I would probably use Survs.com, like last year.\n\nComments appreciated!\n\n------------------------------------------------------------------\nGit User's Survey 2009: proposed questions\n\nQuestions marked with star (e.g. 11.*) are questions which I am not\nsure if they should be in this survey.\n\nAbout you:\n^^^^^^^^^^\n01. What country do you live in?\n (free-form question, or drop-down list of countries (select))\n02. How old are you (in years)?\n (free-form / text entry, or age range: single choice)\n\nI am ambiguous if to count questions in this section against the\nnumber of commits in this survey, which we probably would want to have\nno more (or at least not much more) than 20. I wonder also if\nSurvs.com would support Geo-IP (finding location based on IP address)\nat the time of survey...\n\nI have removed \"With which programming languages are you proficient?\"\nfrom this section, unless there are some arguments for keeping it.\n\n\nGetting started with Git\n^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^\n03. Did you find Git easy to learn?\n (single choice: very hard/hard/reasonably easy/easy/very easy)\n04. Did you find Git easy to use? [NEW!]\n (single choice: very hard/hard/reasonably easy/easy/very easy)\n05. Which Git version(s) are you using?\n (multiple choice: pre 1.3, 1.3.x, 1.4.x, 1.5.x, 1.6.x, 'master',\n 'next', other - please explain)\n06. Rate your own proficiency with Git:\n (single choice: novice/casual, needs advice/everyday use/\n /can offer advice/very well)\n\nI have removed (perhaps a bit difficult to answer correctly) question\n\"How long do you use Git?\"; mainly to limit number of questions in\nsurvey. I have also removed all the free form questions (what helped\nyou most in learning, what did you find hardest), as free-form\nquestions are hard to analyse.\n\nShould we remove some of above questions? Should we keep some of\nremoved free-form questions?\n\n[The whole section about \"Other SCMs\" was removed]\n\nHow do you use Git?\n^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^\n07. I use Git for (check all that apply):\n (multiple choice: work projects, unpaid projects; \n proprietary code, OSS development, private (unpublished) code; \n code, personal data, documents, static website, web app;\n sharing data or sync, backup, wiki/blog/other web app backend,\n managing configuration files, frontend to other SCM;\n other - please specify)\n08. How do you obtain Git?\n (multiple choice: binary package, source tarball, \n source package or script[*], pull from main repository)\n [*] so git is installed in a system of packages\n09. What operating system do you use Git on?\n (multiple choice: Linux, MacOS X, MS Windows/msysGit, \n MS Windows/Cygwin, *BSD, other Unix, other - please specify)\n10.*What editor, IDE or RAD you use working with Git?\n (either free-form, or multiple choice: Eclipse, NetBeans,\n IntelliJ IDEA, MS Visual Studio, KDevelop, Anjuta, XCode,\n Emacs and XEmacs, Vim, Notepad++, TextMate, gedit, Geany,\n Kate, 'E', SciTE, other - please specify).\n11.*Which porcelains / interfaces / implementations do you use?\n (multiple choice: git (core), JGit, Cogito, pg, StGIT, Guilt,\n Easy Git, Pyrite, TopGit, other - please specify)\n12. Which of the following git tools do you use?\n (multiple choice: JGit (EGit etc.), Cogito, pg, StGIT, Guilt,\n TopGit, Easy Git, editor/IDE VC integration, gitk, git-gui,\n QGit, GitView, Giggle, tig, git-sh, instaweb, git-cola / ugit,\n GitNub, GitX, GitTortoise, Git Extensions, git-cheetah, Gitosis,\n graphical diff tool, graphical merge tool, other - please specify)\n13. Which git hosting site do you use for your projects?\n (multiple choice: GitHub, repo.or.cz, Gitorious, Unfudle,\n Assembla, Alioth, Fedora Hoster, Savannah, SourceForge,\n freedesktop.org, kernel.org, self hosted, generic web site,\n git hosting site for set of projects, other - please specify)\n14. How do you fetch/get changes from upstream? [NEW!]