I've attached a simple\nscript that fails to execute properly. I don't understand why.\n\nIn essence, I'm setting up 2 separate, bare repositories on the local\nfile system. One is intended to be a submodule, the other the umbrella\nproject. I then try to clone the umbrella project. Although I use\ncomplete, absolute file:// URLs git submodule update --init fails\nbecause .gitmodules uses a relative URL instead of the absolute URL I\nprovided initially. (Naturally, a relative URL could work too but it\nwould have to be a different one.) :-)\n\nShould I use a different syntax? Or are file:// URLs not supported for\nsubmodules? Or am I simply misunderstanding how this is supposed to\nwork?\n\nCheers,\nHilco\n"},{"id":"170602","messageId":"BANLkTinSbV4MQhM5zCDg7WtxKyBMWEqXaw@mail.gmail.com","threadId":"27716","inReplyTo":"201106272258.p5RMwOxK028539@no.baka.org","subject":"Re: Submodule URL","fromName":"Hilco Wijbenga","fromEmail":"hilco.wijbenga@gmail.com","sentAt":"2011-06-28T01:28:18Z","receivedAt":"2011-06-28T01:28:18Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"hilco.wijbenga@gmail.com","avatar":null},"body":"On 27 June 2011 15:58, Seth Robertson <in-gitvger@baka.org> wrote:\n> In message <BANLkTikyZxiW_t27Y4bXCPBjbJd_DYbOyw@mail.gmail.com>, Hilco Wijbenga writes:\n>\n>    As I was creating a script to support a question about submodules I\n>    ran into something that I don't understand. That's seems to be *exactly* what I need.\n\nHow hard is it to turn an umbrella project with content and quite a\nfew submodules (only 1 level deep) into a gitslave repo?\n\n> git-submodule is better when you do not control the subprojects or\n> more specifically wish to fix the subproject at a specific revision\n> even as the subproject changes\n>\n> However, more directly to your question, we see that using absolute\n> pathnames (not file: URLs) works.  See\n> https://git.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/GitSubmoduleTutorial\n>\n> If this works for you and file:// does not, I'd say it was a bug in\n> git.\n\nWell, it seems like a bug to me then.
