I also want to try and \nexplain myself a little. I realize I was wrong in my original post, \nwhich was motivated out of offense at having my OS of choice insulted \nfor a design decision. My original goal was to try and get people to \nunderstand that both approaches (HFS+ vs basically every other \nfilesystem) are valid, and they accomplish different goals. \nUnfortunately, my argument seems to have been completely lost in the \nnoise, and everybody ended up with some idea of what my argument was \nthat was completely invalid. Given the prevalence of this mistaken \nidea, I am forced to admit I must have been at fault in describing my \nviewpoint, but the fact still stands that most of what everybody was \narguing against was not, in fact, my viewpoint.\n\nI am a stubborn man, as I believe most of you are. When someone argues \nagainst a mistakenly-attributed viewpoint, I feel compelled to correct \ntheir belief as to what my viewpoint really is. I realize this is \npretty much hopeless, and I only served to clutter the list. However, \nthe same can be said about most of the replies to me.\n\nEventually I realized my mistake, and attempted to steer the thread \ntowards discussion on potential solutions. Unfortunately, nobody \nseemed to want to follow me. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, people \nhad already invested too much into telling me why I was wrong. But I \ndo think it was a missed opportunity to get some real work done. And \nno, I was not, nor was I ever, asking people to write code for me. I \nwas asking for a discussion on potential solutions, since you all know \nfar more than I do about how git works, and thus you are much better \nsuited towards evaluating potential solutions than I am. I'm sorry if \nI did not make my desires clear enough.\n\nDespite what you may think, I did learn things in that thread. I \nsincerely hope this situation won't preclude my involvement in the git \nproject and community in the future. I've only been using git a short \ntime but I've learned a lot in that time, and I'd like to help the \nproject to succeed.\n\nSo once again, I am very sorry for what I have caused here.\n\n-Kevin Ballard\n\n-- \nKevin Ballard\nhttp://kevin.sb.org\nkevin@sb.org\nhttp://www.tildesoft.com\n\n\n"},{"id":"66286","messageId":"8563xm47ix.fsf@lola.goethe.zz","threadId":"11698","inReplyTo":"00C73A5A-D81D-41F5-A57D-BD84A1065C1B@sb.org","subject":"Re: Apologies for the massive and pointless thread","fromName":"David Kastrup","fromEmail":"dak@gnu.org","sentAt":"2008-01-22T07:57:26Z","receivedAt":"2008-01-22T07:57:26Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"dak@gnu.org","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/52141349?v=4"},"body":"Kevin Ballard <kevin@sb.org> writes:\n\n> I want to apologize for the recent thread entitled \"git on MacOSX and\n> files with decomposed utf-8 file names\".\n\n[...]\n\n> Unfortunately, my argument seems to have been completely lost in the\n> noise, and everybody ended up with some idea of what my argument was\n> that was completely invalid.\n\nYou still consider everybody who does not share your point of view an\nidiot. And telling people that is not going to change their mind. You\nneed to come up with an argument that convinces anybody, and \"the\ndesigners are smart people, they must have thought something smart even\nthough I don't actually get it myself\" does not convince anybody.
