There was no breakage in behaviour per-se, but this\n was unnecessary.\n\n * \"git prune-packed\" gave progress output even when its standard error is\n not connected to a terminal; this caused cron jobs that run it to\n produce crufts.\n\n * \"git pack-objects --all-progress\" is an option to ask progress output\n from write-object phase _if_ progress output were to be produced, and\n shouldn't have forced the progress output.\n\n * \"git apply -p<n> --directory=<elsewhere>\" did not work well for a\n non-default value of n.\n\n * \"git merge foo HEAD\" was misparsed as an old-style invocation of the\n command and produced a confusing error message. As it does not specify\n any other branch to merge, it shouldn't be mistaken as such. We will\n remove the old style \"git merge <message> HEAD <commit>...\" syntax in\n future versions, but not in this release,\n\n * \"git merge -m <message> <branch>...\" added the standard merge message\n on its own after user-supplied message, which should have overrided the\n standard one.\n\nOther minor documentation updates are included.\n\n----------------------------------------------------------------\n\nChanges since v1.6.5.3 are as follows:\n\nDavid Aguilar (1):\n help: Do not unnecessarily look for a repository\n\nDavid Soria Parra (1):\n Documentation: Document --branch option in git clone synopsis\n\nGreg Price (1):\n Documentation: undocument gc'd function graph_release()\n\nJeff King (1):\n prune-packed: only show progress when stderr is a tty\n\nJunio C Hamano (7):\n builtin-apply.c: pay attention to -p<n> when determining the name\n Do not misidentify \"git merge foo HEAD\" as an old-style invocation\n merge: do not add standard message when message is given with -m option\n Prepare for 1.6.5.4\n Documentation/Makefile: allow man.base.url.for.relative.link to be set from Make\n Unconditionally set man.base.url.for.relative.links\n Git 1.6.5.4\n\nMichael J Gruber (1):\n Documentation: Fix a few i.e./e.g. mix-ups\n\nNicolas Pitre (1):\n pack-objects: split implications of --all-progress from progress activation\n\nStephen Boyd (1):\n instaweb: restart server if already running\n"},{"id":"129111","messageId":"20091203092521.GA3620@coredump.intra.peff.net","threadId":"21839","inReplyTo":"7v638o76ra.fsf@alter.siamese.dyndns.org","subject":"Re: [ANNOUNCE] Git 1.6.5.4","fromName":"Jeff King","fromEmail":"peff@peff.net","sentAt":"2009-12-03T09:25:21Z","receivedAt":"2009-12-03T09:25:21Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"peff@peff.net","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/45925?v=4"},"body":"On Thu, Dec 03, 2009 at 01:21:13AM -0800, Junio C Hamano wrote:\n\n> * \"git pack-objects --all-progress\" is an option to ask progress output\n> from write-object phase _if_ progress output were to be produced, and\n> shouldn't have forced the progress output.\n\nShouldn't this actually be --all-progress-implied? Earlier we added\nthe MAN_BASE_URL make variable to specify the value for it.\n\nWhen MAN_BASE_URL is not given, it ought to be safe to set the\nparameter to empty; it would result in an empty leading path for\nolder stylesheets that ignore the parameter, and newer ones\nwould produce the same \"relative URL\" without the message.\n\nUnfortunately, older xmlto (at least version 0.0.18 released in\nearly 2004 that comes with RHEL/CentOS 5) does not understand\nthe --stringparam command line option, so we cannot add the\nparameter definition unconditionally to the command line. Work\nit around by passing the parameter only when set.\n\nIf you do not have a suitable URL prefix, you can pass a quoted empty\nstring to it, like so:\n\n $ make MAN_BASE_URL='\"\"'\n\nSigned-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>\n---\n Documentation/Makefile | 7 +++++++\n 1 files changed, 7 insertions(+), 0 deletions(-)\n\ndiff --git a/Documentation/Makefile b/Documentation/Makefile\nindex d4c05ca..1c9dfce 100644\n--- a/Documentation/Makefile\n+++ b/Documentation/Makefile\n@@ -108,7 +108,14 @@ endif\n # use MAN_BASE_URL=http://www.kernel.org/pub/software/scm/git/docs/\n # but distros may want to set it to /usr/share/doc/git-core/docs/ or\n # something like that.\n+#\n+# As older stylesheets simply ignore this parameter, it ought to be\n+# safe to set it to empty string when the base URL is not specified,\n+# but unfortunately we cannot do so unconditionally because at least\n+# xmlto 0.0.18 is reported to lack --stringparam option.\n+ifdef MAN_BASE_URL\n XMLTO_EXTRA += --stringparam man.base.url.for.relative.links=$(MAN_BASE_URL)\n+endif\n \n # If your target system uses GNU groff, it may try to render\n # apostrophes as a \"pretty\" apostrophe using unicode. I tested it with 1.6.5.4 on Fedora 10,\n12 and CentOS 5.4 but it could surely use more eyes and testing to\nensure it works as it should and doesn't have unintended negative\neffects on make clean and such.\n\nThis does set MAN_BASE_URL unconditionally, pointing to kernel.org.\nThat way anyone building with recent DocBook and taking no new action\nwill have something useful in the man page links.\n\nI noticed on Fedora 12 that email addresses get added to the NOTES\nsection. For example, git-branch(1) has:\n\nDocumentation by Junio C Hamano and the git-list <git@vger.kernel.org[4]>.\n...\nNOTES\n...\n4. git@vger.kernel.org\n mailto:git@vger.kernel.org\n\nThat must be something new in DocBook, as it doesn't occur in the\nFedora 10 builds.
