(info \"(make)Options/Recursion\").\n\nA two minute check into Makefile shows that the recursion is\nimplemented via $(MAKE), which is the recommended way to do it.  It's\nimpossible to \"forget\" $(MAKEFLAGS), since the docs clearly say that\nit is always exported unless explicitly unexported.\n\nThe *real* reason why it rebuilds GIT-VERSION-FILE is that the\nMakefile says '-include GIT-VERSION-FILE', and uses the version info\nto decide some parts of the build process.  (It'll also do a similar\nthing with the $CFLAGS detection code.)  Since this influences the\nactual commands executed, it seems sensible to run them even under\n'make -n'.\n\n> By the way, why would an offline make need\n> /bin/sh: curl-config: command not found\n\nFrom somewhere near the top of Makefile, which is definitely a\nrecommended read:\n\n# Define NO_CURL if you do not have libcurl installed.  git-http-pull and\n# git-http-push are not built, and you cannot use http:// and https://\n# transports.\n\n\nNext time please take the time to investigate at least a little bit\ninto your \"issues\" before starting to cry foul.\n\n-- \nThomas Rast\ntrast@{inf,student}.ethz.ch\n\n"}]}
