I\ncreated a bare git repo on a server and pushed a local git repo (let's\ncall it DIR1) from my PC to the server.  Then from another directory\non my local PC (let's call it DIR2), I cloned the repo on the server\nand checked out a new branch named testBranch.  Did some playing with\nbranches to see how they worked, like pushing the branch to the server\nfrom DIR2 and fetching it from DIR1, merging it into master and then\npushing master back to the server.  Now from DIR2, I fetched master\nfrom the server, merged in the changes and deleted the remote branch\ncalled testBranch using the command \"git push origin :testBranch\"\nwhich seemed to work fine since the command \"git branch -r\" no longer\nlists the remote branch.  However from DIR1 if I do \"git branch -r\" I\nstill see the remote branch and can't seem to delete it using the\nabove method.  Any idea why this is happening?\n\nThanks in advance.\n\nPatrick\n"},{"id":"129579","messageId":"m27hsxazoi.fsf@igel.home","threadId":"21910","inReplyTo":"9cdb17250912081235m2b061ca5x70fe42749b49670f@mail.gmail.com","subject":"Re: delete remote branches","fromName":"Andreas Schwab","fromEmail":"schwab@linux-m68k.org","sentAt":"2009-12-08T22:06:21Z","receivedAt":"2009-12-08T22:06:21Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"schwab@linux-m68k.org","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/2175493?v=4"},"body":"Patrick Grimard <pgrimard@gmail.com> writes:\n\n> However from DIR1 if I do \"git branch -r\" I still see the remote\n> branch and can't seem to delete it using the above method.\n\nTry \"git remote prune origin\".\n\nAndreas.\n\n-- \nAndreas Schwab, schwab@linux-m68k.org\nGPG Key fingerprint = 58CA 54C7 6D53 942B 1756  01D3 44D5 214B 8276 4ED5\n\"And now for something completely different.\"\n"}]}
