Only the server assigns them due to the \nmerging issues. I also change the ref, so they read as p4notes.\n\nIt irks me, though, that they show in the gitk --all view. Can someone share with me how they use them and what the\n> cycle is?\n\nI run a cronjob that downloads mail from gmane and fetches git.git,\nthen attempts to correlate mail with commits. The results are at\n\n git://repo.or.cz/git/trast.git notes/terse notes/full\n\nI have previously posted about this at e.g.\n\n http://mid.gmane.org/200902091508.11460.trast@student.ethz.ch\n http://mid.gmane.org/201003042321.36240.trast@student.ethz.ch\n\nthough I should point out that it no longer tries to apply the patches\nas outlined in the first post; this was simply way too expensive.\n\n\nI also use it when heavily editing a patch series to tack little\nreminders on my fixup patches. I have\n\n $ git config alias.fixup\n !sh -c 'r=$1; git commit -m\"fixup! $(git log -1 --pretty=%s $r)\"' -\n\nso I usually do\n\n # hack\n git add -p\n git fixup HEAD~3\n git notes add -m 'fix foo'\n\nwhich combined with notes.rewriteRef=refs/notes/* (and\nnotes.rewriteMode left at the default of 'concatenate') means that I\nend up having a little list of reminders what changed since the last\nrevisions. I then simply clear them out before starting a new round.\n\n-- \nThomas Rast\ntrast@{inf,student}.ethz.ch\n"},{"id":"149015","messageId":"7vhbiipb5z.fsf@alter.siamese.dyndns.org","threadId":"24859","inReplyTo":"AANLkTin=VXp2BU0vhTLUy6MpJ7spXRs1dZC1wygoN6T-@mail.gmail.com","subject":"Re: Does anyone use git-notes?","fromName":"Junio C Hamano","fromEmail":"gitster@pobox.com","sentAt":"2010-08-25T22:42:00Z","receivedAt":"2010-08-25T22:42:00Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"gitster@pobox.com","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/54884?v=4"},"body":"Scott Chacon <schacon@gmail.com> writes:\n\n> I would like to write a post on how to use them, but I'm a bit\n> confused as to how people actually use them on a day to day basis. For example, with an emulator\nI'm writing I have two or three ways of using git-notes:\n1: I commit fixes and changes with a commit message describing the\nfix. Later I may find out that the fix made a couple more programs of\nthe set I have run in the emulator, so I add a note to the commit\nsaying 'This change makes X and Y work'.\n2: I add test cases to the instruction validator I wrote for the\nemulator, if the test currently fails I say so in the commit message.\nAt some later point I may commit a fix that lets the test pass, then I\ngo back to the original commit message (which said the test currently\nfailed) and add a note saying 'Fixed by [commit] nnnnnnn'.\n3: Occasionally I just use notes as a reminder. If a commit adds a new\nfeature I may later (after using the feature) add a 'todo'-note about\nwhat improvements I should add.\n\nOne use case I have thought of for the company case is to add notes to\na release commit with information that wasn't or couldn't be added at\nthe time of the commit, e.g. a list of problem reports closed by the\nrelease. But I haven't actually figured out how I can get Notes\ntransferred over a pull yet.. although I haven't tried since 1.7.0.\n\n-Tor\n"},{"id":"149055","messageId":"4C762137.1090801@drmicha.warpmail.net","threadId":"24859","inReplyTo":"AANLkTin=VXp2BU0vhTLUy6MpJ7spXRs1dZC1wygoN6T-@mail.gmail.com","subject":"Re: Does anyone use git-notes?","fromName":"Michael J Gruber","fromEmail":"git@drmicha.warpmail.net","sentAt":"2010-08-26T08:09:27Z","receivedAt":"2010-08-26T08:09:27Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"git@grubix.eu","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/233215?v=4"},"body":"Scott Chacon venit, vidit, dixit 25.08.2010 20:15:\n> I would like to write a post on how to use them, but I'm a bit\n> confused as to how people actually use them on a day to day basis.
