At least the first two seems\ndefinitely mandatory.\nOh, and AIX /bin/sh is not particularly good - it's simpler to rely on\nbash from the toolkit.\n\nDepending on your AIX and compiler versions you may need some\nadditional changes. Gary Vaughan have posted patches which include\nupdates that will improve the AIX experience. In addition to that, if\nyou have the old XlC 5.0 compiler you will probably be better off at\nthis point to use gcc from the toolkit. Otherwise you'll need those\npatches, and also one I posted which removes some C++ comments (I\nshould probably re-post that one because it's not against the latest\ngit repo version anymore).\n\nAll that been said, I build on AIX as follows, using configure (which\ntakes care of some other issues at the moment).\n\nSHELL_PATH=/opt/freeware/bin/bash\nPERL_PATH=/usr/local/special/bin/perl ./configure CC=cc\nCFLAGS=-Dinline=\"\"\nand\nmake SHELL_PATH=/opt/freeware/bin/bash PERL_PATH=/usr/local/special/bin/perl\nfollowed by the same, with 'install'\n\nThat's with the old compiler and patches applied. Without patches\nyou'll either have to rely on GCC (and remove those CC and CFLAGS\nlines, or change CC to gcc), or, with a newer (say, v10) IBM\ncompiler), the -Dinline=\"\" may not be needed.\n\nThe only problem now is that some stuff (git rebase --interactive\nIIRC) will still not work, if you're on an AIX version with Perl 5.6\n(some things in git needs 5.8). The autoconf documentation\n(autoconf.info) says:\n\n  This macro screens out various instances of `install' known not to\n  work.  It prefers to find a C program rather than a shell script,\n  for speed. [...]\n\n  Autoconf comes with a copy of `install-sh' that you can use.  If\n  you use `AC_PROG_INSTALL', you must include either `install-sh' or\n  `install.sh' in your distribution, or `configure' will produce an\n  error message saying it can't find them--even if the system you're\n  on has a good `install' program.  This check is a safety measure\n  to prevent you from accidentally leaving that file out, which\n  would prevent your package from installing on systems that don't\n  have a BSD-compatible `install' program.\n\nSo I guess we should also prefer install program for speed, even if we\ndo not use ./configure script.\n\n-- \nJakub Narębski\nPoland\n"},{"id":"143122","messageId":"AANLkTik6QJhQpy8-W0dNDLd8HPgvVFkImKl_4Dm-2phR@mail.gmail.com","threadId":"23995","inReplyTo":"201006070026.20363.jnareb@gmail.com","subject":"Re: Installing on AIX fails","fromName":"Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason","fromEmail":"avarab@gmail.com","sentAt":"2010-06-06T22:29:40Z","receivedAt":"2010-06-06T22:29:40Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"avarab@gmail.com","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/45301?v=4"},"body":"On Sun, Jun 6, 2010 at 22:26, Jakub Narebski <jnareb@gmail.com> wrote:\n> So I guess we should also prefer install program for speed, even if we\n> do not use ./configure script.\n\nIs the time it takes to run install, whether it's a shell script or C\nprogram, really an issue?\n"}]}
