(well, it grinds to a halt, so that\nI have to pull the power cord, followed by the battery!) I have been\nunable to do that since v1.5.3!\n\nI spent many hours (not recently) trying to determine the reason for\nthe crash, but it seems to be essentially \"random gremlins\" :-)\nHowever, since I mostly use Linux, I've not been very motivated to\nfind a solution, particularly when git works fine (touch wood) when\nused for real work. (i.e. only \"make test\" crashes my machine).\nAlso, as Alex and Shawn have not reported problems, I have assumed\nit is something specific to my environment. Dunno.\n\nAnyhow, the \"sort-of\" in the subject line, relates to the fact that\nI am seeing some test failures. In particular, all tests in\nt0004-unwritable.sh and tests 21->24 in t3700-add.sh. All of these\ntests involve chmod/permissions ...\n\nI haven't spent too long trying to debug this, but looking at the\nfirst (actually second) test in t0004, I did an strace on git-write-tree.\nAfter wading through the output, it seems that cygwin allows mkdir()\nto succeed in the (un-writable) .git/object directory; eg. when\nwriting the tree object 47d832... it succeeds in making the 47 directory\n(which does have write permission) followed by the d832... file.\nSo I tried this by hand:\n\n $ mkdir obj\n $ chmod a-w obj\n $ echo file >obj/file\n bash: obj/file: Permission denied\n $ mkdir obj/dir\n $\n\nOK.\n\n[Junio, in the tarball, the test files t5304-prune.sh and\nt7610-mergetool.sh do not have the executable bit set]\n\nATB,\n\nRamsay Jones\n"},{"id":"82153","messageId":"20080703202637.GC3546@steel.home","threadId":"14279","inReplyTo":"486D0FFC.5090308@ramsay1.demon.co.uk","subject":"Re: \"make test\" works again (sort-of) on cygwin.","fromName":"Alex Riesen","fromEmail":"raa.lkml@gmail.com","sentAt":"2008-07-03T20:26:37Z","receivedAt":"2008-07-03T20:26:37Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"raa.lkml@gmail.com","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/324101?v=4"},"body":"Ramsay Jones, Thu, Jul 03, 2008 19:44:28 +0200:\n> I spent many hours (not recently) trying to determine the reason for\n> the crash, but it seems to be essentially \"random gremlins\" :-)\n> However, since I mostly use Linux, I've not been very motivated to\n> find a solution, particularly when git works fine (touch wood) when\n> used for real work.
