I run it on Solaris 9 and on Solaris 10, SPARC editions anyway.\nI haven't personally tested it on the x86 Solaris version yet but\nI don't expect any major differences from the SPARC edition.\n \n>  Right now, it appears that gnu make and bash are both required to  \n> make git, and perhaps a bunch\n>  of other gnu utilities.\n\nAt least GNU make is required to compile Git.  This is available\npretty readily, and also builds fairly easy out of the box as\nsource code if (for some reason) you cannot install a version from\nsunfreeware.com.  Some little voice in the back of my head thinks it\nmay also be available out of the box on Solaris 10 but I'm not sure.\n\n> * Once made, do the git scripts require gnu utilities to work  \n> properly?  I'm a bit leery of putting the\n>     GNU utilities ahead of the solaris ones in my path (and everyone  \n> elses).\n\nEither the GNU utilties or /usr/xpg4/bin needs to be early in your\nPATH so that Git can pick up tools from there.  I think I'm actually\nbuilding Git with a config.mak along the lines of:\n\n\t$ cat - >config.mak\n\tSHELL=/usr/xpg4/bin/sh\n\tSHELL_PATH=$(SHELL)\n\t^D\n\nand then ensuring users have /usr/xpg4/bin very early in their PATH\nenvironment variable.\n\nIt does manage to build with both gcc and the Solaris workshop\ncompilers, so about the only GNU program really necessary to get\ngit built is GNU make.  Of course I'm only talking about the really\ncore functionality; tools like git-p4, git-svn, gitk, git-gui will\nrequire support beyond that (Python, Perl SVN bindings, Tcl/Tk...).\n\n-- \nShawn.\n"},{"id":"69419","messageId":"loom.20080220T224704-454@post.gmane.org","threadId":"12222","inReplyTo":"200802202158.m1KLw2wM014330@rs40.luxsci.com","subject":"Re: git on Solaris?","fromName":"Glenn Rempe","fromEmail":"glenn@rempe.us","sentAt":"2008-02-20T22:59:20Z","receivedAt":"2008-02-20T22:59:20Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"glenn@rempe.us","avatar":"https://gravatar.com/avatar/5febe06f1feb5a86bed5aee7b660b18f010bb0b00c48e91af84c2e179e344c50?d=mp&s=160"},"body":"\nDaniel Quinlan <danq <at> brtt.com> writes:\n\n> \n> I'm investigating moving to git for our development, but I'm having  \n> difficulty getting a functional\n> version on Solaris. \n\n\nI am using Git on OpenSolaris (a Joyent accelerator).  I found the process\nof compiling Git on Solaris impossible to figure out myself as well.  \nThe solution I found lay in installing Git from a package that \nJoyent provides which has been working well for me deploying \nRails apps to Joyent using Capistrano and Git.\n\nI did the following:\n\nOn my accelerator I downloaded this entire package dir to \nmy local home dir:\n\nhttp://pkgsrc.joyent.com/2007Q3/All/\n\nI copied the whole thing recursively with this command:\n\nwget -q -r -nc http://pkgsrc.joyent.com/2007Q3/All/\n\nThen:\n\nsudo /opt/local/sbin/pkg_add \\\n~/pkgsrc.joyent.com/2007Q3/All/scmgit-1.5.3.2.tgz\n\nYou might be able to deduce what was done to get it working by \ndigging into the scmgit package file.\n\nHere is a wiki page with instructions for compiling Git on solaris, but I could \nnot get them to work reliably (I could compile but tests would not pass).\n\nhttp://discuss.joyent.com/viewtopic.php?pid=145354\n\nI too would love to find a way to do a simple compile and install \nsimilar to what I do on OS X.\n\nGlenn\n"}]}
