(I've mentioned\nit before on-list in the context of a modified \"git status\" output.)\n\nGoogle developed two tools, repo and Gerrit, and open sourced them\nunder the Apache License:\n\n http://android.git.kernel.org/?p=tools/repo.git\n http://android.git.kernel.org/?p=tools/gerrit.git\n\n git://android.git.kernel.org/tools/repo.git\n git://android.git.kernel.org/tools/gerrit.git\n\nrepo is a Python application to bind together Git repositories,\nsomething like \"git submodule\", except it can track a project's\nbranch rather than a specific Git commit. repo is also able to\nnatively import a tarball or zip file and use it to initialize a\nrepository from an upstream source, then apply git based changes\non top of that tarball. In other words, repo is (more or less)\nbuilt to manage an OS distribution, in Git.\n\nGerrit is a web based code review system, forked off the open\nsourced Rietveld code review system. Gerrit runs on the highly\nscaleable Google App Engine platform, but probably could be ported\nto an open-source MySQL or PostgreSQL backend if people really\nwanted to do that.\n\n\nYou can read some more of how Android has applied these tools to\nits development process here:\n\n http://source.android.com/download\n http://source.android.com/submit-patches/workflow\n http://source.android.com/download/using-repo\n\nAlthough the current tool documentation is only on the Android\nsite, both the repo and Gerrit tools are not specific to Android\nand are designed to be applied to any project that wants to use a\nsimilar process.\n\n\nrepo and Gerrit are actually developed with themselves. You can\nuse repo to fetch repo:\n\n curl http://android.git.kernel.org/repo >~/bin/repo\n chomd a+x ~/bin/repo\n\n mkdir myrepo\n cd myrepo\n\n repo init -u git://android.git.kernel.org/tools/manifest.git\n repo sync\n\n\nThe \"git status\" output I was talking about before is the \"repo\nstatus\" subcommand, e.g.:\n\n $ echo '# test' >>repo/repo ; # modify a tracked file\n $ repo status\n project repo/ (*** NO BRANCH ***)\n -m repo\n\n-- \nShawn.\n"},{"id":"93709","messageId":"7vzlkwtpbq.fsf@gitster.siamese.dyndns.org","threadId":"16012","inReplyTo":"20081022154245.GT14786@spearce.org","subject":"Re: [ANNOUCNE] repo - The Multiple Git Repository Tool","fromName":"Junio C Hamano","fromEmail":"gitster@pobox.com","sentAt":"2008-10-22T19:14:17Z","receivedAt":"2008-10-22T19:14:17Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"gitster@pobox.com","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/54884?v=4"},"body":"\"Shawn O. Yes, it is actually my list, but I never use\nit so I often forget I put things onto it.
