In 2009 first three days bring 564+126+134 = 824\nresponses, but one should take into account the fact that announcement\nmechanism was slightly different, and that announcement on GitHub was\ndelayed. See also analysis of completion rate graph below, and its\ncorrelation with the dates of announcing it in different places.\n\n(Side note: perhaps it would be better to run Git User's Survey in\ndifferent term, and not in summer in the middle of holidays?).\n\nThere are three spikes on Completion Rate Graph - July 2009 ('Monthly'\nview):\n Jul 15 | 564 respondents / day\n Jul 21 | 696 respondents / day\n Jul 27 | 152 respondents / day\n(note that there is/was bug in Survs.com that made dates in 'Monthly'\nview to be off by 1 day). See below for analysis.\n\n Total respondents: 2424\n First response: Jul 15, 2009\n Last response: Jul 31, 2009\n Open during: 24 days\n Average time: 36 minutes\n\nThere were 12 responses in the channel that required no cookies, and\nwas totally anonymous, at the cost of not being able to go back to\none's responses to correct or complete it.\n\nThis survey was announced at the following blogs (note that dates\nbelow for blog posts are in local timezone of blog, while Survs.com\ndates are in survey admin timezone, currently GMT+01:00):\n July 14 | http://gitster.livejournal.com/36139.html\n July 15 | http://blogs.gnome.org/newren/2009/07/15/git-users-survey-2009\n July 15 | http://gitlog.wordpress.com/2009/07/15/git-users-survey-2009\n July 17 | http://blog.gitorious.org/2009/07/17/the-git-users-survey\n July 20* | http://github.com/blog/460-git-user-s-survey-2009\n\nAnd also on the following blogs I have just found via blogsearch:\n July 17 | http://marilyn.frields.org:8080/~paul/wordpress/?p=2632\n July 17 | http://markelikalderon.com/blog/2009/07/17/git-users-survey-2009/\n July 27* | http://blog.hartwork.org/?p=451\n\nIf you know of any blogs which posted announcement about the survey,\nbut are not listed here, feel free to drop information about them\n(with link).\n\nAs you can see the announcement on GitHub Blog (and via Twitter:\nhttp://twitter.com/github/status/2746745923) correlate with the second\nspike in responses, when we take difference in timezone into account.\n\nIt looks like the announcement on Hartwork Blog, part of Planet\nGentoo, was responsible for small spike in responses at 27 July.\nBut it might have been cased by announcement arriving via other\nchannel, see the table below.\n\nThe announcement was posted (with slight delay) on git homepage\n(http://git-scm.com), and is present on \"git ready\" site with git tips\n(http://www.gitready.com). \n\nThe following git hosting sites have announced the survey:\n * repo.or.cz\n * git.kernel.org\n * GitHub (via blog)\n * Gitorious (via blog)\n\nThe following git hosting sites promised to announce the survey:\n * Assembla\n * Unfuddle\n * Codebase\n * InDefero\n\nThe announcement was added on http://wiki.debian.org/DeveloperNews\nwiki page, where it would be relayed to debian-devel-announce mailing\nlist (hopefully before survey ends ;-)).\n\nI have sent request for Git User's Survey 2009 announcement also to\nOhloh (software metric site), Perlbuzz (blog and Twitter) and LWN\n(Linux Weekly News), currently without response or results.\n\nWhere should we send request for announcing Git User's Survey 2009?\n\n----\nBelow there is analysis of single question from this survey;\nthe question which is related to announcing survey (and participation).\n\n29) How did you hear about this Git User's Survey? \n (Choice - Single answer)\n\n===============================================================\nSource | resp [%] | resp [n]\n---------------------------------------------------------------\nblog (or blog planet) | 29% | 653\nTwitter or other microblogging platform | 14% | 310\ngit hosting site[1] | 14% | 308\ngit mailing list | 10% | 221\ngit homepage[2] | 5% | 117\nmailing list or forum of some project[3] | 4% | 89\nnews web site or social news site[4] | 4% | 87\nsoftware-related web site[5] | 3% | 74\nannouncement on IRC channel | 2% | 39\ngit wiki | 2% | 38\ngit-related mailing list[6] | 2% | 34\n#git IRC channel topic[7] | 1% | 21\nother kind of web site | 1% | 20\n.........................................|..........|..........\nother - please specify | 11% | 244\n-----------------------------------------+---------------------\nTotal respondents | 2255\nRespondents who skipped this question | 169\n===============================================================\n\nResults are sorted in descending order of number of responses. \n\nAs you can see most popular channel was blog or blog planet. Next\nare, with nearly the same number of votes (responses) are:\nmicroblogging platform such as Twitter, Plurk, Jaiku, identi.ca or\nPownce, and announcement on git hosting site (note that some git\nhosting site post announcement/news via blogs). Third in turn was git\nmailing list.\n\nNote that this year I didn't \"spam\" mailing lists for projects which\nuse Git with announcement about Git User's Survey; nevertheless\nannouncement on project mailing list or forum is in the middle\n(median) of announcement channels.\n\nThe free-form answer \"other (please specify)\" haven't been yet\nanalysed, but among others there are replies of 'reddit' and\n'ycombinator' (which belongs IMHO in \"news web site or social news\nsite\" category), 'blog'/'planet xxx' (which belong to \"blog (or blog\nplanet)\" category), differently phrased 'word of mouth' / 'colleague'\ncategory, 'instant messaging', [forwarded] [personal] email or\ncorporate mailing list or wiki, gitready (which I forgot to put as\npossible option in the list), GitHub (which belong either to \"blog\" or\n\"git hosting site\" category... although as one of responder states\n\"github, it is more than git hosting site\" ;-)).\n\nFootnotes:\n----------\n[1] sites such as git.kernel.org, repo.or.cz, GitHub, Gitorious;\n note that some git hosting sites use blogs to announce news\n[2] some responders have chosen this option _before_ there was\n announcement posted on Git Homepage (http://git-scm.com) :-)\n[3] this time I didn't send announcement to mailing list of (some)\n of projects using Git, with the sole exception of LKML (Linux)\n[4] sites such as Digg, Reddit, Hacker News (YCombinator), etc.\n[5] sites such as Ohloh or Freshmeat\n[6] \"Git for Human Beings\" Google Group, msysGit mailing list,\n GitHub Google Group, Gitorious Google Group.\n[7] other IRC channels like #github and #gitorious also put \n announcement in the channel topic (channel description)\n\n-- \nJakub Narebski\nGit User's Survey 2009: http://tinyurl.com/GitSurvey2009\n"},{"id":"119310","messageId":"94a0d4530907311700m1014c8e6k884eabd198ac1b77@mail.gmail.com","threadId":"20323","inReplyTo":"200907312246.12134.jnareb@gmail.com","subject":"Re: Git User's Survey 2009 partial summary, part 1 - announcing survey, participation","fromName":"Felipe Contreras","fromEmail":"felipe.contreras@gmail.com","sentAt":"2009-08-01T00:00:16Z","receivedAt":"2009-08-01T00:00:16Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"felipe.contreras@gmail.com","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/8358?v=4"},"body":"2009/7/31 Jakub Narebski <jnareb@gmail.com>:\n> It was half a month since Git User's Survey 2009 was started (it was\n> started on 15 July 2009), a quarter of duration time of the survey.\n>\n> So I think this is time for partial summary of Git User's Survey 2009.\n\nCool :)\n\n</snip>\n\n> As you can see most popular channel was blog or blog planet.\n\nNot a surprise for me.
