Overall, the differences to Git 1.6.3 have been reduced \ndramatically, thanks to the immense efforts of Johannes Sixt on the test \nsuite.\n\nThere are two major modifications relative to git.git, though: Marius \nStorm-Olsen's readdir() and nedmalloc patches. They are rather large, but \nwell-contained changes, and we tested extensively in the last few weeks.\n\nOne consequence is that the test-suite no longer takes 45 minutes on the \nmachine I test on, but less than 20 minutes.\n\nAnd now, without further ado, the release notes:\n\nGit Release Notes (Git-1.6.3-preview20090507)\nLast update: 07 May 2009\n\nKnown issues\n\n- Some commands are not yet supported on Windows and excluded from the \n installation; namely: git archimport, git cvsexportcommit, git \n cvsimport, git cvsserver, git instaweb, git send-email, git shell.\n- The Logitec QuickCam software can cause spurious crashes. See \"Why does \n make often crash creating a sh.exe.stackdump file when I try to compile \n my source code?\" on the MinGW Wiki \n (http://www.mingw.org/wiki/Environment_issues)\n- The Quick Launch icon will only be installed for the user running setup \n (typically the Administrator). This is a technical restriction and will \n not change.\n- Git Bash launched through the Explorer shell extension does not have the \n git icon in its taskbar. This is a technical restriction and will not \n change.\n- git send-mail does not work properly (Issue 27).\n- curl uses $HOME/_netrc instead of $HOME/.netrc.\n- If you want to specify a different location for --upload-pack, you have \n to start the absolute path with two slashes. Otherwise MSys will mangle \n the path.\n- git and bash have serious problems with non-ASCII file names (Issue 80, \n 108, 159, 188).\n- If configured to use plink, you will have to connect with putty first, \n as you cannot accept the host key due to the console window being \n blocked (Issue 96).\n- MinGW does not support IPv6 yet (Issue 182).\n- When run from cmd.exe instead of Git Bash, some characters seem to be \n \"swallowed\" from Git's output (Issue 192).\n- There are a spurious write errors during rebase (Issue 200) that seem \n not to be reproducible on most computers.\n- As merge tools are executed using the MSys bash, options starting with \n \"/\" need to be handled specially: MSys would interpret that as a POSIX \n path, so you need to double the slash (Issue 226). Example: instead of \n \"/base\", say \"//base\". Also, extra care has to be paid to pass Windows \n programs Windows paths, as they have no clue about MSys style POSIX \n paths -- You can use something like $(cmd //c echo \"$POSIXPATH\").\n\nChanges since Git-1.6.2.2-preview20090408\n\nNew Features\n\n- Comes with official git 1.6.3.\n- Thanks to Marius Storm-Olsen, Git has a substantially faster readdir() \n implementation now.\n- Marius Storm-Olsen also contributed a patch to include nedmalloc, again \n speeding up Git noticably.\n- Compiled with GCC 4.4.0\n\nBugfixes\n\n- Portable Git contains a README.portable.\n- Portable Git now actually includes the builtins.\n- Portable Git includes git-cmd.bat and git-bash.bat.\n- Portable Git is now shipped as a .7z; it still is a self-extracting \n archive if you rename it to .exe.\n- Git includes the Perl Encode module now.\n- Git now includes the filter-branch tool.\n- There is a workaround for a Windows 7 regression triggering a crash in \n the progress reporting (e.g. during a clone). This fixes issues 236 and \n 247.\n- gitk tries not to crash when it is closed while reading references \n (Issue 125, thanks Pat Thoyts).\n- In some setups, hard-linking is not as reliable as it should be, so we \n have a workaround which avoids hard links in some situations (Issues 222 \n and 229).\n- git-svn sets core.autocrlf to false now, hopefully shutting up most of \n the git-svn reports.\n\nCiao,\nDscho (on behalf of the msysGit team)\n"},{"id":"113263","messageId":"46d6db660905071359l66ff81afkc442f435edadb07f@mail.gmail.com","threadId":"19236","inReplyTo":"alpine.DEB.1.00.0905071554070.16585@intel-tinevez-2-302","subject":"Re: Announce: Git for Windows 1.6.3","fromName":"Christian MICHON","fromEmail":"christian.michon@gmail.com","sentAt":"2009-05-07T20:59:42Z","receivedAt":"2009-05-07T20:59:42Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"christian.michon@gmail.com","avatar":"https://gravatar.com/avatar/8a7c327b21187fbcab5c27640a49450eec72e0355dc292501197f27a5a744ec4?d=mp&s=160"},"body":"\nOn Thu, May 7, 2009 at 7:27 PM, Johannes Schindelin\n<Johannes.Schindelin@gmx.de> wrote:\n>\n> Hi,\n>\n> this mail tries to inform you that a new version of Git for Windows has\n> been released.  Overall, the differences to Git 1.6.3 have been reduced\n> dramatically, thanks to the immense efforts of Johannes Sixt on the test\n> suite.\n>\n> There are two major modifications relative to git.git, though: Marius\n> Storm-Olsen's readdir() and nedmalloc patches.  They are rather large, but\n> well-contained changes, and we tested extensively in the last few weeks.\n>\n> One consequence is that the test-suite no longer takes 45 minutes on the\n> machine I test on, but less than 20 minutes.\n>\n> And now, without further ado, the release notes:\n>\n> Git Release Notes (Git-1.6.3-preview20090507)\n> Last update: 07 May 2009\n>\n> Known issues\n>\n> - Some commands are not yet supported on Windows and excluded from the\n>  installation; namely: git archimport, git cvsexportcommit, git\n>  cvsimport, git cvsserver, git instaweb, git send-email, git shell.\n> - The Logitec QuickCam software can cause spurious crashes.
