Is there a way I can access older manuals and release notes?\n\nThe HTML version of git documentation pages k.org used to serve were\nspecifically formatted to be served at that site, and sadly it is not\nlikely they will return anytime soon.\n\nThe k.org site kept these files under /pub/software/scm/git/docs/. The\nin-development \"master\" version of pages were placed directly underneath\nthat directory, and the documentation pages for older versions were kept\nin vX.Y.Z subdirectory of that directory.\n\nThe \"master\" version of the documents were formatted with a special macro\ndefined, and in that section, there were a bunch of links pointing at\nvX.Y.Z/git.html. These links _knew_ about this directory layout to have\nthe current one at the top-level with stale ones in versioned directories.\n\nI am not involved in the git-scm.com site that shows the documentation,\nbut I am guessing that it keeps an up to date copy of the preformatted\ngit-htmldocs repository and shows blob contents directly from the tip of\nthe history. The preformatted documents in git-htmldocs repository are\nmeant to be installed in machines of the end users, and do not expect that\nend users would keep a forest of documents for all versions next to each\nother. For that reason, they are not formatted with the links to older\nversions.\n\nSo if you are asking for a way to access older versions without any effort\non your part, the answer is no, there is no way to do so. At least, not\nthat I know of.\n\nIf you are willing to do some work, you can keep a forest of documentation\npages for older versions yourself, and format the latest one with the\nspecial macro defined to have the links that point to older versions. If\nyou can host that result somewhere on the net to help others, it would be\neven better. I can tell you how to drive asciidoc to enable the links to\nolder versions if you are volunteering ;-)\n"},{"id":"179598","messageId":"4EC43874.3010604@dbservice.com","threadId":"28917","inReplyTo":"7vty69pz92.fsf@alter.siamese.dyndns.org","subject":"Re: old git reference manuals & release notes","fromName":"Tomas Carnecky","fromEmail":"tom@dbservice.com","sentAt":"2011-11-16T22:25:56Z","receivedAt":"2011-11-16T22:25:56Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"tom@dbservice.com","avatar":"https://gravatar.com/avatar/900a300bdd1a8bbe086008ad78210bbee2ad2803b7d50a5cba04c1e9404bd6d2?d=mp&s=160"},"body":"On 11/12/11 8:37 AM, Junio C Hamano wrote:\n> I am not involved in the git-scm.com site that shows the documentation,\n> but I am guessing that it keeps an up to date copy of the preformatted\n> git-htmldocs repository and shows blob contents directly from the tip of\n> the history.
