We would need to follow the usual deprecation\nprocedure of:\n\n 1. introduce \"-g\", leave \"-v\" as a deprecated alias\n\n 2. wait a long time\n\n 3. drop \"-v\"\n\nIf you want to start a discussion, producing a patch for (1) is probably\nthe best way. If your plan is eventual consistency between options of\nvarious commands, an even better start would be listing the existing\nnon-verbose uses of \"-v\" and making aliases for all of them.\n\n-Peff\n"},{"id":"181884","messageId":"7vk458tuzq.fsf@alter.siamese.dyndns.org","threadId":"29272","inReplyTo":"87d3b51vr0.fsf@cante.cante.net","subject":"Re: 1.7.7.3 wishlist: add --verbose option to git-tag","fromName":"Junio C Hamano","fromEmail":"gitster@pobox.com","sentAt":"2012-01-03T20:02:33Z","receivedAt":"2012-01-03T20:02:33Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"gitster@pobox.com","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/54884?v=4"},"body":"Jari Aalto <jari.aalto@cante.net> writes:\n\n> In scripts it would be useful if \"git tag\" would provide option:\n>\n> --verbose\n>\n> As in script:\n>\n> git tag --verbose -m \"Initial import\" upstream/1.0\n\n\"In scripts\", you are expected to be capable of doing anything fancy with\n\"git cat-file tag\", but we add things that turn out to be commonly needed.\n\nWhat does the proposed \"--verbose\" produce that makes scripts easier to\nwrite (i.e. avoids repeated post-processing of \"git cat-file tag\" output),\nand how commonly would what you propose apply to various people's needs\nother than yours?\n"},{"id":"181892","messageId":"20120103202821.GB19131@cante.cante.net","threadId":"29272","inReplyTo":"7vk458tuzq.fsf@alter.siamese.dyndns.org","subject":"Re: 1.7.7.3 wishlist: add --verbose option to git-tag","fromName":"jaalto","fromEmail":"jari.aalto@cante.net","sentAt":"2012-01-03T20:28:21Z","receivedAt":"2012-01-03T20:28:21Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"jari.aalto@cante.net","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/34601?v=4"},"body":"On 2012-01-03 12:02, Junio C Hamano wrote:\n| Jari Aalto <jari.aalto@cante.net> writes:\n| \n| > In scripts it would be useful if \"git tag\" would provide option:\n| >\n| > --verbose\n| >\n| > As in script:\n| >\n| > git tag --verbose -m \"Initial import\" upstream/1.0\n| \n| What does the proposed \"--verbose\" produce that makes scripts easier to\n| write\n\nNot \"easier write\", but to display progress to user; show what is\nhapening.
