I plan on using both since they are compatible with\neach other.\n\n > \n > > 2. There is a vc-git.el in the Emacs top-of-trunk sources, and\n > > another one in the git/contrib/emacs directory in the Git\n > > sources. Which one should I use? The one in the Git tree is an older version that's no\n > longer maintained, though it can still be useful if you are running an\n > old Emacs version.\n\nHaving the git.el and the vc-git.el file in the same git sources\ndirectory, git/contrib/emacs, fouls up standard `require' loading\npractice on Emacs 23 since Emacs 23 has vc-git.el in the load-path\nalready. This is the way that I have hacked around it in my Emacs 23\nsetup, which also explains why:\n\n\t;; We can't use (add-to-list 'load-path git-emacs-lisp-dir) here because\n\t;; there is an older version of vc-git.el in that same directory, and we\n\t;; prefer the one that comes with Emacs 23:\n\t(load-file (expand-file-name \"git.el\" git-emacs-lisp-dir))\n\nSince the vc-git.el is old, would it be feasible/desirable to rename\ngit/contrib/emacs/vc-git.el to git/contrib/emacs/old/vc-git.el so as\nto allow older Emacs to continue to load the older version?\n\nI would suppose that if/when git.el is moved into the Emacs sources,\nthen the same renaming operation would be done for git.el, too.\n\nAlso, I could not find any section in the Git manual for git.el.\nGiven that it is in the contrib directory, perhaps a separate manual\nfile would be appropriate?\n\nThanks for your help!\nBrent\n"},{"id":"103000","messageId":"7v63jrbehl.fsf@gitster.siamese.dyndns.org","threadId":"17519","inReplyTo":"87ab93yfjx.fsf@wine.dyndns.org","subject":"Re: Git vc-git.el versus Emacs vc-git.el versus Gits git.el","fromName":"Junio C Hamano","fromEmail":"gitster@pobox.com","sentAt":"2009-02-03T17:46:14Z","receivedAt":"2009-02-03T17:46:14Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"gitster@pobox.com","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/54884?v=4"},"body":"Alexandre Julliard <julliard@winehq.org> writes:\n\n>> 2.
