I understand that recent \nSubversion versions have added some information about merges but I don't \nthink git-svn handles this (I don't even know if it makes sense or not:).\n\nIf you have a single integrator you'll also loose the author name. Keep \nin mind also that git-svn is slower to get new commits from the upstream \nrepository.\n\nI've used git-svn for a while now without any trouble. And I can say \nthat I won't move back to using an svn client.\n\nPascal.\n\n-- \n\n--|------------------------------------------------------\n--| Pascal Obry                           Team-Ada Member\n--| 45, rue Gabriel Peri - 78114 Magny Les Hameaux FRANCE\n--|------------------------------------------------------\n--|    http://www.obry.net  -  http://v2p.fr.eu.org\n--| \"The best way to travel is by means of imagination\"\n--|\n--| gpg --keyserver keys.gnupg.net --recv-key F949BD3B\n"},{"id":"125610","messageId":"20091021160558.GA19389@dpotapov.dyndns.org","threadId":"21308","inReplyTo":"4ADF2666.1070908@obry.net","subject":"Re: drawbacks to svn server + git-svn vs git server?","fromName":"Dmitry Potapov","fromEmail":"dpotapov@gmail.com","sentAt":"2009-10-21T16:05:58Z","receivedAt":"2009-10-21T16:05:58Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"dpotapov@gmail.com","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/6568595?v=4"},"body":"On Wed, Oct 21, 2009 at 05:19:02PM +0200, Pascal Obry wrote:\n> Le 21/10/2009 17:05, Dexter Riley a écrit :\n>> Hello. So, it is more like cherry-pick with some automatic\ntracking than git merge, and stored separately for each file in the repo.\nSo, I do not think it is easy to map svn merge concept to git one...\n\nInability to do merges mean that you have to track what changes what\nbranch by hands, which is very inconvenient if you have a few long\nliving branches.\n\nAnother long standing issue with git-svn was automatic end-of-line\nconversion. It did not work with git-svn and the last time I heard about\nit, it was disabled for repository created by git-svn. Probably, it may\nnot difficult to correct, but no one has looked at that closely....\n\n> If you have a single integrator you'll also loose the author name.\n\nRight... And if everyone has the right to commit then git-svn will\nautomatically rebase your changes during 'dcommit' on top of changes\nmade by other people, which means that you put into the repository a\ndifferent state than one you have actually tested.\n\n\nDmitry\n"},{"id":"126127","messageId":"26093326.post@talk.nabble.com","threadId":"21308","inReplyTo":"25994334.post@talk.nabble.com","subject":"Re: drawbacks to svn server + git-svn vs git server?","fromName":"Tim Mazid","fromEmail":"timmazid@hotmail.com","sentAt":"2009-10-28T11:53:15Z","receivedAt":"2009-10-28T11:53:15Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"timmazid@hotmail.com","avatar":null},"body":"\nHi,\n\nI recently migrated from svn to git as well, but I've abandoned the svn\nserver altogether.\nWhat I noticed is that the merges do not show up properly when you look at\nthe svn repo with git. Obviously because svn doesn't track that information.\nI assume that such a problem would continue if you continued using the svn\nserver.\nPersonally, i would recommend migrating to git altogether, it isn't actually\nthat difficult. The only issue I had was fixing up the merges.\nSorry I can't be of more help, I'm just letting you know what issues I faced\nwith svn.\n\nGood luck,\nTim.\n\n\nDexter Riley wrote:\n> \n> Hello. My question is, are\n> there any major disadvantages to using git-svn versus git?\n\nOne rather big drawback is that \"git svn dcommit\" has to do some\nhistory-rewritting. In other words, if you have a local commit A in\nyour repository, and send it to the SVN server with \"git svn dcommit\",\nthen A is rewritten into A' (same tree content, but different commit\nmessage at least, and maybe other details I'm not aware of). If you\nuse git-svn as a \"better SVN client\", it's not a problem, but if you\nwant to really use the Git part of git-svn, then this history\nrewritting will break the local branches that reference your A.\n\n-- \nMatthieu Moy\nhttp://www-verimag.imag.fr/~moy/\n"}]}