\n (multiple choice: git, ssh, http, rsync, filesystem, bundle,\n foreign SCM import/script like git-svn, other - please specify)\n15. How do you publish/propagate your changes?\n (multiple choice: push, pull request, format-patch + email,\n format-patch + other, git bundle, git-svn, foreign SCM,\n other - please specify)\n16. Which of the following features do (or did) you use?\n (multiple choice: non-default hooks, working with dirty tree,\n bisect, submodules (subprojects), integration with IDE/editor,\n multiple worktrees (git-new-worktree), gitattributes, stash,\n separate worktree / git.worktree, patch managemtn interface\n (e.g. StGIT), alternates mechanism (sharing object database),\n git bundle (off-line transport), git-filter-branch, commit message\n templates, shallow clone, eol conversion, interactive rebase,\n interactive commit / per-chunk comitting / partial commit,\n detaching HEAD, gitk or other history viewer, git-gui or other\n commit tool, shell completion, git-aware shell prompt)\n\nIn this section number of individual operating systems in \"What\noperating system do you use Git on?\" was reduced a bit, based on\nanswers from previous survey. We might want to put OpenSolaris as\nseparate from \"other Unices\" (which would then be \"proprietary\nUnix\"). The question about hardware platforms got removed.\n\nThe trouble with \"What editor, IDE or RAD you use working with Git?\"\nquestion is coming up with a good list of editors... and that such\nlist is of necessity fairly long. Perhaps it would be better to\nchange it to more generic question\n 10.*What kind of editor, IDE or RAD you use working with Git?\n (multiple choice: simple text editor[1], programmers editor[2],\n IDE or RAD[3], WYSIWYG tool[4], other kind - please specify)\n [1] for example pico, nano, joe, Notepad\n [2] for example Vim, Emacs, TextMate (syntax highlighting,\n autoindentation, integration with other tools, etc.)\n [3] for example KDevelop, Anjuta, MS Visual Studio, but also\n Quanta+, BlueFish or Screem for editing HTML, and Kile\n or LyX for LaTeX.\n [4] text processors such as MS Office or OpenOffice.org,\n but also tools such as Adobe Acrobat (for PDF) or GIMP\n (for images)\n(if we are not to remove this question entirely).\n\nTwo questions in 2008 survey: \"Which porcelains / interfaces /\nimplementations do you use?\" and \"Which git GUI (commit tool or\nhistory viewer, or both) do you use?\" were joined together. The\nquestion \" Which git web interface do you use for your projects/have\ninstalled?\" (where \"use\" was to meant \"deploy\") was removed... perhaps\nunnecessarily.\n\nThe longest question in previous survey, \"How often do you use the\nfollowing forms of git commands or extra git tools?\" (which had to be\nsplit in two because of its length) is not present in this survey\nproposal, as it adds significantly to difficulity and time to fill\nthis survey.\n\n\nWhat do you think of Git?\n^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^\n17. Overall, how happy are you with Git?\n (single choice: unhappy / not so happy / happy / very happy /\n / completely ecstatic)\n18.*How does Git compare to other SCM tools you have used?\n (single choice: git is worse / equal / better than other SCM).\n\nThis whole section don't bring us much tangible information.\nAs we removed section about other SCMs, perhaps question comparing git\nto other SCMs should also be removed?\n\n\nChanges in Git\n^^^^^^^^^^^^^^\n19.*Did you participate in previous Git User's Surveys?\n (multiple choice: in 2008, in 2007, in 2006)\n20.*How do you compare current version with version from year ago?\n (single choice: cannot say[1] / worse / better / no changes)\n [1] perhaps this should include situation where one didn't use\n Git for a year?