I don't completely\nagree though. In my opinion, the translations are really just fun, and\ngive the user a warm feeling- it's quite unlikely that a person\n(atleast Indian) who doesn't understand English will use Git in the\nfirst place.\n\nPersonally, I find English words written in Devanagiri script quite\nannoying: there is really no elegance or point in translating \"Could\nnot stat copy of symbolic link\" to \"सिम्बोलिक लिंक का कॉपी स्टाट नहीं कर\nसके\". A person who uses hi.po is doing it mainly for recreational\npurposes, and we'd like to give that person a beautiful and elegant\nexperience, instead of dumbly writing all the nouns in Devanagiri\nscript and inserting a few trivial filler verbs.\n\nWhile I probably took this too far with words like निर्देशिका, I'd like\nto be able to find some kind of compromise- I'll submit another\nrevision shortly using a combination of real Hindi words, English\nwords written in Devanagiri script, and English words expressed\nplainly (like \"[stat]\").\n\nI wasn't joking when I said that I don't know Hindi. I've never used\napplications that speak anything but English, and have never been\ninvolved with translation before. Thanks for poking- I'll email some\nIndians involved with translation projects hi.po and ask them for\nfeedback.\n\nThanks.\n\n-- Ram\n"},{"id":"150293","messageId":"AANLkTimQx7nNBTnOZ334=1bmuRH5x-r4XtNRU4ODbm-e@mail.gmail.com","threadId":"24990","inReplyTo":"20100907075509.GA9533@kytes","subject":"Re: [PATCH] po/hi.po: Add Hindi Translation","fromName":"Antriksh Pany","fromEmail":"antriksh.pany@gmail.com","sentAt":"2010-09-08T13:53:53Z","receivedAt":"2010-09-08T13:53:53Z","isPatch":true,"sender":{"key":"antriksh.pany@gmail.com","avatar":null},"body":"Hi Ram\n\nSome more comments (spotted a few more possible improvements) and\nresponses inline.\n\nOn Tue, Sep 7, 2010 at 1:25 PM, Ramkumar Ramachandra <artagnon@gmail.com> wrote:\n> Hi Antriksh,\n>\n> Antriksh Pany writes:\n>> Nice to see some Hindi around here ;P\n>>\n>> A few comments inline.\n>\n> Thanks for the wonderful feedback! :)\n>\n>> >  #, c-format\n>> >  msgid \"insanely long template name %s\"\n>> > -msgstr \"टेम्पलेट का नाम बहुत लंबा है: %s\"\n>> > +msgstr \"टेम्पलेट %s का नाम बहुत लंबा है\"\n>> bahut -> atyant?\n>\n> Yes, definitely. बहुत did feel out of place here.\n>\n>> >  #, c-format\n>> >  msgid \"insanely long symlink %s\"\n>> > -msgstr \"प्रतीकात्मक लिंक बहुत लंबा है: %s\"\n>> > +msgstr \"प्रतीकात्मक लिंक %s बहुत लंबा है\"\n>> Same suggestion: bahut -> atyant?\n>> Also, dropping the 'है' might be crisper and closer to the English\n>> version.\n>\n> Okay.\n>\n>> >  #, c-format\n>> >  msgid \"cannot copy '%s' to '%s'\"\n>> > -msgstr \"'%s' का नकल '%s' नहीं बना सके\"\n>> > +msgstr \"'%s' का अनुकृति '%s' में नहीं कर सके\"\n>> ka -> ki\n>\n> Ah, yes.
