I\nread http://kernel.org/pub/software/scm/git/docs/v1.4.4.4/git-rm.html\nwhich I interpreted to mean that git-rm removed only from the index,\nand not from the working tree. In retrospect, the short description\nis clear: \"git-rm - Remove files from the working tree and from the\nindex,\" but I was confused by the language:\n\"<file>…\n\n Files to remove from the index and optionally, from the working\ntree as well.\n-f\n\n Remove files from the working tree as well as from the index.\"\n\nBecause of \"optionally\" and the very existence of the \"-f\" option\nsuggests that you have to do something extra to ask git-rm to mess\nwith the working tree.\n\nThe manpage is much clearer, and while I recovered the files I\naccidentally removed simply with git checkout, I suggest that the\nwebpage be made a bit clearer. In particular, adding info about how\nto _only_ remove files from the index would be helpful.\n\nI'd be happy to make the changes to the webpage; I don't know how to\ndo that or if it's appropriate.\n\nThanks!\n\n\n-a.\n"},{"id":"99333","messageId":"20090104223522.GH21154@genesis.frugalware.org","threadId":"16987","inReplyTo":"62a60dd90901041410j283866e5ja39c3bda447fed36@mail.gmail.com","subject":"Re: unclear description of git-rm on kernel.org","fromName":"Miklos Vajna","fromEmail":"vmiklos@frugalware.org","sentAt":"2009-01-04T22:35:22Z","receivedAt":"2009-01-04T22:35:22Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"vmiklos@frugalware.org","avatar":"https://gravatar.com/avatar/401c1cbbb3a5d13e650c691a2c71d6fd0b80df1a01bc74d9f1972675dd58f2bd?d=mp&s=160"},"body":"On Sun, Jan 04, 2009 at 05:10:11PM -0500, alec resnick <alec@sproutward.org> wrote:\n> I was trying to remove a number of files from a git repo I had.
