Linus Torvalds at OSDL and Linus Torvalds at L-F may\nbe one same person, and the person who is summarizing may want to\ncoallesce his commmits like this, even under \"-e\" option:\n\n Linus Torvalds <torvalds@evo.osdl.org>,<torvalds@g5.osdl.org>,<torvalds@linux-foundation.org> (1093):\n Initial revision of \"git\", the information manager from hell\n Add copyright notices.\n ... (many more commits) ...\n\nwhile there may be more than one John Smiths that we can differenciate only\nby email and they get their own separate group as different people (each\nof them may have more than one email addresses).\n\nIf a grouping of set of name-mail pairs per individual is kept somewhere,\nthat can be used to enhance shortlog to support such a use case [*1*].\nAnd the UUID thing could be one possible implementation (you make\nname-mail pair to first map to some third identifier, and treat name-mail\npairs that map to the same identifier as \"one person\"). But I don't think\nit would work well if you forced the maintenance burden of such a mapping\nto individuals.\n\n\n[Footnote]\n\n*1* unless there is a situation where one person (say \"Junio C Hamano\")\nstopped using one e-mail address (say \"junkio@cox.net\") s/he has been\nusing, and then a different person with the same name came and started\nusing the same address, that is.\n"},{"id":"137473","messageId":"9e4733911003211251q24b6d799j92729ee29102351a@mail.gmail.com","threadId":"23079","inReplyTo":"cd13e44f33c1f6bc9ec11903c3041199c9c464ee.1268996321.git.git@drmicha.warpmail.net","subject":"Re: [PATCH] .mailmap: Entries for Alex Bennée, Deskin Miller, Vitaly \"_Vi\" Shukela","fromName":"Jon Smirl","fromEmail":"jonsmirl@gmail.com","sentAt":"2010-03-21T19:51:55Z","receivedAt":"2010-03-21T19:51:55Z","isPatch":true,"sender":{"key":"jonsmirl@gmail.com","avatar":"https://gravatar.com/avatar/cff3bf5bfdfa6708b905712ff91f0f9b8aaca161659f38c02b787920d5d28b7e?d=mp&s=160"},"body":"On Fri, Mar 19, 2010 at 7:02 AM, Michael J Gruber\n<git@drmicha.warpmail.net> wrote:\n> With the current .mailmap, git shortlog shows the following for these:\n>\n>    11  Deskin Miller\n>     3  Vitaly \\\"_Vi\\\" Shukela\n>     1  Alex Bennee\n>     1  Alex Bennée\n>     1  Deskin Miler\n>     1  Vitaly _Vi Shukela\n\nWhich tool is introducing the charset errors?\n\nIs there an easy way to add a check indicating a new name/email pair\nand asking if it is correct?\n\n-- \nJon Smirl\njonsmirl@gmail.com\n"},{"id":"137487","messageId":"b2cdc9f31003211549y7fc17101j2894a58e6464d3dd@mail.gmail.com","threadId":"23079","inReplyTo":"alpine.LFD.2.00.1003201405100.31128@xanadu.home","subject":"Re: [PATCH] .mailmap: Entries for Alex Bennée, Deskin Miller, Vitaly \"_Vi\" Shukela","fromName":"Alex Bennee","fromEmail":"kernel-hacker@bennee.com","sentAt":"2010-03-21T22:49:35Z","receivedAt":"2010-03-21T22:49:35Z","isPatch":true,"sender":{"key":"kernel-hacker@bennee.com","avatar":null},"body":"On 20 March 2010 18:10, Nicolas Pitre <nico@fluxnic.net> wrote:\n> On Sat, 20 Mar 2010, Junio C Hamano wrote:\n>\n>> Michael J Gruber <git@drmicha.warpmail.net> writes:\n>>\n>> > With the current .mailmap, git shortlog shows the following for these:\n>> Thanks for doing the gruntwork; very much appreciated.\n>>\n>> I'll backburner this and wait until the people who are described by these\n>> entries say they want these entries in the .mailmap file.\n\nI'm happy to have my name properly matched.
