This is found\nin patch 6 for transport.c::transport_set_verbosity().\n\nAs a guide, I used Jeff's message (gmane#121065). The rules used are as\nfollows (processing aborts when a rule is satisfied):\n\n  1. Report progress, if force_progress is 1 (ie. --progress).\n  2. Don't report progress, if verbosity < 0 (ie. -q/--quiet).\n  3. Report progress if isatty(2) is 1.\n\nThis changes the current implementation such that if both --progress\nand --quiet are specified, progress is reported. I don't think this is\na very significant change, but I think it makes sense, since I expect\n--progress to be mostly used by script writers or IDE integrators (to\nforce progress reporting even if stderr is not a terminal).\n\nContents:\n\n[PATCH 01/10] Documentation/git-pull.txt: mention --quiet and --verbose for fetching\n[PATCH 02/10] Documentation/git-push.txt: put --quiet before verbosity\n[PATCH 06/10] transport->progress: use flag authoritatively\n[PATCH 07/10] push: learn --progress\n[PATCH 08/10] fetch: learn --progress\n[PATCH 09/10] pull: learn --progress\n[PATCH 10/10] Report progress if isatty(2) is 1.\n\nThis changes progress reporting behaviour such that if both --progress\nand --quiet are specified, progress is reported.\n\nIn two areas, the logic to determine whether to *not* show progress is\nchanged to simply use the negation of transport->progress. This changes\nbehaviour in some ways (see previous paragraph for details).\n\nSigned-off-by: Tay Ray Chuan <rctay89@gmail.com>\n---\n builtin-clone.c    |    5 +----\n builtin-fetch.c    |    2 +-\n builtin-push.c     |    2 +-\n transport-helper.c |    3 +--\n transport.c        |   17 +++++++++++++++--\n transport.h        |   10 ++++++++--\n 6 files changed, 27 insertions(+), 12 deletions(-)\n\ndiff --git a/builtin-clone.c b/builtin-clone.c\nindex 959fe4b..05f8fb4 100644\n--- a/builtin-clone.c\n+++ b/builtin-clone.c\n@@ -525,10 +525,7 @@ int cmd_clone(int argc, const char **argv, const char *prefix)\n \t\t\ttransport_set_option(transport, TRANS_OPT_DEPTH,\n \t\t\t\t\t     option_depth);\n \n-\t\ttransport_set_verbosity(transport, option_verbosity);\n-\n-\t\tif (option_progress)\n-\t\t\ttransport->progress = 1;\n+\t\ttransport_set_verbosity(transport, option_verbosity, option_progress);\n \n \t\tif (option_upload_pack)\n \t\t\ttransport_set_option(transport, TRANS_OPT_UPLOADPACK,\ndiff --git a/builtin-fetch.c b/builtin-fetch.c\nindex d23ea2a..6b96b41 100644\n--- a/builtin-fetch.c\n+++ b/builtin-fetch.c\n@@ -823,7 +823,7 @@ static int fetch_one(struct remote *remote, int argc, const char **argv)\n \t\tdie(\"Where do you want to fetch from today?\");\n \n \ttransport = transport_get(remote, NULL);\n-\ttransport_set_verbosity(transport, verbosity);\n+\ttransport_set_verbosity(transport, verbosity, 0);\n \tif (upload_pack)\n \t\tset_option(TRANS_OPT_UPLOADPACK, upload_pack);\n \tif (keep)\ndiff --git a/builtin-push.c b/builtin-push.c\nindex 0082dad..dce3152 100644\n--- a/builtin-push.c\n+++ b/builtin-push.c\n@@ -107,7 +107,7 @@ static int push_with_options(struct transport *transport, int flags)\n \tint err;\n \tint nonfastforward;\n \n-\ttransport_set_verbosity(transport, verbosity);\n+\ttransport_set_verbosity(transport, verbosity, 0);\n \n \tif (receivepack)\n \t\ttransport_set_option(transport,\ndiff --git a/transport-helper.c b/transport-helper.c\nindex 3d33697..3e69ebd 100644\n--- a/transport-helper.c\n+++ b/transport-helper.c\n@@ -279,9 +279,8 @@ static void standard_options(struct transport *t)\n \tchar buf[16];\n \tint n;\n \tint v = t->verbose;\n-\tint no_progress = v < 0 || (!t->progress && !isatty(2));\n \n-\tset_helper_option(t, \"progress\", !no_progress ? \"true\" : \"false\");\n+\tset_helper_option(t, \"progress\", t->progress ? \"true\" : \"false\");\n \n \tn = snprintf(buf, sizeof(buf), \"%d\", v + 1);\n \tif (n >= sizeof(buf))\ndiff --git a/transport.c b/transport.c\nindex 0655f65..e2cfabd 100644\n--- a/transport.c\n+++ b/transport.c\n@@ -526,7 +526,7 @@ static int fetch_refs_via_pack(struct transport *transport,\n \targs.include_tag = data->options.followtags;\n \targs.verbose = (transport->verbose > 0);\n \targs.quiet = (transport->verbose < 0);\n-\targs.no_progress = args.quiet || (!transport->progress && !isatty(2));\n+\targs.no_progress = !transport->progress;\n \targs.depth = data->options.depth;\n \n \tfor (i = 0; i < nr_heads; i++)\n@@ -915,6 +915,8 @@ struct transport *transport_get(struct remote *remote, const char *url)\n \tconst char *helper;\n \tstruct transport *ret = xcalloc(1, sizeof(*ret));\n \n+\tret->progress = isatty(2);\n+\n \tif (!remote)\n \t\tdie(\"No remote provided to transport_get()\");\n \n@@ -1013,12 +1015,23 @@ int transport_set_option(struct transport *transport,\n \treturn 1;\n }\n \n-void transport_set_verbosity(struct transport *transport, int verbosity)\n+void transport_set_verbosity(struct transport *transport, int verbosity,\n+\tint force_progress)\n {\n \tif (verbosity >= 2)\n \t\ttransport->verbose = verbosity <= 3 ? verbosity : 3;\n \tif (verbosity < 0)\n \t\ttransport->verbose = -1;\n+\n+\t/**\n+\t * Rules used to determine whether to report progress (processing aborts\n+\t * when a rule is satisfied):\n+\t *\n+\t *   1. A reader will start scanning\nthe OPTIONS section, finds -q (or -v) and notices it is listed in the\n\"related to merging\" subsection, and would stop there.
