Official? There is nothing official about\nit. \"Unofficial git blog\", or \"A git developer blog\" (or \"A git\nfollower blog\"; unfortunately names like gitter or gitster for git\npower user's, like TeXnician for TeX users, are taken by nicknames on\n#git, if I remember correctly). That shows why the focus could be different.\n\n\"Git Traffic\" was great because it attempted to directly address the issue\nthat the traffic on the mailing list was simply too high (and still is) to\nfollow for casual observers. It did so by giving a comprehensive summary\nof what important topics were discussed recently on the list from the\nviewpoint of one dedicated person who followed many, perhaps not all,\nimportant threads carefully, who very well knew what was going on, and who\nhad a good taste on what is important and what is not.\n\nBut \"Planet Git\" is quite different from \"Git Traffic\". For the latter,\nsomebody needs to do a real work, continuously. But more importantly, I\nthink they would serve different purposes. A \"Planet\" could be valuable\nto have with or without \"Traffic\".\n\nI think what was presented as \"Official Git blog\", however, is also\ndifferent from what people expect a \"Planet\" to be. I do not think it is\nunreasonable to expect or ask Felipe to improve on making his service more\n\"Planet\" like.\n\nA \"Planet\", as I understand it, is an aggregator of (selected) people's\nblogs, and even though I am not currently involved in any Planet nor\nfollow any Planet myself, I can imagine that it could be a valuable\nresource to have a \"Planet Git\" that subscribes to and aggregates what\ninfluential figures write on git in their blogs.\n\nFelipe's page currently is a random collection of links, and other than\ntheir titles, there is no indication for readers to judge which link is\nworth clicking and reading. It does not even mention who wrote each\npiece, let alone editorial comments (e.g. \"This is worth reading\") like\nyou added. When you click one of them in order to read it, you leave the\n\"list of links\". That is not how navigation (the click and thought flow\nfor the readers) usually works in a \"Planet\".\n\nIf this wants to be a \"Planet Git\", I do not think there is any need for\nFelipe to ask \"who wants accounts?\" It would go the other way. Instead,\nFelipe, as the coordinator of the \"Planet\", would find people who writes\nnoteworthy things on git on their own blogs, would ask for permission to\nslurp and aggregate what they wrote, and produce the page by aggregating\ntheir writings. That would make a good \"Planet Git\".\n\nExpecting people to apply for an account and write for that page would not\nfly. As Felipe said himself, many people already have their own blog.\n\nHaving said all that, I am not sure \"Planet\" would work for the git\ncommunity as well as it would for others. I've been involved in some\nplanets and they are not exactly great.\n\nOne disadvantage of planets is usually there's no control of the topic\nof the posts. For example in planet GNOME there's some people that\nmostly blog only about GNOME, but other people blog about everything,\nincluding what they did in the morning, ate at lunch, and discussed at\nthe water cooler. Some people have their blogs properly categorized\nand the right feeds go to the right planets, but they are the\nminority.\n\nPlanets are great if you want people to \"get intimate\" with the\ncommunity, probably a small one. Not for git IMHO.\n\nThere's a single \"planet\" I know that doesn't follow the norm;\nbeagleboard news[1]. There one guy basically uses Google Reader to\nshare whatever he thinks is somehow interesting for the beagleboard\ncommunity. The advantage is that the feed is much more focused than a\nplanet, but still there's a lot of bias in the links, which sometimes\nhave nothing to do with the beagleboard.\n\n> Felipe's page currently is a random collection of links, and other than\n> their titles, there is no indication for readers to judge which link is\n> worth clicking and reading. That is not how navigation (the click and thought flow\n> for the readers) usually works in a \"Planet\".\n\nLets remember that this is the first try, and there's many more links\nthat what would fit in any given week, but I just didn't want to leave\nthem out.\n\nMaybe for the next weeks I'll do a bit of explanation about each link, lets see.\n\n> If this wants to be a \"Planet Git\", I do not think there is any need for\n> Felipe to ask \"who wants accounts?\" It would go the other way. I\ndon't expect the list of dedicated bloggers to be that big, hence my\nsecond proposal:\n\nb) git blog\n\nA blog can be shared by a bunch of people, much line online news\nsites. Junio could write a post once for each release, for example,\nwithout having to setup his own blog, maybe somebody else can\ncopy-paste \"What's cooking in git.git\", or any kind of semi-official\nannouncement.\n\nAnd I'm sure there will be one or two developers who wouldn't mind\nsharing their frustrations and/or visions.\n\nThese two are not exclusive, of course.\n\nFor a) I need a server (there's a few already offered), setup the\nplanet software, and people to send me their RSS feeds, which\nhopefully are categorized for git-specific posts. I don't have much\nfaith on this, nor interest.\n\nFor b) I just need interested people to send me their emails.\n\n[1] http://beagleboard.org/news\n\n-- \nFelipe Contreras\n"},{"id":"97219","messageId":"94a0d4530812051357m4f0bc591n802c41a78e698b3b@mail.gmail.com","threadId":"16601","inReplyTo":"adf1fd3d0812051344x79fe2c10i77b2abb8e7e19fe@mail.gmail.com","subject":"Re: Git weekly news: 2008-49","fromName":"Felipe Contreras","fromEmail":"felipe.contreras@gmail.com","sentAt":"2008-12-05T21:57:26Z","receivedAt":"2008-12-05T21:57:26Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"felipe.contreras@gmail.com","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/8358?v=4"},"body":"On Fri, Dec 5, 2008 at 11:44 PM, Santi Béjar <santi@agolina.net> wrote:\n> 2008/12/5 Felipe Contreras <felipe.contreras@gmail.com>:\n>> On Fri, Dec 5, 2008 at 6:02 PM, Jakub Narebski <jnareb@gmail.com> wrote:\n>\n> [...]\n>\n>>>> But here are the links anyway.