\n\nThis whole section is considered for deletion to fit in the 20\nquestions limit.\n\n\nGetting help, staying in touch\n^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^\n21. Which form of documentation do you use?\n (matrix form with columns: never used, not useful, somwehat, useful,\n or multiple choice: wiki, on-line help, help with Git)\n22.*Have you tried to get Git help from other people?\n (single choice: yes / no)\n23. What channel did you use to request help?\n (multiple choice: git mailing list, IRC (#git), IRC (other),\n request in blog post or on wiki, asking guru/colleague,\n project mailing list or IRC or forum, Twitter or other microblog,\n instant messenging (IM) like XMPP/Jabber, StackOverflow, other\n - please specify)\n24.*If yes, did you get these problems resolved quickly\n and to your liking?\n (single choice: yes / somewhat / no)\n25. Do you read the mailing list, or watch IRC channel?\n (multiple choice: git@vger.kernel.org, msysGit, Git for Human \n Beings (Google Group), #git IRC channel, #github IRC channel)\n\nThis group is concatenation of former \"Documentation\" and \"Getting\nhelp, staying in touch\" groups. All of \"Documentation\" questions are\ncompressed together to single question encompassing most of issue\ntouched in mentioned group (section).\n\nThe question \"Have you tried to get Git help from other people?\" is a\nbit redundant: if one answered \"What channel did you use to request\nhelp?\" then one did try to get help, isn't it? But only a bit; I\nthink it would help to have this question separately, and not only\nimplied. I am not sure though about \"Did you get these problems\nresolved quickly and to your liking?\" question...\n\n\nOpen forum\n^^^^^^^^^^\n26.*Should Git User's Survey be repeated next year?\n (single choice: yes / no / undecided)\n27. What other comments or suggestions do you have \n that are not covered by the questions above?\n (free-form)\n\nAs you can see there is only _one_ free-form open-ended question in\nthe whole survey. While I am not completely against adding more, \nI'd prefer to keep their number to the absolute minimum.\n\n-- \nJakub Narebski\nPoland\n"},{"id":"116025","messageId":"fabb9a1e0906101155y330e9088h1a57a738593636b8@mail.gmail.com","threadId":"19578","inReplyTo":"200906102042.15119.jnareb@gmail.com","subject":"Re: [RFH] Questions for Git User's Survey 2009","fromName":"Sverre Rabbelier","fromEmail":"srabbelier@gmail.com","sentAt":"2009-06-10T18:55:28Z","receivedAt":"2009-06-10T18:55:28Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"srabbelier@gmail.com","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/3098?v=4"},"body":"Heya,\n\nOn Wed, Jun 10, 2009 at 20:42, Jakub Narebski<jnareb@gmail.com> wrote:\n> 14. It is hard to distinguish sometimes: JGit is Java \nimplementation, developed alongside EGit Eclipse plugin; Grit is\nRuby library, but also partial implementation, etc.\n\nWe would probably have place then for one free-form question:\n\n11'.What tool would you like to have Git support in?\n (this includes language bindings / reimplementations)\n\n> > 16. Note that this\nfuture test run of survey would have data removed before true survey!\n\n\nGit User's Survey 2009: proposed questions\n==========================================\n\nQuestions marked with star (e.g. 11.*) are questions which I am not\nsure if they should be in this survey. If there is more than one\nquestion with the same number, and they have different version suffix,\ne.g. 10v1 and 10v2, it means that there are laternate versions of the\nsame question (and of course only one would be in 2009 survey).\n\n\nAbout you:\n^^^^^^^^^^\n01. What country do you live in?\n (free-form question, or drop-down list of countries (select))\n\n02. How old are you (in years)?