The error messages at the\nclient side when update-server-info needs to be run are not useful.\n\nThis sequence does work:\ngit clone git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git\ndigispeaker\ncd digispeaker\ngit config remote.origin.url\nhttp://git.digispeaker.com/projects/digispeaker-kernel.git\ngit pull\n\nShould we allow this instead:\n git remote add origin\nhttp://git.digispeaker.com/projects/digispeaker-kernel.git\nand print a message saying the origin was changed? That step is necessary so that my changes\ndon't end up in the giant pack along with the base kernel.\n\nIt is also a requirement to compile the git tools with NO_MMAP if\nthere are going to work in a shared hosting environment like\ndreamhost. NO_MMAP is the key, changing git config doesn't help.\n\nAfter my initial clone from kernel.org it only takes a minute now to\npull my in changes.\n\n\n>\n> In contrast, when you open up .git/config in your editor, it's all almost\n> totally *obvious*.\n>\n> So telling people to edit the config file is usually much more helpful in\n> the long run.\n>\n> Linus\n>\n\n\n-- \nJon Smirl\njonsmirl@gmail.com\n"},{"id":"59572","messageId":"9e4733910711121254j5af5dba6k5acdce939936af66@mail.gmail.com","threadId":"10828","inReplyTo":"Pine.LNX.4.64.0711122040350.4362@racer.site","subject":"Re: Cloning from kernel.org, then switching to another repo","fromName":"Jon Smirl","fromEmail":"jonsmirl@gmail.com","sentAt":"2007-11-12T20:54:59Z","receivedAt":"2007-11-12T20:54:59Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"jonsmirl@gmail.com","avatar":"https://gravatar.com/avatar/cff3bf5bfdfa6708b905712ff91f0f9b8aaca161659f38c02b787920d5d28b7e?d=mp&s=160"},"body":"On 11/12/07, Johannes Schindelin <Johannes.Schindelin@gmx.de> wrote:\n> Hi,\n>\n> On Mon, 12 Nov 2007, Linus Torvalds wrote:\n>\n> > On Mon, 12 Nov 2007, Johannes Schindelin wrote:\n> > >\n> > > On Mon, 12 Nov 2007, Jon Smirl wrote:\n> > >\n> > > > I'd like to do this sequence, but I can't figure out how without\n> > > > editing the config file. The goal is to not put your changes and the upstream\ncommits in the same pack. You could also push _just_ the upstream\ncommits first, then in a different push, send your local changes. But\nwhen they get pushed together, they all end up in the same pack.\n\n-Peff\n"},{"id":"59611","messageId":"20071113042017.GB9745@sigill.intra.peff.net","threadId":"10828","inReplyTo":"9e4733910711120921q651208cby1276426ccd4b5fa4@mail.gmail.com","subject":"Re: Cloning from kernel.org, then switching to another repo","fromName":"Jeff King","fromEmail":"peff@peff.net","sentAt":"2007-11-13T04:20:17Z","receivedAt":"2007-11-13T04:20:17Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"peff@peff.net","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/45925?v=4"},"body":"On Mon, Nov 12, 2007 at 12:21:20PM -0500, Jon Smirl wrote:\n\n> Running git update-server-info at the remote end fixed it.\n> \n> I am using 'git push' to send changes, I though that was supposed to\n> update the server info automatically.\n\nIt is typically triggered by the post-update hook.
