The default is \"merge\", which\n> \n> Here, the list is not in alphabetic order anymore.\n\nAfter my change, the list is in alphabetical order by the first\ncomponent (before the first dot). I assume you're pointing out that I\nhaven't separated the merge.<driver> parameters from the non-<driver>\nmerge parameters.\n\nThe reason I left it that way was I thought there might be some reason\nwhy merge.conflictstyle is in config.txt rather than merge-config.txt\n(the difference being that it appears in \"man git-config\" but not\n\"man git-merge\"), and to keep that arrangement while grouping together\nthe non-<driver> merge parameters, I would have to split\nmerge-config.txt into two separately included files.\n\nI went back and looked at the commit (b5412484) that documented\nmerge.conflictstyle, and it appears that the placement in config.txt may\nhave been a mistake arising from the unsortedness of config.txt rather\nthan a conscious decision. Thus, I'll move that entry to\nmerge-config.txt for the better grouping. That does mean \"man\ngit-merge\" will contain two explanations of merge.conflictstyle (the\nbrief config-parameter one and the \"HOW CONFLICTS ARE PRESENTED\"\nsection), but I don't see that as a big problem.\n\n> BTW, your commit message should emphasize the use-cases where an\n> alphabetic order is a real benefit. Otherwise, this is just code churn.\n\nI don't see alphabetization as a major benefit except that it might help\npeople add new parameters in the right place (case in point: the\naddition of merge.conflictstyle). And I figured that the config\nparameters might as well be in /some/ order. I'll state that in the\ncommit message.\n\nUpdated patch to follow.\n\nMatt\n"},{"id":"96523","messageId":"1227688010.2680.0.camel@mattlaptop2.local","threadId":"16438","inReplyTo":"1227556809.2628.8.camel@mattlaptop2.local","subject":"[PATCH v2] config.txt: alphabetize configuration sections","fromName":"Matt McCutchen","fromEmail":"matt@mattmccutchen.net","sentAt":"2008-11-26T08:26:50Z","receivedAt":"2008-11-26T08:26:50Z","isPatch":true,"sender":{"key":"matt@mattmccutchen.net","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/8885753?v=4"},"body":"I figured the sections might as well be in some order, so I chose alphabetical\nbut with \"core\" at the beginning.
