In some cases, Cygwin will work\nfaster, but there are operations that are very costly under Cygwin\nsuch as fork(). So, what is faster depends on what you do, and\nthere are many other factors here such available memory or\npresent some antivirus programs, which can kill performance...\nBut, in general, if you work on Windows, it makes much more\nsense to Cygwin or MSysGit than running Git under VmWare...\n\n\nDmitry\n"},{"id":"107319","messageId":"49B2B5B6.1050209@obry.net","threadId":"18169","inReplyTo":"c115fd3c0903060638lfc52073nd40e0d7379d7f593@mail.gmail.com","subject":"Re: Using Git with windows","fromName":"Pascal Obry","fromEmail":"pascal@obry.net","sentAt":"2009-03-07T17:58:14Z","receivedAt":"2009-03-07T17:58:14Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"pascal@obry.net","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/467069?v=4"},"body":"Tim Visher a écrit :\n> I wouldn't bother waiting. I do not want Apache just for browsing\n> a Git repo.\n> \nPascal, I also installed lighttpd on cygwin, just so that I could test gitweb\nand cgit (I have Apache installed on Linux).  I had a few problems getting it\nto work at first. Only later did I notice that \"git-instaweb\" didn't work.\nHaving fixed the installation problems earlier, I fixed git-instaweb and then\nforgot to send in the patch. Oops... Patch on the way... ;-)\n\n[I had intended to make several other changes and submit it later...]\n\nYou may also notice that \"git-instaweb\" does not provide the git-logo.png\nand git-favicon.png; so if that bothers you, just copy those files from\nyour git repo into the target repo's .git/gitweb directory. (That was one\nof the things I was going to look at fixing)\n\n<off-topic>\nNote: if you decide to try cgit, then be aware that lighttpd has a bug which\ncauses problems with mixed-case pathnames in the pathinfo. lighttpd down-cases\nthe filename part of the pathinfo when on a case insensitive filesystem, so\ncgit can't find the corresponding blob. (This is not a problem with gitweb).\n\nI sent a fix for this bug to (who I thought was) the lighttpd maintainer, but\ndidn't get any response; so don't count on a fix for this.\n\nAn amusing, but impractical, workaround for this is to name your document root\nsomething like /123 ie the path is numeric (and so does not differ in case ;-)\n[lighttpd uses a runtime test of the case-sensitive-ness of the document root\npathname to control this behaviour]\n\nAlso, I could not get lighttpd to execute a cgi program with an \".exe\" extension\nso I had to create a simple script, viz:\n\n$ cat /var/www/cgit/cgit.cgi\n#!/bin/sh\nexec /var/www/cgit/cgit.cgi.exe\n$\n<off-topic>\n\nATB,\nRamsay Jones\n"}]}
