short SHA1 0003 is ambiguous.\n error: short SHA1 0003 is ambiguous.\n fatal: ambiguous argument '0003^{commit}': unknown revision or path not in the working tree.\n Use '--' to separate paths from revisions\n\n [after]\n $ git show 0003\n error: short SHA1 0003 is ambiguous.\n error: short SHA1 0003 is ambiguous.\n fatal: ambiguous argument '0003': unknown revision or path not in the working tree.\n Use '--' to separate paths from revisions\n\n $ git show 0003^{commit}\n fatal: ambiguous argument '0003^{commit}': unknown revision or path not in the working tree.\n Use '--' to separate paths from revisions\n\nI think the code is right not to return an object at all (since it is\nambiguous), but it might be helpful to say \"your sha1 was ambiguous, but\nnone of the possibilities matched our criteria\" or similar. Otherwise\nthe error message looks exactly like the \"there is no such object at\nall\" case. I don't think this is a huge problem, but I can see it being\nsurprising if somebody is trying to debug an issue where they expect an\nobject to be of a different type.\n\nOther than that, the series looks good to me.\n\n-Peff\n"},{"id":"194520","messageId":"vpqsjd9nuid.fsf@bauges.imag.fr","threadId":"30938","inReplyTo":"1341268449-27801-4-git-send-email-gitster@pobox.com","subject":"Re: [PATCH v4 03/18] sha1_name.c: get rid of ugly get_sha1_with_mode_1()","fromName":"Matthieu Moy","fromEmail":"matthieu.moy@grenoble-inp.fr","sentAt":"2012-07-03T08:01:14Z","receivedAt":"2012-07-03T08:01:14Z","isPatch":true,"sender":{"key":"matthieu.moy@grenoble-inp.fr","avatar":"https://gravatar.com/avatar/72c8a2705971a25dfaff23cece15130d405685845d911aedd5667ace277f3fc5?d=mp&s=160"},"body":"Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com> writes:\n\n> +/*\n> + * Call this function when you know \"name\" given by the end user must\n> + * name an object but it doesn't; the function _may_ die with a better\n> + * diagnostic message than \"no such object 'name'\", e.g. \"Path 'doc' does not\n> + * exist in 'HEAD'\" when given \"HEAD:doc\", or it may return in which case\n> + * you have a chance to diagnose the error further.\n> + */\n> +void die_on_misspelt_object_name(const char *name, const char *prefix)\n\nIt seems unusual to have a function named die_* that is not a noreturn\nfunction. Per the comment just above your change, we are explicitly \"ok\"\nwhether or not we meet the criteria in the hint function if we have seen\nonly one. One or more of them will be\nignored (you _could_ try to establish a hierarchy, for example that\nTREEISH is a superset of COMMITISH, but that could not handle the *_only\ncases, which really are mutually exclusive). IOW, I think these are not\nreally flags but rather enum elements.\n\nIt is probably an OK trade-off since we are also stuffing true flags\nlike GET_SHA1_QUIETLY in the same field, and we don't want to make the\nparameter list too unwieldy by splitting out the enum. But it might be\nworth throwing a comment into cache.h that a certain set of the flags\nare mutually exclusive.
