The .git/svn  \ndirectory is the largest directory, taking up about twice as much  \nspace as the .git/objects directory.\n\nMost of the space is taken up by index files under .git/svn under .git/ \nsvn/tag or .git/svn/<branch name> directories in the subversion tree.\n\nThe repository uses the normal Subversion layout (trunk/tags/branches)  \nand was setup with git svn init -s.  There are a lot of tags in the  \nrepository - about one per day for the past several years.\n\nWhat are the index files under .git/svn used for?  Am I doing anything  \nwrong?  Can the index files under .git/svn be safely removed?  My  \nbrief look at git-svn.perl makes me think that they are temporary, but  \nI'm not sure.\n\nThanks,\nRobert\n"},{"id":"118240","messageId":"eaa105840907181110q416a9dd0j989a63eedd9b15ca@mail.gmail.com","threadId":"20153","inReplyTo":"CFF1FF99-9237-4C89-BB2D-66F82CF683B1@gmail.com","subject":"Re: git svn .git/svn/*/index files taking up huge amounts of disk space","fromName":"Peter Harris","fromEmail":"git@peter.is-a-geek.org","sentAt":"2009-07-18T18:10:17Z","receivedAt":"2009-07-18T18:10:17Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"git@peter.is-a-geek.org","avatar":null},"body":"On Sat, Jul 18, 2009 at 10:58 AM, Robert Zeh wrote:\n> What are the index files under .git/svn used for?  Am I doing anything\n> wrong?  Can the index files under .git/svn be safely removed?  My brief look\n> at git-svn.perl makes me think that they are temporary, but I'm not sure.\n\nThe index files are used to keep track of the commits that came from\nsvn, so that git-svn rebase knows where to start from (either when\ncommitting or when doing a fetch from svn).\n\nUnless you used the --no-metadata switch, the files under .git/svn can\nbe safely removed (at the cost of performance when operating a branch\nthat has had its index removed).\n\nPeter Harris\n"}]}
