The downtime is scheduled to\nstart on or around April 2nd, 2008 on or around 0001 UTC.\n\nAfter much deliberation, research and argument in #korg (along with\nscreaming matches between HPA and I over dinner) we are upgrading the\nkernel.org machines from Fedora Core 5 to FreeBSD 7.0.  This decision\ndoes not come lightly to the Kernel.org admins, and we would like to\npoint out several key things that helped us form our decision:\n\nFreeBSD 7.0 Bests Linux in SMP Performance:\n\thttp://bsd.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/03/06/1313218\n\thttp://people.freebsd.org/~kris/scaling/7.0%20Preview.pdf\n\nFreeBSD vs. Linux vs. Windows 2000\n\thttp://www.freebsd.org/maketing/os-comparison.html\n\nWe feel that we can better serve our mirrors, our users and the\ncommunity by making the switch, and we hope to have the transition done\nvery shortly.\n\n- - John 'Warthog9' Hawley\nKernel.org Admin\n\n\n\n-----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE-----\nVersion: GnuPG v1.4.7 (GNU/Linux)\nComment: Using GnuPG with Fedora - http://enigmail.mozdev.org\n\niD8DBQFH8YrN/E3kyWU9dicRAoPNAJ4hC3cjKwhQOI6bI2jlM78tWwcbcQCggl2g\n4WelwElXUhqSHZYNRze+yVw=\n=2SO7\n-----END PGP SIGNATURE-----\n"}]}
