Also when converting old SVN repositories,\nsuch objects needs to be pruned.  Somewhat related I also need to enumerate\nthe offending large binary objects that I should get rid of.\n\nIt is unpractical to live by the rule that no big objects should ever\nbe committed\naccidentally given the number of people involved and the walks of life they come\nfrom.... So there really needs to be some way to deal with this once the\ndamage has been done.\n\n\n-- \nØyvind Harboe\nhttp://www.zylin.com/zy1000.html\nARM7 ARM9 XScale Cortex\nJTAG debugger and flash programmer\n"},{"id":"99465","messageId":"200901061339.49843.trast@student.ethz.ch","threadId":"17020","inReplyTo":"c09652430901060409p23d2737ck6e41b3f8f1eaf01@mail.gmail.com","subject":"Re: Migration problems from SVN","fromName":"Thomas Rast","fromEmail":"trast@student.ethz.ch","sentAt":"2009-01-06T12:39:47Z","receivedAt":"2009-01-06T12:39:47Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"tr@thomasrast.ch","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/153510?v=4"},"body":"Øyvind Harboe wrote:\n> If I early on and accidentally commit a *large* binary object, how do I get rid\n> of it from .git again?\n\ngit-filter-branch can do that.  See the top of the EXAMPLES section in\n\n  http://www.kernel.org/pub/software/scm/git/docs/git-filter-branch.html\n\nThis requires a rewrite of all history affected; make sure you\nunderstand the implications if you have already published it.  See the\nDISCUSSION in the same manpage.\n\nAlso note that due to the distributed nature, you cannot force such\nchanged history upon anyone; i.e., you cannot remove the objects from\nanyone else's repository.  You can only ask them to accept your new\nhistory and forget that the old one was ever there.\n\n-- \nThomas Rast\ntrast@{inf,student}.ethz.ch\n\n\n"},{"id":"99467","messageId":"c09652430901060444w2aff527fmb0855aaa707f84fa@mail.gmail.com","threadId":"17020","inReplyTo":"200901061339.49843.trast@student.ethz.ch","subject":"Re: Migration problems from SVN","fromName":"Øyvind Harboe","fromEmail":"oyvind.harboe@zylin.com","sentAt":"2009-01-06T12:44:02Z","receivedAt":"2009-01-06T12:44:02Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"oyvind.harboe@zylin.com","avatar":null},"body":"On Tue, Jan 6, 2009 at 1:39 PM, Thomas Rast <trast@student.ethz.ch> wrote:\n> Øyvind Harboe wrote:\n>> If I early on and accidentally commit a *large* binary object, how do I get rid\n>> of it from .git again?\n>\n> git-filter-branch can do that. There is a lot to read and git is refreshingly\ndifferent and there is a lot of things to catch up on.\n\n\n\n\n-- \nØyvind Harboe\nhttp://www.zylin.com/zy1000.html\nARM7 ARM9 XScale Cortex\nJTAG debugger and flash programmer\n"}]}