\n (free-form / text entry, or age range: single choice)\n\n Possible values for age ranges, taken from previous survey \n analysis (GitSurvey2008 page on Git Wiki):\n * < 18\n * 18-21\n * 22-25\n * 26-30\n * 31-40\n * 41-50\n * 51-75\n * > 75\n \nWhat do you think about this set of ranges? Should it be changed?\nOr perhaps free-form age is a better solution (it is not as if\nanalysis of this field was hard).\n\n\nGetting started with Git\n^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^\n03. Did you find Git easy to learn?\n (single choice:) \n * very hard\n * hard\n * reasonably easy / average\n * easy\n * very easy\n\n04. Did you find Git easy to use? [NEW!]\n (single choice, the same set as in previous question:)\n * very hard\n * hard\n * reasonably easy / average\n * easy\n * very easy\n\n05. Which Git version(s) are you using?\n (multiple choice, as one can for example use different version on\n different machines:) \n + pre 1.3, \n + 1.3.x, \n + 1.4.x, \n + 1.5.x, \n + 1.6.x, \n + 'master',\n + 'next', \n + minor release 1.x.y.z [NEW!, ???]\n + other - please explain (free-form field)\n\n06. Rate your own proficiency with Git:\n (single choice:)\n * novice\n * casual, needs advice\n * everyday use\n * can offer advice\n * know it very well (guru)\n\nActually this is meant to be something like 1-5 numerical\ngrade of one's proficiency in git. Do you have other proposals\nfor naming possible answers?\n\n[The whole section about \"Other SCMs\" was removed]\n\nHow do you use Git?\n^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^\n07. I use Git for (check all that apply):\n (multiple choice:) \n + work projects, \n + unpaid projects; \n \n + proprietary code, \n + OSS development, \n + private (unpublished) code; \n\n + code, \n + personal data, \n + documents, \n + static website, \n + web app;\n\n + sharing data or sync, \n + backup, \n + wiki/blog/other web app backend,\n + managing configuration files, \n + frontend to other SCM;\n \n + other - please specify\n\nEmpty lines here are used to separate kinds of choices, although most\npossibly they would be not present in the final version on Survs.com.\nWhat things are lacking in above list? Should we remove some less\noften used things (but in 2008 survey it is only wiki/blog backend\nthat received decidely less answers... with 10% / 290 responses)?\n\n08. How do you obtain Git?\n (multiple choice:)\n + binary package, \n + source tarball, \n + source package or script[*], \n + pull from (main) repository\n [*] Explanation: so git is installed in a system of packages\n\n09. What operating system do you use Git on?\n (multiple choice:) \n + Linux, \n + MacOS X, \n + MS Windows/msysGit, \n + MS Windows/Cygwin, \n + *BSD (FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD, etc.), \n + other Unix, \n + other - please specify\n\nIn this question number of possible answrs was reduced a bit, based on\nanswers from previous survey. We might want to put OpenSolaris as\nseparate from \"other Unices\" (which would then be \"proprietary Unix\")\n-- what do you think? Should we pot Solaris, OpenSolaris, AIX, SunOS,\nIRIX, SCO SV as separate possibilities instead of groupng them under\n'other Unix'? I'd rather have smaller number of choices; I think this\nmakes for easier to take survey.\n\n10v1.*What editor, IDE or RAD you use working with Git?\n (either free-form, or multiple choice:) \n IDE/RAD:\n + Eclipse, \n + NetBeans,\n + IntelliJ IDEA, \n\n + MS Visual Studio, \n + KDevelop, \n + Anjuta, \n + XCode,\n\n editor:\n + Emacs and XEmacs, \n + Vim, \n + Notepad++, \n + gedit, \n + Geany,\n + Kate, \n + TextMate, \n + 'E' Text Editor, \n + SciTE, \n\n free-form part:\n + other - please specify.\n\n10v2.*What do you use to edit contents under version control with Git?\n What kind of editor, IDE or RAD you use working[*] with Git?