At least that was the case not too long ago.\n\nIf you're running git --daemon because of its efficiency, have you\nconsidered the fact that [smart-http][] is almost as efficient? I've heard that the\nmsysgit one doesn't necessarily work, but that may have been fixed.\n\nI haven't tried using the git daemon as a service, though; I mostly\nuse it as an ad-hoc thing to easily let me exchange branches with my\nco-workers before they're ready to be pushed into the \"real\" server,\nthus it doesn't matter much if git-daemon doesn't restart on boot.  So\nI can't help with the original poster's problem.\n\n> If you're running git --daemon because of its efficiency, have you\n> considered the fact that [smart-http][] is almost as efficient?  That\n> should work in any http server, a plethora of which exist for Windoze.\n\nThat's about 10000 times harder than running 'git daemon' from the\ncommand line, though, if all you want is ad-hoc sharing.\n\nYour suggestion is probably a good one for setting up a \"real\" Windows\ngit server; setting up a Windows ssh server should also work.  We just\nuse a Linux server at work, even for our Windows users, and life is\nfine.\n\n> Also, file system cloning is very efficient so if you're trying to\n> share a repository you could in theory share over the file system\n> using filesystem permissions to allow for cloning.\n\nHmm, in my experience, git cloning over NFS/SMB is kind of crappy;\nusing a real git server is much faster.  This is because of latency:\nthe client doesn't know which bytes to read until it reads some of the\nother bytes, so there's a lot of back-and-forth communication.  The\n\"real\" git protocols (like git daemon, smart http, ssh server, etc)\nlet the server make these decisions and can thus go much faster.\n\nHave fun,\n\nAvery\n"},{"id":"140670","messageId":"r2s2cfc40321004302117h1e9f4068z442b7018dd640abf@mail.gmail.com","threadId":"23643","inReplyTo":"1272532026043-4979038.post@n2.nabble.com","subject":"Re: git daemon on Windows environment","fromName":"Jon Seymour","fromEmail":"jon.seymour@gmail.com","sentAt":"2010-05-01T04:17:24Z","receivedAt":"2010-05-01T04:17:24Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"jon.seymour@gmail.com","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/207131?v=4"},"body":"On Thu, Apr 29, 2010 at 7:07 PM, santos2010\n<santos.claudia2009@googlemail.com> wrote:\n>\n> Hello,\n>\n> I tried to install git daemon on a Windows Server 2003 using cygrunsrv, but\n> got this error:\n> cygrunsrv: Error starting a service: QueryServiceStatus:  Win32 error 1062:\n>\n> I googled and found a possible fix:\n>\n>  \" explicitly add Full Control for the SYSTEM user to\n>\n>  C:\\Cygwin\n>  C:\\Cygwin\\var\n>  C:\\Cygwin\\var\\log \"\n>\n> However this didn't help as well.\n> Anyone has experience with this installation? Any tips?\n\nI run git-daemon as a Windows service under cygrunsrv and it works\npretty well for me.\n\nI'd double check that you can launch git daemon with the arguments you\nhave registered with cygrunsrv (use cygrunsrv -LV to see these).\n\nAlso, check any output that might be in /var/log/git-daemon.log. Make\nsure, of course, that you don't have another copy of git-daemon\nrunning when you start the Windows service.\n\njon.\n"}]}
