I assume\nthis has something to do with cygwin's locations for header files and\nsuch, but I have no real idea. The first part of my question, then\nwould be what the issue is that I'm encountering when attempting to\nbuild git in Cygwin?\n\nMy eventual goal is to have git installed with man, info, and html\npages, into my (and my fellow developers') personal bin, man, info,\nand html directories at ~/x. It appeared that I could do that with\n./configure but per the response I got earlier, this doesn't seem to\nbe the case.\n\nSecond, I built and installed 1.6.2-rc2 and it still is claiming a\n--version rc1. I'm not sure if this is systemic or not, and obviously\nit would be bad if it was just me as it means I'm doing something\nwrong.\n\nThoughts?\n\n-- \n\nIn Christ,\n\nTimmy V.\n\nhttp://burningones.com/\nhttp://five.sentenc.es/ - Spend less time on e-mail\n"},{"id":"106339","messageId":"20090226154450.GA20745@coredump.intra.peff.net","threadId":"18033","inReplyTo":"c115fd3c0902260723o4d475df5yecc9ff23c55c7af4@mail.gmail.com","subject":"Re: Building 1.6.2-rc2 in Cygwin","fromName":"Jeff King","fromEmail":"peff@peff.net","sentAt":"2009-02-26T15:44:50Z","receivedAt":"2009-02-26T15:44:50Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"peff@peff.net","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/45925?v=4"},"body":"On Thu, Feb 26, 2009 at 10:23:54AM -0500, Tim Visher wrote:\n\n> The reason I'm using `configure` at all is that when I simply do a\n> `make` without a `make configure; ./configure` first, it fails with a\n> message like:\n> \n> $ make\n> CC fast-import.o\n> In file included from builtin.h:4,\n> from fast-import.c:142:\n> git-compat-util.h:100:19: iconv.h: No such file or directory\n> make: *** [fast-import.o] Error 1\n> \n> Once I configure, even without any options, it builds fine and I can\n\nIt sounds like you don't have iconv. You can build with:\n\n make NO_ICONV=1\n\non such a platform, which is more or less what the configure script is\ndoing. Try running './configure' and investigating the\nconfig.mak.autogen it generates; this gets pulled directly into the\nMakefile. You can correlate the variables it is setting with the\ndescriptions in the Makefile.\n\n> My eventual goal is to have git installed with man, info, and html\n> pages, into my (and my fellow developers') personal bin, man, info,\n> and html directories at ~/x. It appeared that I could do that with\n> ./configure but per the response I got earlier, this doesn't seem to\n> be the case.\n\nI think the right thing to do is to fix the broken autoconf support, as\nper my other message. But you can workaround it with:\n\n ./configure\n make htmldir=~/man bindir=~/bin mandir=~/man infodir=~/info\n\nThe latter command is simply overriding what's in the Makefile with\nwhat you provide on the command line (so any defaults, or anything\nprovided by ./configure is ignored).\n\n-Peff\n"},{"id":"106430","messageId":"be6fef0d0902270437y14b3eb6kdf061109df19a77e@mail.gmail.com","threadId":"18033","inReplyTo":"c115fd3c0902260723o4d475df5yecc9ff23c55c7af4@mail.gmail.com","subject":"Re: Building 1.6.2-rc2 in Cygwin","fromName":"Tay Ray Chuan","fromEmail":"rctay89@gmail.com","sentAt":"2009-02-27T12:37:53Z","receivedAt":"2009-02-27T12:37:53Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"rctay89@gmail.com","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/61553?v=4"},"body":"Hi,\n\nOn Thu, Feb 26, 2009 at 11:23 PM, Tim Visher <tim.visher@gmail.com> wrote:\n>    $ make\n>        CC fast-import.o\n>    In file included from builtin.h:4,\n>                     from fast-import.c:142:\n>    git-compat-util.h:100:19: iconv.h: No such file or directory\n>    make: *** [fast-import.o] Error 1\n\nDid you try installing libiconv library?