\n (multiple choice:)\n + simple text editor[1], \n + programmers editor[2],\n + IDE or RAD[3], \n + WYSIWYG tool[4], \n + other kind - please specify\n [*] this means using it often, and not once or twice\n [1] for example pico, nano, joe, Notepad\n [2] for example Vim, Emacs, TextMate (syntax highlighting,\n autoindentation, integration with other tools, etc.)\n [3] for example Eclipse, KDevelop, Anjuta, MS Visual Studio, Xcode,\n but also Quanta+, BlueFish or Screem for editing HTML, \n and Kile or LyX for LaTeX.\n [4] word processors such as MS Office or OpenOffice.org,\n but also tools such as Adobe Acrobat (for PDF) or GIMP\n (for images), or WYSIWYG DTP tools such as QuarkXPress,\n PageMaker or Scribus, or WYSIWYG HTML editors such as\n FrontPage, Dreamweaver or KompoZer, etc.\n\nThis (optional) question comes in two flavours. Which one to choose?\n\nThere is v1 with detailed list of possible editors and IDEs; the\nproblem with this version is coming up with comprehensive list of\neditors and IDE (to not have too much of free-form 'other' answers,\nwhich one has to analyze), balanced on the other hand with desire to\nnot have too long (unwieldy) list of answers / possible responses.\n\nThen there is alternate shorter v2 which asks only about \"kind\" of\neditor/RAD one use. It has much less possible answers (although the\nquestion if all possible reasonable responses are included remains,\nonly much reduced), which is good... but it also provides less\ninformation. What other kinds of tools used to edit version managed\ncontent there might be?\n\n11v1. What Git interfaces, frontends and tools do you use?\n (multiple choice:)\n Implementations:\n + git (core) commandline, \n + JGit, \n + via library / language binding (e.g. Grit)\n\n Porcelains:\n + Cogito (DEPRECATED), \n + Easy Git\n + Pyrite (?)\n\n Patch and topic branch management interfaces:\n + pg / Patchy Git (DEPRECATED), \n + StGIT, \n + Guilt (formerly gq),\n + TopGit\n\n History viewers and commit tools:\n + gitk\n + git gui\n + QGit\n + GitView\n + Giggle\n + GitNub\n + GitX\n + git-cola (formerly ugit)\n + tig\n\n Filemanager / shell extensions:\n + TortoiseGit\n + Git Extensions\n + git-cheetah\n\n Other tools:\n + instaweb\n + git-sh\n\n Other kinds of tools:\n + editor/IDE VC integration\n + graphical diff tool\n + graphical merge tool\n + graphical blame or pickaxe tool\n\n + other - please specify:\n\nThis combines \"Which porcelains / interfaces / implementations do you\nuse?\" with \"Which of the following git tools do you use?\". Which form of documentation do you use?\n (matrix form:)\n columns: never used / not useful / somewhat / useful,\n rows:\n # Git Wiki, \n # on-line help, \n # help distributed with Git,\n\nAll of former \"Documentation\" questions: \"Do you use the Git wiki?\",\n\"Do you find Git wiki useful?\", \"Do you find Git's on-line help\n(homepages, documentation) useful?\", \"Do you find help distributed\nwith Git useful?\" are compressed together to single question\nencompassing most of issue touched in mentioned group (section).\n\nThe question \"Do you contribute to Git wiki?\" and open-ended\n(free-form) question \"What could be improved on the Git homepage(s)?\"\nwere removed from the survey.\n\n23.*Have you tried to get Git help from other people?\n (single choice:)\n * yes \n * no\n\nThis question \"Have you tried to get Git help from other people?\" is a\nbit redundant: if one answered \"What channel did you use to request\nhelp?\" then one did try to get help, isn't it? But only a bit; I\nthink it would help to have this question separately, and not only\nimplied. On the other hand we want to reduce number of questions in\nthe survey.\n\n24. I have also added\nStackOverflow, collaborative programming Q & A site (started in 2009).\n\n25.*If yes, did you get these problems resolved quickly\n and to your liking?\n (single choice:) \n * yes \n * somewhat \n * no\n\nThis question doesn't bring much information to us, and it counts\nagains number of questions in survey.
